For a Phalaenopsis, or moth orchid, the essentials are bright, indirect light, watering when its potting medium is nearly dry, and a pot that drains freely. These instructions focus on Phalaenopsis, one of the orchids commonly grown at home; care varies by orchid type, so do not assume the same routine suits every genus.

Where should I put my orchid?

Place a Phalaenopsis near bright, indirect light, such as by an east- or west-facing window. Direct, intense sun can be too much; a dim room may not provide enough light for healthy growth or flowering. University of Maryland Extension notes that leaf color can offer clues: light green is consistent with suitable light, dark green can point to too little, and yellow-green leaves or reddish margins can indicate excessive light. A grow light is an option if the room is too dim.

How often should I water my orchid?

Check the potting medium rather than watering on a fixed weekday. Water as it approaches dryness, before the plant wilts, then let excess water drain away. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach and University of Maryland Extension both emphasize that frequency depends on conditions, including the medium, container, temperature, humidity, light, season and growth stage. Under normal home temperatures, Maryland says watering is generally not needed more than once a week; that is guidance for typical conditions, not a universal schedule.

Keep roots from sitting in water

Water thoroughly, but do not leave the pot standing in water. Iowa State advises emptying saucers, trays or decorative outer pots within 30 minutes. The American Orchid Society cautions that soggy potting medium can contribute to root rot. A container with drainage holes makes it easier to prevent excess water from accumulating.

What about wrinkled leaves?

Wrinkled leaves can be associated with low humidity or insufficient water, but they do not prove that the plant needs more frequent watering. Roots damaged by persistently wet conditions may also fail to take up water effectively. Check the medium and roots before changing your routine; adding water to an already waterlogged pot can make the underlying problem worse.

How should I feed my orchid?

Use a weak dose of fertilizer while the plant is actively growing, and follow the product label. University of Maryland Extension and Iowa State University Extension and Outreach describe different feeding schedules, so avoid treating one interval as right for every home and growing condition. Do not apply fertilizer to very dry roots. Iowa State also recommends periodically flushing the medium with plain water to help remove accumulated fertilizer salts.

When should I repot my orchid?

Repot when the medium is breaking down, staying too wet, or the plant has outgrown its container. Use a porous orchid medium, commonly bark-based, and a pot that drains well. Do not automatically move the plant into a larger pot: a bigger container is not necessary unless the plant needs the space.

University of Maryland Extension gives a common indoor repotting interval of one to two years; the American Orchid Society gives a broader one-to-three-year range depending on circumstances. Treat those as guides, not deadlines—the condition of the medium and the plant matters.

What should I do after the flowers fade?

A Phalaenopsis may branch from a flower spike that is still alive, but another bloom is not guaranteed. After the last flower fades, Iowa State suggests cutting above the second node as one option. If the spike turns brown or yellow, it can be removed. Use clean pruning scissors for cuts.

If the plant does not flower again, review its light first: insufficient light is a common reason moth orchids fail to bloom. Species-appropriate seasonal temperature changes may also matter, but do not assume that a technique suited to another orchid type will suit a Phalaenopsis.

Are aerial roots normal?

Yes. Phalaenopsis often grow roots above or outside the pot. Healthy aerial roots are normal, so do not cut them just because they are visible.

Are orchids safe around pets?

The ASPCA lists Phalaenopsis as non-toxic to dogs, cats and horses. This applies to Phalaenopsis; check the identity and safety information for other plants rather than assuming all orchids have the same listing.
