Outdoor Adhesives: How to Choose the Right Bond or Sealant

Choose an outdoor adhesive by matching its purpose and substrate compatibility to the joint’s loads, movement and exposure to weather, UV and temperature.

The right outdoor adhesive depends on what you are joining, whether the joint must bond, seal or do both, and the weather and forces it will face. There is no universal outdoor adhesive: check the exact product’s compatibility and technical data before use.

Start with the job, not the adhesive label

Identify both surfaces and what the joint needs to do. A construction adhesive intended to bond materials is not automatically the right choice for a moving weather-exposed gap; a sealant that blocks water is not automatically suitable to carry a load.

  • Bonding: The joint must hold the materials together against the forces acting on them.
  • Sealing: The joint must close a gap against water or weather.
  • Bonding and sealing: Some products serve both purposes, but verify the specific product’s intended use and limits.

LOCTITE’s technical manual says a bond must withstand both the mechanical forces acting on it and the working conditions it encounters. It advises considering environmental and physical stresses together, since their combined effect can be more demanding than either alone: LOCTITE’s adhesive selection guidance.

Check the exposures the joint will face

Assess the joint over its expected service life, not just on the day it is installed. Relevant conditions include rain or immersion, humidity, direct sunlight, temperature changes, movement, and exposure to chemicals. A product that tolerates water may still be unsuitable for UV exposure, a particular temperature range, or a particular surface.

Gorilla Max Strength Construction Adhesive, Clear, 2.5 oz
  • Our strongest formula: This heavy duty glue is 2x stronger than Gorilla Heavy Duty Construction Adhesive Ultimate
  • Crystal clear: Clear Gorilla glue leaves a discreet finish to keep the focus on your project, not the glue
  • All purpose glue: A waterproof glue formulated for virtually all projects and repairs; this Gorilla glue gives indoor or outdoor projects a Gorilla Tough bond, even under water
  • Paintable: Because this adhesive glue works on so many surfaces, it's paintable for any finish that you prefer
  • Gap filling: Gorilla Glue Construction Adhesive also works as a gap filling adhesive caulk for in-home projects
  • Sunlight: UV can degrade adhesive polymers, contributing to cracking, scaling, color change and loss of physical properties.
  • Temperature: Check both application and service limits in the product’s technical data sheet; they are different questions.
  • Movement: For a joint that expands, contracts or flexes, check whether the product is intended to accommodate movement.
  • Water and chemicals: Distinguish splash or rain exposure from immersion, and check the exact chemical-resistance claims for the product and application.

LOCTITE’s category-level comparison rates silicone and modified silicone polymer excellent for UV resistance and one-component polyurethane poor. The same comparison lists category temperature ranges of −55 °C to 121 °C (−67 °F to 250 °F) for two-component epoxy, −40 °C to 80 °C (−40 °F to 176 °F) for one-component polyurethane, and up to 80 °C (176 °F) for modified silicone polymer. These are manufacturer category summaries accessed in 2026, not specifications for every product or formulation; consult the individual product data sheet: LOCTITE’s environmental comparison.

Apply it according to the product instructions

  1. Confirm compatibility: Match the exact product to both surfaces, including coatings, plastics, masonry and treated wood. Do not infer compatibility from a broad product category.
  2. Read the current technical data sheet and label: Follow instructions for surface preparation, application temperature, cure time, paintability and safety.
  3. Account for the actual joint: Consider load and movement as well as water, UV, temperature cycling and chemicals. Confirm that the chosen product is intended for the exposure and function.
  4. Respect restrictions: Do not use products labeled for industrial or occupational use as consumer products, and do not apply a sealant to surfaces its manufacturer excludes.
