Check the care label on your specific weighted blanket before cleaning it. If machine washing is allowed, use a washer large enough for the blanket, follow the label’s water-temperature and cycle limits, and choose mild detergent. Air drying is the cautious default; tumble-dry only when the blanket’s instructions explicitly permit it.
Can you wash a weighted blanket?
Sometimes. The permitted method depends on the blanket’s fabric, padding, fill and construction, so its care label and current manufacturer instructions take precedence over general advice. A blanket containing beads is not automatically machine washable; do not infer washability from the fill alone. Maytag advises checking the label for cleaning instructions and filling details: Maytag’s weighted-blanket care guide.
If the blanket has a removable cover, take it off and follow the cover’s own care label. Cleaning the cover separately can help limit how often the weighted body itself needs washing.
What to check before washing
- Allowed method: Confirm whether the blanket can be machine washed, hand washed, spot cleaned or requires professional care.
- Wash settings: Check the permitted water temperature, cycle, spin speed and detergent. Do not assume cold water or a gentle cycle is allowed unless it fits the product instructions.
- Fill and fabric: Use product documentation to identify the materials when stated. Guidance distinguishes glass, steel or plastic beads from natural fills such as sand, rice or beans; the material alone does not establish that washing is safe. Fabric and padding matter too.
- Appliance capacity: Check the washer and dryer manuals. A wet blanket adds load, so dry weight alone does not tell you whether a home machine can handle it. If the label permits machine washing but the blanket is too large for your equipment, consider suitable commercial equipment or a laundry service.
How to machine wash a weighted blanket
Use this process only when the blanket’s label allows machine washing. Follow its specific settings if they differ from these general precautions.

- Remove the cover. Wash it separately according to its own label.
- Pre-treat visible stains. Use a stain product only if it is compatible with the blanket’s care instructions.
- Load the blanket carefully. Wash it by itself or as the manufacturer directs, and distribute it evenly in the drum.
- Select the approved settings. Use a gentle cycle, cold water and mild detergent only when consistent with the label. Avoid bleach and fabric softener where the product instructions permit washing.
- Follow the label for spin and removal. Do not assume a particular spin speed is safe; the product’s instructions govern.
Care instructions can be highly specific. For example, Sensory Direct’s April 2025 version 1 guidance for specified polyester/polycotton blankets filled with HDPE beads says to machine wash at 30°C on a gentle wash with low spin, avoid fabric softener and bleach, air dry flat, and not tumble dry or iron. Those instructions apply to the products they cover, not to every weighted blanket: Sensory Direct weighted-blanket instructions.
If the blanket is not machine washable
Use only the alternative method permitted by the label. That may be spot cleaning, hand washing or professional care. Do not submerge or dry-clean a blanket unless its manufacturer says that method is suitable; generic advice cannot establish that an unusual fill or construction will tolerate it.

How to dry a weighted blanket
Air drying is the cautious choice in the cited appliance guidance. Whirlpool strongly recommends air drying but notes that a dryer may be used for some blankets only after checking their care instructions: Whirlpool’s weighted-blanket care guide.
- Lay the blanket flat if its instructions call for flat drying, and allow it to dry fully before use.
- Use a dryer only if the blanket’s label permits it, and stay within its specified heat limit.
- Follow any product-specific after-wash instructions. For example, CURA advises stretching its weighted blankets and duvets after washing: CURA care instructions.
How often should you wash one?
There is no single evidence-based washing schedule established for every weighted blanket. Let the amount of use, visible soil and the product’s care instructions guide how often you clean it. A removable cover can be washed separately, according to its label.
