For a sunny, well-drained path with occasional foot traffic, creeping thyme is a strong low-growing choice. For a moist, shady border, consider mondo grass. Sedums can suit sunny paths too, but the right species matters: “sedum” covers plants with different heights and growth habits. No single groundcover fits every path, and none of the available guidance supports a promise that plants will fill in within a set number of weeks.
Choose a plant for the path’s conditions
Before choosing a border plant, check how much sun the path receives, whether the soil drains or stays moist, and whether people will step on the planting area or merely walk beside it. These factors matter more than a general claim that a plant is low-maintenance. Local climate and hardiness also affect whether a plant is suitable.
- Sunny and well-drained: creeping thyme is a candidate for gaps between pavers or a sunny path edge.
- Shady and moist: mondo grass is a candidate for filtered sun to full shade.
- Sunny, with the exact plant selected for the site: consider a suitable low-growing sedum rather than assuming every sedum has the same size or form.
For region-specific suitability, check with a local cooperative extension service or nursery familiar with your conditions.

Creeping thyme for sunny paver gaps
Creeping thyme is a low-growing option for sunny paths and stepping stones. Illinois Extension recommends well-drained soil and full sun to very light shade, and gives a planting spacing of 8–12 inches. North Carolina State Extension describes Thymus praecox as a dense mat about 3–6 inches tall that tolerates moderate foot traffic. University of Delaware Cooperative Extension describes Thymus serpyllum as 3–6 inches tall, fragrant, and useful around walks in full sun.

Those descriptions cover different species, so check the botanical name and cultivar on the plant you buy. The spacing guidance is a planting recommendation, not a guarantee of how quickly a particular path will fill in.
Mondo grass for a moist, shaded path edge
Mondo grass (Ophiopogon japonicus) is a groundcover option for a border along a path or between stepping stones. Clemson Cooperative Extension describes it as suitable for filtered sun to full shade and as preferring moist soil. It needs little attention once established, though ragged old foliage can be sheared in early spring. Mondo grass is not liriope; do not treat those common names as interchangeable when selecting plants.

Sedum for a sunny site
“Sedum” or “stonecrop” refers to a range of species, not one uniform groundcover. University of Delaware Cooperative Extension notes that heights vary widely among sedums and that most are mat-forming groundcovers; Colorado State University Extension includes several low-growing groundcover sedums. Choose a species or cultivar whose mature size and site requirements suit the path rather than relying on the broad label alone.
What low-maintenance means beside a path
Low-maintenance does not mean no upkeep. Mondo grass may need an early-spring cleanup if its older leaves look ragged. Colorado State University Extension notes that flowering and fruiting groundcovers often take more maintenance to keep attractive. If a neat edge is important, account for seasonal trimming and the looser appearance some flowering groundcovers can develop.

The cited guidance describes creeping thyme as tolerating moderate foot traffic; that does not establish that every groundcover will withstand regular walking, or that a border plant is appropriate for a heavily used route.

The available extension guidance does not provide a comparative establishment-time trial for these path plants. Growth depends on the plant selected and the conditions where it is planted, so do not count on a transformation in a fixed number of weeks.
