Rewilding a yard does not mean abandoning it or removing every patch of lawn. Start with a manageable area—such as a border, parking strip, patio pots, or one section of grass—and shape it into habitat suited to your region, site conditions, and household needs. The strongest designs combine locally appropriate plants with food, shelter, nesting opportunities, and thoughtful upkeep.
What rewilding a yard means
In a residential landscape, rewilding means making some managed space more useful to local plants and animals. It can be a small planting rather than a whole-property conversion: Metro says there is no minimum garden size and identifies pots, patios, parking strips, and yards as possible places to create habitat. Its guiding principle is to provide “food, water, shelter and a safe space for wildlife to survive.” Metro’s backyard habitat guidance is specific to the Portland-area region; the small-scale approach is broadly adaptable.
A habitat-friendly landscape can still have mown paths, play space, clear entrances, and areas for gathering. Keep lawn where it serves a purpose, then consider changing selected areas to native beds, shrubs, flowering ground cover, or a rain garden where drainage conditions and design support one.
How to choose the right habitat project
No single feature suits every yard. Compare options against the site’s sun, soil, moisture, drainage, available area, intended wildlife, household use, appearance, and maintenance capacity. A meadow, rain garden, flowering lawn, and shrub border do different jobs.

| Option | Best fit and function | Considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Native flower or prairie patch | A sunny area where a varied planting can provide flowers and other seasonal resources. | Choose species suited to local conditions; allow room for establishment and invasive-plant control. |
| Rain garden | A site where a properly designed planting can work with runoff and drainage. | Use a design suited to the actual water flow and soil. A rain garden is not a substitute for diagnosing drainage or directing water safely. |
| Layered trees and shrubs | Space for a taller, more structured habitat layer that offers shelter and nesting opportunities. | Check mature size, shade, placement, and household access before planting. |
| Native shade ground cover | Shadier areas where a ground layer can replace or supplement turf. | Select plants for local shade and moisture conditions rather than assuming one ground cover fits every site. |
| Flowering lawn or reduced-mow area | Grass that sees lighter use and can accommodate low-growing flowers or less frequent mowing. | Keep useful, regularly used lawn where needed. Check local ordinances and property rules before changing mowing or front-yard appearance. |
| Hedgerow | A boundary or edge that can accommodate a mix of shrubs and other suitable plants. | Plan for mature width, sightlines, access, and maintenance. |
| Containers | Patios, balconies, and other small spaces where in-ground planting is not practical. | Choose plants for the container’s light and watering conditions, and keep water sources clean if included. |
USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service guidance lists prairie patches, rain gardens, bee lawns, wooded or shrubby native areas, and native ground cover among pollinator-habitat features. Oregon State University Extension also discusses early bulbs, low-growing flowers in lawns, and containers. These are examples to adapt—not a universal prescription for every climate or property.
How to rewild a yard, step by step
- Observe the site. Note sun and shade, soil moisture, drainage, existing plants, invasive species, and how people move through and use the space. Mark areas where planting will not obstruct paths, entrances, visibility, or other safety needs.
- Choose a manageable starting area. Begin with a bed, border, parking strip, patio containers, shrub layer, or a section of lawn. A smaller project makes it easier to learn what grows well before expanding.
- Find a local plant guide. Select regionally native plants that match the site’s sun, soil, and moisture. Verify candidate species with a regional native-plant guide or extension service; a list made for another region may not fit your yard. FHWA recommends ecoregional plant material in its roadside revegetation guidance, a principle that transfers to residential planting without importing roadside specifications.
- Plan food across the season. Use a variety of locally suitable plants so flowers and other food resources are not limited to one brief bloom period. If supporting a particular butterfly or moth is a goal, include its appropriate host plants as well as nectar sources.
- Add layers and useful structure. Where conditions allow, combine ground-layer plants, perennials, shrubs, and trees. Retain open or undisturbed ground where appropriate for local species, and place taller plants so they do not block access or sightlines.
- Prepare and establish the planting. Remove problem invasive plants, prepare the area for the selected plants, and water while they establish as needed. Group plants with similar watering needs. Metro specifically warns against invasive English ivy and recommends grouping plants by watering needs.
- Maintain and adjust. Observe what establishes, control invasive plants, and adapt watering or mowing to the site. Native planting is not maintenance-free: establishment, occasional management, and sometimes mowing or other intervention remain part of the work.
Make existing lawn and garden practices more wildlife-friendly
Keep lawn where it earns its place
Grass can remain in play areas, gathering spaces, paths, or other high-use spots. Reduce mowing in suitable sections, or gradually convert a defined area to native planting or flowering ground cover. Oregon State University Extension discusses low-growing flowers in lawns; suitability depends on local conditions and how the lawn is used.

- Power drill cordless with 1/2" single sleeve ratcheting chuck provides tight bit gripping strength, making bit changes faster and more secure
Reduce pesticide use
Minimize pesticide use where practical, especially in habitat areas intended to support insects and other wildlife. Follow product labels and applicable local requirements when treatment is necessary. EPA’s pollinator-protection guidance offers steps for protecting pollinators.
Leave some winter and spring habitat
Where local species and fire-safety considerations permit, leave some plant stems and organic material through winter. Delay spring cleanup until pollinators are active, rather than cutting everything down as soon as winter ends. Adjust this practice for local pests, fire concerns, and municipal rules.

Provide water only if you can maintain it
A birdbath or other shallow water source can be useful when it can be kept clean and filled, particularly in hot weather. Metro advises keeping bird or insect baths clean and filled during hot weather; a neglected water feature can create problems rather than dependable habitat.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the benefits—and limits—of rewilding are
Native plantings can provide locally relevant food and habitat, but results depend on plant choice, site conditions, and ongoing care. The Federal Highway Administration, citing Ollerton et al. (2011), gives an estimate that 85 percent of the world’s flowering plants depend on animals for pollination. That is a global estimate—not a claim about residential gardens or the share of crops that require pollinators. FHWA’s revegetation report frames successful planting as a process of planning, implementation, monitoring, and maintenance.

Native plants are generally the preferred foundation for locally useful habitat, but avoid unsupported absolutes about every nonnative flower. FHWA’s guidance favors natives for pollinators and cautions against some double-flowered ornamental cultivars. The practical test is whether a plant is appropriate for the region and site, and whether it serves the intended habitat goal.
Check local rules before changing a visible yard
Before adopting a no-mow approach or changing a front-yard landscape, check municipal ordinances, homeowners’ association rules, and other property requirements that apply to your address. Rules vary by jurisdiction; New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection guidance notes that local mowing rules can matter, but it does not establish the rules for other places. Keep plantings clear of sidewalks, driveways, utilities, and sightlines as applicable.
