Identify it by its narrow glossy leaves, aromatic crushed foliage and resin glands beneath the leaves, then choose a site with room for its mature spread.
How to identify Southern Waxmyrtle
Look for a multi-stem shrub or small tree with alternate, simple, narrow leaves. The leaves are glossy and aromatic, with teeth mainly near the tip and small yellow resin glands on the underside. Crushing a leaf—especially fresh growth—releases a bayberry-candle fragrance. These details are more useful than height alone, which varies with growing conditions and pruning. NC State Extension’s plant profile describes these identifying features.
The small flowers are inconspicuous catkins. On female plants, pollinated flowers develop into sessile clusters of small, rounded gray fruits coated in aromatic wax. Fruit appears on previous season’s growth.
Names and a similar look-alike
References use both Morella cerifera and Myrica cerifera. The USDA Forest Service FEIS review uses Morella cerifera and lists Myrica cerifera as a synonym; Virginia Tech and NC State use Myrica cerifera.

Northern Bayberry (Myrica pensylvanica) can also have aromatic leaves with resin glands. NC State describes it as generally shorter, more cold-hardy and deciduous, although it may be semi-evergreen in warmer southern winters. Compare overall leaf form, growth habit and regional range rather than relying on aroma or glands alone. The cited sources do not provide a complete field key for every similar species.
Where it grows and how large it gets
The USDA Forest Service reports that wax myrtle is most common in peninsular Florida and the southeastern Coastal Plain. Its core range extends from the Florida Keys north to southern New Jersey and west to eastern Texas, southeast Oklahoma and central Arkansas, with additional records outside that area.
Expect an upright, multi-stem shrub or small tree; pruning can shape it into a tree form. Published landscape dimensions vary: Virginia Tech gives a typical size of about 15 feet tall and wide, while NC State says it can reach 20–25 feet tall and 8–10 feet wide but is often smaller. Use these as source-specific guidance, not a promise of the size any one plant will reach. Virginia Cooperative Extension and NC State Extension provide their respective size and growing guidance.

How to grow it successfully
Choose a site for local conditions
Southern Waxmyrtle tolerates a broad range of light, soil and moisture conditions. Virginia Tech lists partial shade to full sun and sandy, loamy or clay soils with acidic pH. NC State reports full sun to partial shade, including dry shade, and broad moisture tolerance once established. The shrub also tolerates wet conditions, drought after establishment, salt spray and poor or sterile soils.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Keep newly planted specimens consistently moist while they establish. For hardiness, the sources differ: Virginia Tech lists USDA Zones 7 (6b) to 11, while NC State lists Zones 7–10 and notes that the plant may be semi-evergreen toward the northern part of its range. Check local climate conditions and nursery advice rather than treating either range as a guarantee for a specific site.
Allow for spread and choose the intended form
Use Southern Waxmyrtle as a screen, informal hedge, border, mass planting or small tree with lower limbs removed. Its fast growth and tendency to sucker help it form dense cover, but shoots can spread beyond the original planting area. Leave room for the expected mature size and monitor shoots where spread needs to be controlled.

Before choosing Southern Waxmyrtle, weigh the site’s sun and moisture, local hardiness, desired form, tolerance for sucker management, interest in berries and wildlife, and any fire-safety concerns. No cultivar is established as a universal choice in the cited sources; Virginia Tech recommends seeking regional guidance from garden centers, public gardens or arboreta.
Pruning, suckers and fire-safety considerations
Pruning can maintain a chosen height or encourage a tree-like form, but it can reduce the next fruit display: fruit forms on old growth, so removing older growth may remove sites where fruit would develop. The cited ornamental sources do not establish a universal pruning month or detailed cut-by-cut method.
Pasture control is a different task from landscape pruning. UF/IFAS says chopping provides temporary control in pastures and regrowth can occur; that guidance is not a home-landscape pruning prescription. See UF/IFAS’s pasture biology and control publication for its specific context.

In areas where defensible space is a concern, NC State flags the aromatic foliage and woody material as a potential fire hazard and advises against planting Southern Waxmyrtle within a home’s defensible space. Follow local fire-safety guidance when assessing a site.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Flowers, berries and wildlife value
Male and female flowers are usually on separate plants, so dependable fruit production generally calls for both sexes. Virginia Tech advises planting both for berries. NC State says both are usually needed but notes occasional plants with both flower types or bisexual flowers. An unidentified single plant is not a reliable promise of fruit.
Female plants produce wax-coated gray fruit, usually on older growth; fruit can persist into the cooler season. NC State and UF/IFAS describe the fruit as valuable to birds and wildlife, and NC State identifies Southern Waxmyrtle as a host for hairstreak butterflies. The UF/IFAS tree factsheet also covers its landscape and wildlife value.

Common health concerns
Virginia Tech and NC State describe serious pest and disease problems as uncommon. NC State notes that temporary leaf drop can follow acclimatization or extreme cold, and winter leaf browning may occur; leaf anthracnose or mosaic are also possible.
UF/IFAS reports lethal Fusarium wilt affecting waxmyrtle in central and south Florida. That is a geographically specific report, not evidence that the disease is common throughout the plant’s range. A diagnosis for a particular shrub requires its symptoms and local context.
