Most Samsung washer symbols show a cycle status, an enabled setting or a safety state—not a fault. An alphanumeric display code is different and needs code-specific troubleshooting. The icon’s appearance and availability can vary by model and region, so use your washer’s exact manual when a symbol or control sequence is unclear.
First, identify where the symbol appears
Its location is the quickest clue to what it means:
- On the control panel: It usually identifies a setting or an active function, such as steam or Extra Rinse.
- On the display: It may show status, such as remaining time, or an alphanumeric information or error code.
- On a garment label: It is a care instruction for that item, not a washer control.
Samsung notes that washer icons and their appearance vary by model. Compare the icon with the nearby button or setting label, and check the manual for your specific washer if more than one interpretation seems possible. Samsung UK’s symbol guide illustrates common indicators.
Common Samsung washer symbols
These descriptions cover common symbol families, not every Samsung model. The same function may look different across panels, and some features are available only on supported models.

Washer icons, display codes and clothing-label symbols are different
Washer controls and status icons
These show what the washer is doing or which option is selected. A lit door-lock indicator, for example, is a safety status—not an error message.
Alphanumeric information or error codes
A code made of letters and numbers needs code-specific interpretation. Samsung’s washing-machine code guide explains common codes; visually similar characters can be mistaken for one another, including 5 and S or 3 and E. Check the display carefully. If a code is not listed, consult the exact-model manual, then contact Samsung support if the recommended troubleshooting does not resolve it.

Garment care-label symbols
Care symbols printed on clothing tell you how to treat that item. The common families are:
- Washtub: Washing instructions, including temperature or cycle limits.
- Triangle: Bleaching instructions.
- Square: Drying instructions.
- Iron: Ironing instructions and heat limits.
- Circle: Professional-cleaning instructions.
Use the garment label alongside the washer manual: one describes the garment’s care limits, while the other explains the appliance’s controls.

What to do when you cannot identify a symbol
- Check its location. Note whether it is on the panel, in the display, on the detergent drawer or on a clothing label.
- Look for a code. If the display shows letters or numbers rather than a standalone icon, compare each character carefully and use Samsung’s code-specific guidance.
- Check the nearby label and control. A symbol beside a button or setting name may indicate a selectable option; a lit indicator may show that the option is already active.
- Use the exact-model manual. Find the model number on the washer and use it to locate the matching manual. Samsung says cycle and setting instructions vary by model; its US guide to washer cycles, settings and features directs owners to model-specific instructions.
- Keep safety indicators in view. If the door-lock symbol is lit, do not pull the door open. Follow the manual’s instructions for that model.
Why your panel may not match an online symbol chart
Samsung washers differ by model and regional variant. A feature may be absent, use a different graphic, or require a different button sequence. Samsung’s India guide to washer icons, for example, describes a particular control panel that switches off after 10 minutes of inactivity and when a cycle completes; that behavior should not be assumed for every Samsung washer. Use a general chart to narrow down the meaning, then let the exact-model manual settle questions about availability, operation and safety.
