How to Warm Up a House That’s Always Cold

A cold house may be losing heat through drafts, windows or poor insulation—or the heating system may not be distributing warmth effectively. Start with targeted checks, preserve required ventilation and get a qualified assessment before major work.

If your house is always cold, start by finding where heat is escaping and whether the heating system is distributing enough warmth. Check for drafts, cold windows and uneven room temperatures; seal suitable gaps without blocking required ventilation. If the whole home stays cold or the cause is unclear, arrange a qualified assessment of the building envelope and heating system before investing in major work.

First work out whether the problem is one room or the whole house

Notice where and when the cold occurs. A single cold room points you toward local drafts, windows, airflow or heat delivery. If every room is cold, consider broader heat loss through the roof, walls or floors, significant air leakage, or a heating system that is not working effectively or suited to the home. This is a practical way to narrow the checks, not a diagnosis by itself.

  • Check whether doors, room controls or airflow patterns might be affecting how heat reaches the cold room.
  • Note whether the problem changes on windy days, at night or when the heating is running.
  • Look for visible gaps and feel for moving air around doors, windows, floorboards, skirting, vents and fireplaces.

Find and seal drafts without blocking ventilation

Air leaks can occur in obvious places such as doors and windows, but also around utility penetrations, chimneys, recessed lights and unfinished spaces. The U.S. Department of Energy recommends finding and sealing the largest leaks first in its Home Energy Checklist. Breezes, moving curtains, or whistling and rattling in windy weather can help identify trouble spots.

For a suitable gap, options include weather strips, foam strips, a door draft stopper or appropriate sealant. Choose a material that fits the gap rather than forcing an ill-fitting seal into place. Australian government guidance cites a CSIRO 2015 estimate that sealing gaps may reduce heat loss by 15% to 25%; that is a potential estimate, not a guaranteed result for an individual home. Do not seal vents indiscriminately. Unflued and open-flue gas heaters need adequate ventilation. Australian guidance notes that unflued gas heaters emit carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide and water vapor during combustion, and that restrictions vary by jurisdiction. Check the requirements for your appliance and location in the Australian Government’s heating and cooling guidance.

Reduce heat loss at cold windows

If windows feel cold or the room loses comfort near them, thick curtains or other suitable window coverings can help. Open curtains when useful winter sunlight is available, then close them at night, as the U.S. Department of Energy recommends in its Home Energy Checklist. Coverings can improve comfort, but they do not replace fixing a major leak or addressing inadequate insulation.

The space heater for indoor use makes a noticeable difference and works well in small to medium rooms when positioned properly.

Assess insulation before taking on major work

Heat can escape through the roof, walls and floor. Australian government guidance says appropriate insulation in these areas can potentially save over 50% on heating and cooling costs, depending on the home and climate; it is not a typical or guaranteed saving for every household. The same guidance reports that heating and cooling account for 20% to 50% of energy used in Australian homes, depending on climate zone. These figures apply to Australian homes, not homes everywhere. See Insulation and draught proofing and Heating and cooling.

The right insulation type and amount depend on local climate, construction and how the home is heated. Larger insulation jobs merit qualified advice and careful installation. Australian guidance also advises having an electrician check wiring before it is covered by insulation. Avoid treating insulation as a generic add-on: the assessment should identify where heat is being lost and what is appropriate for the particular building.

Use an energy assessment when the cause is unclear

If drafts are hard to locate, several rooms are cold, or the heating system and building shell may both be contributing, arrange a professional energy audit or qualified inspection. A blower-door test can help reveal air leakage. The U.S. Department of Energy describes whole-house weatherization as assessing the home’s shell and mechanical systems together, rather than treating one measure in isolation. Details and availability vary by location; see Whole-House Weatherization.

Check the heating system before replacing it

If the equipment is malfunctioning, aging or unable to meet the home’s needs, have it inspected by a qualified professional. A system upgrade may make sense in some homes, but should be considered alongside air sealing and insulation so the new equipment is sized and selected for the building and climate.

Heat pumps transfer heat rather than generate it in the same way as electric resistance heating. The U.S. Department of Energy says a heat pump can use up to 75% less electricity for heating than electric resistance heating; that comparison is not a guaranteed reduction in a particular home’s bill. Modern air-source heat pumps are an option in colder regions. If outdoor temperatures regularly fall below freezing, DOE advises considering the ENERGY STAR Cold Climate label. Read its Heat Pump Systems guidance.

Follow local comfort and electrical-safety guidance

Temperature advice depends on location and household circumstances. UK government guidance suggests trying to heat frequently used rooms to at least 18°C. Australian home guidance gives 18–20°C as a winter thermostat range. Treat these as jurisdiction-specific guidance, not universal requirements: UK cold-weather advice and YourHome heating and cooling.
