Choose a variety that fits your space, then adjust watering and care to your soil, container, and local weather.
1. Give plants at least six hours of direct sun
Choose the sunniest suitable spot in your yard, raised bed, or patio. Penn State Extension recommends at least six hours of direct sunlight daily for tomatoes. Less sun can limit the light available for growth and fruiting, so consider how nearby trees, buildings, or seasonal shade affect the spot over the day.
2. Plant only when the weather is safe
Tomatoes are warm-season plants, and frost can kill them. Wait until frost danger has passed and conditions are warm enough for outdoor planting; the right date varies by local climate, so use local forecasts and growing guidance rather than a single calendar date.
Before transplanting seedlings outdoors, harden them off gradually over about a week. This transition helps them adjust to outdoor conditions instead of moving directly from a protected setting into full sun and changing weather.

3. Match the variety to your space
Check the seed packet or plant label for growth habit. Determinate varieties tend to be more compact, while indeterminate varieties continue growing and producing flowering clusters through the season. That difference affects how much room and support a plant needs; “cherry tomato” describes fruit type, not a guarantee of compact size.
| Growth habit | What to expect | Planning implication |
|---|---|---|
| Determinate | More compact growth | May suit a smaller growing area; check the specific cultivar’s mature size and support guidance. |
| Indeterminate | Continued vine growth and flowering through the season | Allow room for ongoing growth and plan for support that can accommodate it. |
Penn State Extension describes indeterminate plants as continuing to grow and produce fruiting flowers throughout the season. Cultivar labels remain important because size and care needs vary.

4. Set up containers for roots and drainage
For a single tomato plant, Penn State Extension recommends a container at least 20 inches wide, with drainage holes. This is a practical starting point, not a universal pot prescription: check the cultivar’s guidance and make sure excess water can escape rather than collecting around the roots.
Container growing makes it easier to place a plant in a sunny location, but pots can dry faster than garden soil. Plan to check container moisture regularly, especially in warm or windy weather.

5. Support the plant in a way you can maintain
A cage, stake, or trellis can support tomato growth. Choose based on the variety’s habit, available space, and how much tying and upkeep you can do. There is no single support system established as best for every cherry tomato.
| Support option | Practical consideration |
|---|---|
| Cage | Contains growth within a structure; select one appropriate to the plant’s expected size. |
| Stake | Requires tying the plant as it grows. |
| Trellis | Offers a structure for supported growth; consider the space and ongoing upkeep it requires. |
Do not prune every plant by default. Growth habit and cultivar guidance should shape pruning decisions; compact or dwarf plants may not call for the same approach as vigorous vines.

6. Keep moisture steady, not excessive
Water deeply and consistently, adjusting to the conditions in the actual bed or pot. Check the soil rather than following a rigid calendar: heat, rainfall, soil, and container size all affect how quickly it dries. Containers may need watering daily or even more often during hot weather, but roots should not remain waterlogged.
Both garden beds and containers need regular attention. A pot that dries rapidly and a bed that stays wet after rain have different needs, so check before watering and allow excess water to drain.

7. Mulch the soil surface
A suitable mulch can reduce evaporation and limit soil splashing onto foliage. Keep it as a moisture-management and splash-reduction measure, not a guarantee against disease. Continue to monitor soil moisture beneath it and avoid creating persistently soggy conditions.
8. Make disease-aware habits part of routine care
Give plants airflow, avoid prolonged wet foliage, and rotate tomato planting locations when feasible. These practices can help reduce disease pressure, but they do not guarantee disease-free plants. Cultivar resistance and local growing conditions matter, so use variety information suited to your area.
