Should You Cut Back Irises, Daisies and Other Perennials in Fall?

Fall cleanup is selective: remove diseased growth and troublesome seedheads, but leave healthy stems when they protect crowns or support wildlife. Iris type matters.

No—don’t give every perennial a fall haircut. Remove diseased or pest-damaged growth, and consider cutting back plants that spread aggressively by seed. For healthy plants, decide by species: some benefit from cleanup, while others offer winter shelter, food or protection when their stems remain. Frost, soil conditions and local climate matter more than a single calendar date.

How to decide what to cut back

Ask “Should I cut back all my perennials this fall?” Iowa State University Extension and Outreach says perennials may be cut back after a hard freeze, but waiting until spring is often beneficial. The useful distinction is not simply fall versus spring; it is what the plant’s remaining growth is doing.

  • Remove diseased or pest-damaged growth. Infected leaves and stems left in the bed can carry problems through winter. Remove this material rather than putting it in an ordinary backyard compost pile; UNH Extension cautions that most home piles do not get hot enough to kill pathogens.
  • Consider cutting back aggressive self-seeders. Removing seedheads before seeds disperse can help limit unwanted spread.
  • Keep healthy stems when they serve a purpose. Seedheads and standing stems can provide winter structure, food and shelter for wildlife, or protection for plant crowns and new basal growth.
  • Account for your site and preference. Winter wetness, local climate, crown protection and whether you prefer a tidy fall bed or spring cleanup all affect the choice.

Iowa State’s FAQ, last updated September 10, 2026, and UNH Extension’s November 4, 2019 guidance offer regional examples, not a universal schedule for every climate or cultivar.

Irises need type-specific timing

“Cut iris back in fall” is too broad: Siberian, Dutch and bearded irises do not have identical guidance. The University of Maryland Extension’s iris advice distinguishes them as follows:

Iris type What to do Timing or cue
Siberian Remove the flower stalk after blooming; retain the leaves. Keep leaves until frost kills them.
Dutch Remove spent flower stems; let the leaves wither naturally. Follow the foliage’s natural dieback rather than cutting it green.
Bearded Remove foliage after freezing temperatures have killed it. Early winter is the timing described by Maryland Extension; its answer cites fungal spores and iris borer eggs as reasons for cleanup.

These are type-specific cues, not a date to apply to every iris in every region. Maryland Extension’s response was dated May 28–29, 2026.

Shasta daisies: balance cleanup with winter protection

UNH Extension includes Shasta daisy among plants that may be cut back in fall. An Ohio Ask Extension response, however, recommends leaving some stalks in place to protect new basal growth from winter snow. These recommendations value different things: tidiness and cleanup versus protection. Leave some healthy stalks if that cover is useful, and remove diseased growth rather than keeping it for shelter.

Examples: plants to cut and plants to leave

UNH Extension lists the following as reasonable fall-cutback examples in its regional guidance. That list is a starting point, not a rule that overrides disease status, winter protection or local conditions.

UNH also identifies plants that can be left standing for seed, winter interest or shelter:

  • Purple coneflower, black-eyed Susan, coreopsis, sunflower, prairie gay feather, switchgrass and little bluestem.

Other examples it notes for winter interest include miscanthus, feather reed grass, false indigo seedpods and sea holly. The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) captures the trade-off: “Many gardeners choose to leave dead herbaceous plants and grasses over winter to provide structure to the garden, as well as food and shelter for wildlife.”

How to cut back without damaging new growth

  1. Identify the plant and inspect it. Check whether it is diseased, pest-damaged, a troublesome self-seeder, or healthy and useful as winter cover. If you cannot identify it, seek region-specific guidance rather than cutting on a generic schedule.
  2. Choose an appropriate tool. RHS recommends a knife, shears or secateurs. Pruning shears are one option for suitable stems; buying a particular tool is not necessary.
  3. Cut for the plant’s growth habit. Cut near the crown or dormant base while avoiding young growth. Some plants can be cut to soil level; others need a lighter cut if fresh shoots are appearing at the base.
  4. Separate diseased material. Remove infected debris from the bed and keep it out of ordinary backyard compost. Use local green-waste collection or another locally appropriate disposal route.
  5. Leave sound stems where they help. Retain useful seedheads or cover, then clear remaining debris when conditions and local wildlife guidance make spring cleanup appropriate.

The RHS gives crocosmia and paeony as examples that can be cut to soil level, while asters and tall sedum with new basal shoots should be cut less severely. In waterlogged soil, it may be preferable to cut in autumn so you do not need to work in wet ground later. Iowa State also notes that plant debris can protect against frost heaving; follow local guidance on mulch timing rather than applying it too early.

When to clean up in spring

Leaving stems through winter does not mean leaving them indefinitely. Cut them back when they no longer provide useful cover or structure and doing so will not damage fresh growth. If insect habitat is a priority, the Ohio Ask Extension response recommends waiting until temperatures are consistently above 50°F before removing material, so insects have time to become active. That is regional advice, not a universal temperature threshold. It also notes that cut stems can be left beside the plant rather than composted.
