Caterpillar is expanding automation into construction, but its current announcements do not show a general rollout of fully autonomous excavators, trucks and dozers. The company describes different stages: remote operation and semi-autonomous or autonomous-ready features for selected machines, future construction categories still being tested, and autonomous haul trucks already operating in quarry settings.
What Caterpillar has—and has not—rolled out
“Autonomous” can describe materially different capabilities. An operator may control a machine from a remote station; software may automate a specific task while a person supervises; or a fleet may operate autonomously. Caterpillar’s announcements cover several of these levels, but not the same machines or work environments. A demonstration or a machine category on a roadmap is not evidence that a fully autonomous product is generally available.
| Machine or capability | What Caterpillar has described | Evidence and setting |
|---|---|---|
| Wheel loaders | Expanded Cat Command coverage, from remote operation through semi-autonomous and autonomous-ready functions. | Described in Caterpillar’s March 2026 CONEXPO announcement; show demonstrations included remote operation of Cat 938 loaders located in Florida. This is not proof that every function is commercially available for every model or site. |
| Dozers | Remote through autonomous-ready functions; MineStar Command for dozing is also described for remote and semiautonomous operation. | Construction capabilities were described in March 2026. MineStar’s page covers mining offerings, so the contexts should not be treated as interchangeable. |
| Articulated truck | Remote operation, not evidence of fully autonomous operation. | A Cat 745 was available for attendees to operate remotely from a Command Station at CONEXPO in March 2026. |
| Compactor | Semi-autonomous compaction. | A Cat CS12 roller demonstration at CONEXPO in March 2026. |
| Excavators | Listed as a construction category to watch; no launched autonomous excavator is established by the cited materials. | Caterpillar’s current construction autonomy page says large-jobsite testing was about to get underway. |
| Haul trucks | Autonomous hauling is operating in quarry and mining contexts; construction-wide availability is not established. | Cat 777 deployments provide customer examples, while Caterpillar’s construction page lists haul trucks among future construction categories. |
What the March 2026 construction announcement means
At CONEXPO-CON/AGG in March 2026, Caterpillar described a portfolio spanning operator-assist and detection features, remote and semi-autonomous operation, and coordinated autonomous tasks. For wheel loaders and dozers, the company said expanded Cat Command capabilities ranged from remote operation to autonomous-ready functions. It also highlighted auto-dig, auto-dump and automated grading as semi-autonomous functions.
The demonstrations illustrate the distinction between a capability and a broad product launch. Attendees could remotely operate two Cat 938 wheel loaders located in Florida; a Command Station let attendees remotely operate a Cat 745 articulated truck; and a Cat CS12 roller demonstrated semi-autonomous compaction. Remote operation still involves a human controlling the machine from elsewhere. The announcement does not establish that the demonstrated systems are fully autonomous or universally available.

Caterpillar’s March 2026 CONEXPO announcement describes the demonstrations and capability range.
Excavators and other construction categories remain on a roadmap
Caterpillar’s current construction autonomy page says the company is expanding into construction from technology proven in mining. It names loaders, dozers, haul trucks, excavators and soil compactors as categories for autonomous construction equipment, and says testing at large jobsites was about to get underway. That language signals a roadmap and testing phase; it does not give a dated commercial launch commitment for autonomous excavators or for every listed category.

Caterpillar Chief Technology Officer Jaime Mineart framed the effort as an opportunity, saying scaling the technology into construction would add “unprecedented levels of safety, efficiency and productivity.” That is the company’s outlook, not independently established performance evidence.
Where autonomous Cat haul trucks are already working
Luck Stone’s Bull Run quarry
Caterpillar reported in April 2025 that four Cat 777 trucks equipped with MineStar Command for hauling were operating at Luck Stone’s Bull Run plant in Virginia. The company said this fleet had moved more than 816,000 metric tonnes (900,000 tons) since November. That is a Caterpillar-reported figure for this specific quarry deployment, not an industry-wide performance result.

The same April 2025 article said the next-generation Cat 775 was planned for introduction in 2026, with its MineStar Command autonomous capability still under development and a release date to be announced later. That dated plan does not confirm the truck’s present availability or the status of its autonomous system.
Carmeuse’s Drummond Island quarry
In May 2026, Caterpillar announced that Carmeuse had selected MineStar Command for hauling for deployment across its fleet of Cat 777 trucks at the Drummond Island quarry in Michigan. The announcement establishes a selected deployment, not that commissioning is complete or the fleet is already operating autonomously.

These quarry examples are evidence of autonomous hauling in that operating context. They do not establish that Cat haul trucks are generally autonomous on construction jobsites.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to read the different autonomy labels
- Operator assistance: a system helps with a task or provides detection information while an operator remains in control.
- Remote operation: a person controls the machine from a separate location. Distance from the cab does not make the machine autonomous.
- Semi-autonomous: the system performs defined functions, such as a task sequence, while human supervision or intervention remains part of the operation.
- Autonomous-ready: a machine or capability is described as prepared for autonomous functions; the label alone does not establish that it is operating autonomously or available in every configuration.
- Fully autonomous operation: the machine or fleet carries out operations autonomously in its defined setting. Caterpillar’s quarry-hauling examples are distinct from the construction roadmap and trade-show demonstrations.
Caterpillar’s MineStar Command page describes mining offerings ranging from remote control of a single machine to autonomous haul-truck fleets, and describes Command for dozing as remote and semiautonomous. The product page’s mining use cases should not be read as proof of equivalent construction-jobsite availability.

What is established about performance
The cited announcements provide examples and company descriptions, not an independently published performance study. Caterpillar’s safety, efficiency and productivity statements should therefore be read as company claims or goals; the sources do not establish independently verified gains, a regulatory finding or independent technical validation.
For details on the quarry deployment and Cat 775 development plan, see Caterpillar’s April 22, 2025 article and its April 2025 Cat 775 release. For Carmeuse’s selection, see the May 4, 2026 announcement.
What construction buyers should verify
Availability depends on machine, function, operating context and timing. Before planning around a specific autonomous or remote capability, ask Caterpillar or a Cat dealer to confirm the supported model and configuration, where the system can be used, whether the function is a demonstration, in testing or commercially available, and the regional timing. Caterpillar’s announcements advise confirming availability and specifications directly.
