Clarence House stands beside St James’s Palace in London. As reported by the Associated Press on June 25, 2026, King Charles III and Queen Camilla will remain at Clarence House following Buckingham Palace’s refurbishment. The announcement distinguishes the royal couple’s residence from Buckingham Palace’s continuing ceremonial and operational role.
Why does the headline call it a $72 million home?
The $72 million figure should not be treated as an established value for Clarence House. How has Clarence House changed over time?
From a duke’s townhouse to a royal family home
After its first occupant, the house became home to Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip after their 1947 marriage. Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother lived there from 1953 until 2002. Its rooms and furnishings reflect these successive periods of use rather than a single, unchanged design.
Adapted for Charles’s household
The Royal Family says Clarence House was refurbished and redecorated for Charles when he was Prince of Wales. The work included adjusted colour schemes, new textiles, and additions from both the Royal Collection and his own art collection. The stated aim was to suit the new household while preserving the atmosphere of a family home.

What is inside Clarence House?
The house’s rooms tell part of its history through how they were used:
- Lancaster Room: Originally the Duke of Clarence’s Equerry’s Room, it later served as a waiting room for visitors.
- Morning Room: First used as a breakfast room. Around 1841, the Duchess of Kent added its large window facing the garden.
- Library: Used by the Queen Mother for intimate dinners.
- Garden Room: Created by combining two rooms that Princess Margaret used before her marriage.
Many objects on display come from the Queen Mother’s collection and remain arranged according to her layout. The Royal Collection Trust also highlights Chinese porcelain, a Tompion clock made for William III at Kensington Palace, and works by Landseer and Bogdani. A formal garden area was added in 2004–05 in the Queen Mother’s memory, with planting laid out by members of The Prince’s School of Traditional Arts.

How does Clarence House differ from Buckingham Palace?
They are not simply competing royal homes. In the arrangement reported by the Associated Press in June 2026, Clarence House is the King and Queen’s residence; Buckingham Palace remains the monarchy’s ceremonial and operational center and a workplace for them. This separation of domestic and institutional roles helps explain why the royal couple can remain at Clarence House while Buckingham Palace continues to serve as “Monarchy HQ,” as senior royal official James Chalmers described it to the AP.
