Neither is established here as a universal stain-removal winner: a washer’s stain setting describes an intended function, not proof that it outperforms competitors in independent tests.
Two washing machines to consider for tough laundry
These are evidence-backed candidates, not a complete ranking. Manufacturer information confirms the Maytag’s features; the LG has model-specific testing context, but its reported cleaning strength comes through a secondary summary of Consumer Reports rather than a complete public scorecard.

Maytag MTW7205RW: built-in soak and soil controls
Maytag says Extra Power combines an intense prewash with extra agitation. Deep Fill adds water to saturate loads and loosen stains. The built-in faucet can be used to rinse, spot-treat, or soak clothes in the washer; after three hours, the water drains and the clothes are ready for the wash cycle. Maytag also lists a Sanitize with Oxi cycle, but that bacterial-reduction claim is not evidence of stain-removal performance.
Consumer Reports says its top-load agitator washing test uses prestained swatches and the machine’s most aggressive normal cycle, without special cycles or option buttons. That makes the test different from measuring the Maytag’s optional stain-focused features. The accessible model page does not provide a public score that would establish a stain-removal ranking.

LG WT8405CW: tested cleaning, with a gentleness trade-off
Consumer Reports’ testing framework assesses washing performance alongside energy and water efficiency, gentleness, noise, vibration, and other measures. The QZ report’s summary of Consumer Reports gives the WT8405CW strong cleaning marks among the cited top-load agitators but cautions that it is rough on clothes. Treat that as a reason to weigh fabric wear carefully, not as a full public test scorecard. LG’s US product page lists Stain Care and multiple soil levels; those are features, not independent proof of superior cleaning.
How independent stain tests compare
Test results are useful only when you know what was washed, on which program, and where the test was conducted. These organizations use different protocols, so their results should not be combined into a single ranking.
Which?: UK cottons and synthetics tests
Which? says it tests more than 2,500 kg of laundry each year, using stains including blood, grease, ink, milk, oil, and rust. Its protocol runs a 40°C cottons program at 80% of stated capacity and a 30°C synthetics program at full capacity, keeping the swatches and rest of the load comparable. Cleaning is rated from one to five stars; Which? says three stars is not its preferred choice for heavy staining. These are UK test conditions, not a direct prediction of results in every US household.

Which? washing-machines expert Rebecca Jakeman explains why its main stain comparison does not use a dedicated stain setting: “If a machine offers a dedicated stain-removal setting, we won’t test this over the standard cottons program. We think a good washing machine should be able to tackle tough stains without the need for special programs. This also allows us to ensure our results remain as comparable as possible from one washer to the next.” Which? describes its testing method here.

CHOICE: Australian cold-wash test
CHOICE tests specially prepared stains in a normal cold-water cycle, then measures reflected light after washing. It says dirt-removal score differences of 6% or more are visible. This is an Australian protocol and should not be conflated with Which?’s UK tests or treated as a direct US household outcome. CHOICE explains its test method.
Consumer Reports: normal-cycle agitator test
Consumer Reports says its top-load agitator test washes prestained swatches in a representative mixed-cotton load using the most aggressive normal cycle. Special cycles and option buttons are excluded. That standard-cycle result can help compare machines under a consistent test, but it does not show what a maker’s optional stain program will do. The relevant model score pages are member-gated.

What to compare before you buy
Stain removal is only one part of choosing a washer. Match cleaning evidence and soil controls to the laundry you actually wash, then check fabric care, efficiency, cycle length, installation fit, and local purchasing conditions.
- Cleaning evidence: Prefer independent model testing with stained swatches and comparable loads. Check whether the test used a standard cycle or a special program.
- Soil controls: Look for useful options such as soak, prewash, selectable soil levels, or added agitation. These controls can help with particular loads, but manufacturer descriptions are not head-to-head test results.
- Fabric care: Stronger agitation is not right for every textile. Consider gentleness results where available and follow garment labels.
- Capacity and bulky loads: Choose a capacity that suits ordinary loads and your installation limits. A larger stated capacity does not itself mean better stain removal.
- Energy and water: Compare tested use rather than relying on a marketing label alone. CHOICE notes that label-selected programs can differ from programs consumers commonly use.
- Cycle time: Heavy-duty and soak options can add time. Check actual model cycle durations and whether they fit your routine.
- Installation: Verify width, depth, height, route and door clearance, hookups, and the exact regional model suffix before ordering.
- Price and service: Retail prices and stock change. Check the current delivered price, return terms, warranty, and service availability locally; no price ranking is established here.
Use soil features without damaging clothes
For sturdy work clothes, sportswear, pet laundry, or visibly soiled cottons, an appropriate heavy-duty or high-soil setting can be useful. Maytag describes Heavy Duty as intended for sturdy, extra-dirty loads, but the exact behavior varies by model; consult the owner’s manual. Do not default to maximum water, the hottest temperature, or the hardest agitation for every item.
For a persistent mark, pretreat it with a suitable method and use a soak only if the garment’s care instructions and washer manual allow it. GE says its presoak option adds 15 minutes to give pretreatment time to break down stains, and notes that presoak can help reduce wear and fading. Its feature description is guidance, not proof that one washer removes more stains than another.

Which? expert Rebecca Jakeman says tough cotton stains may need pretreatment. That is practical advice, not a promise that set-in stains will come out. Results vary with stain type and age, fabric, detergent, load size, and wash program.
Is there one best washer for every tough-stain load?
No universal winner is established by the available public evidence. Which? keeps its named 2026 recommendations behind membership, and Consumer Reports’ model scores are gated. The Maytag is a plausible choice for shoppers who want several documented soak and soil-control features; the LG is an independently tested candidate whose reported cleaning strength comes with a gentleness caution. Choose based on the loads you wash and the trade-offs you can accept, not on a feature name alone.
