To make a well-fitting dado or groove, measure the actual mating board, cut a test in scrap, then adjust your router guide or table-saw dado set until the stock seats snugly. A dado crosses the grain; a groove follows it. A guided router is flexible for a few cuts and large workpieces, while a compatible table saw with a stacked dado set can speed up repeated cuts.

What is the difference between a dado and a groove?

A dado is a square-sided, flat-bottomed recess cut across a board’s grain. It can house a shelf, cabinet floor, or drawer runner. A groove is cut with the grain and commonly holds a drawer bottom, door panel, or cabinet back. A cut that runs to the workpiece edges is a through dado or groove; one that ends before an edge is stopped. A rabbet is different: it is a notch cut along the edge of a board. Woodcraft’s joinery guide and the University of Melbourne’s workshop guide use this grain-orientation distinction.

Choose a cutting method

Base the choice on the workpiece size and support, the number of cuts, whether the cut is stopped or through, and which cutters and accessories your machine supports.

Method Best suited to Key considerations
Handheld router A few cuts, large panels, or workpieces easier to hold still than to maneuver across a machine table. Use a straightedge, T-square jig, or edge guide. Wider cuts require multiple guided passes.
Router table Small parts and repeatable operations. Use suitable stops for stopped grooves; deep cuts need multiple passes.
Table saw with stacked dado set Repeated cuts when the saw supports the set and the work can be guided safely. Check saw and cutter compatibility, use the specified insert, and tune the width with a test cut and shims.
Table saw with standard blade A few narrow dadoes when a dado set is not being used. Cut the two boundaries, then remove the waste with successive passes; this takes more setup and cleanup.

Measure the stock and plan the fit

Measure the actual thickness of the piece that will fit into the joint. Nominal sheet-good thickness is not a dependable target for a close fit. Use calipers or another suitable measuring tool, then cut a test in scrap from the same material.

  1. Measure the mating stock at several points and note the thickness you need the cut to receive.
  2. Make a test cut in scrap using the same setup intended for the project.
  3. Measure the test cut and compare it with the mating stock.
  4. Adjust the router guide or table-saw cutter and shims, then make another test if needed.
  5. Proceed on the project piece only when the mating stock seats snugly under ordinary hand pressure.

A loose fit can undermine the joint; a cut that is too tight may scrape glue from the side walls and trap it at the bottom. In its router-edge-guide demonstration, WoodWorkers Guild of America measures a first cut and the workpiece, then calculates a guide adjustment. The dimensions shown in the demonstration are examples, not standard sizes.

Cut a dado or groove with a handheld router

Fit a straight bit appropriate for the intended cut and your router. Clamp the workpiece securely, then clamp a straightedge or jig so the router’s base stays on a consistent path. An edge guide is another option, particularly when fitting the cut to measured sheet stock. Keep the router referenced to the guide throughout the cut.

  • stacked dado blades set cuts smooth and precise grooves with clean edges, square shoulders and flat bottoms
  • Set includes two 8 inch outer blades, five two-wing chippers and seven metal shims for fine adjustments with storage case.
  • Create 20 different widths of dados anywhere from slot widths range from 1/4" to 13/16", in 1/16" increments
  • Features a 5/8-inch arbor for compatibility with the majority of 10-inch table saws on the market
  • Carbide tooth blades and chippers feature negative hook angles to make flat bottom grooves that are smooth and virtually splinter-free
  1. Mark the cut location and set the guide from a reliable reference edge.
  2. Make a shallow test cut in scrap and measure its width.
  3. Adjust the guide to bring the cut to the measured width of the mating stock.
  4. For a cut wider than the bit, shift the guide in controlled increments and make additional guided passes.
  5. For a deep groove, remove material in more than one pass rather than trying to reach full depth at once.

A stopped groove can be routed with suitable stops that define its start and end. A stopped dado may require the mating component to be notched to fit the recess.

Use a router table for repeatable or stopped cuts

A router table can help with small parts and repeated operations. For a through dado wider than the fence can guide, Woodcraft describes using a miter gauge with an auxiliary fence and clamping the work for stability. Follow the instructions for your router, table, bit, and jig.

For a stopped groove, Woodcraft’s described method uses stop blocks: lower the workpiece onto the spinning bit at the start, feed it to the other stop, switch off the router, and wait for the bit to stop before lifting the workpiece. Deep grooves should be cut in two or more passes. Do not attempt this setup without suitable stops, stable workholding, and familiarity with the machine’s operating instructions.

Cut a dado on a table saw

A stacked dado set uses outside blades and intermediate chippers; shims can tune the cut width. Before setup, confirm in the manuals that the specific saw accepts the set and has adequate arbor capacity. Install the manufacturer-specified dado insert and configuration.

The Mibro Group 416381 Carbide Stacking Dado Blade Set - 14 Pieces, Silver, 8"
  • Cuts smooth and precise grooves with clean edges, square shoulders and flat bottoms
  • Set includes two 8" outer blades, five two-wing chippers and seven metal shims for fine adjustments
  • Slot widths range from 1/4" to 13/16", in 1/16" increments
  • Carbide tooth blades and chippers feature negative hook angles to make flat bottom grooves that are smooth and virtually splinter-free
  • Durable case has internal dividers to keep all of the components safe and secure
  1. Measure the actual mating stock and set up the dado cutter for an initial test.
  2. Cut scrap using the intended workholding and feed method.
  3. Measure the cut and mating stock with calipers.
  4. Adjust the cutter or shims to achieve a snug fit, then test again before cutting project parts.
  5. Support the work appropriately and use a suitable sled, fence, push stick, or push block as directed by the machine instructions and the operation.

Canadian Woodworking’s table-saw guide cautions against relying on a rip fence for pieces without enough bearing surface and recommends a crosscut sled for narrower panels. If making a few narrow dadoes with a standard blade, cut both boundary lines first, then remove the waste with successive passes. A stopped table-saw dado can leave a ramp or uneven end that needs cleanup; chiseling it or notching the mating shelf are alternatives with different finish and fit consequences.

Choose a cut depth for the project

The Home Depot’s wood-joints guide, last updated September 7, 2023, recommends a dado or groove depth of at least one-third of the board’s thickness and no more than half. Treat that as a rule of thumb from that guide, not a universal structural standard: the appropriate depth depends on the stock and joint design.

Set up and work safely

Router and table-saw operations can cause kickback, chipping, blade heating, or hand injury. Use the instructions for the exact machine, cutter, and accessories; keep the work stable and supported; and keep hands away from the cutter. Check compatibility and install the required insert before using a dado set. The Woodworking Education Center safety plan identifies dado operations as potentially advanced work and calls for supervisor guidance for certain operations. Follow local shop rules and get suitable instruction where required; a general guide cannot replace machine-specific training or manuals.
