Poinsettias became Christmas flowers in two distinct stages: Mexican traditions connected them with the holiday centuries before the plant reached U.S. horticultural audiences, and twentieth-century growers and marketers made them widely available as potted seasonal plants.
How did poinsettias become associated with Christmas?
The poinsettia is native to Mexico and parts of Central America. Its Christmas story began in Mexico, not with its later English name. The Library of Congress describes the Nahuatl name cuetlaxóchitl as meaning “a flower that withers” and cites a 1577 account by Franciscan friar Bernardino de Sahagún describing the plant’s red, pliable leaves. Accounts of Indigenous ritual, dye, cosmetic, or medicinal uses appear in historical sources and legend, so they should not all be treated as equally certain.
By the seventeenth century, Franciscan friars were using the plant in altars and nativity scenes. They called it flor de Nochebuena, or “Holy Night flower,” because it blooms around Christmas. The National Park Service likewise notes that Mexican folklore had memorialized the poinsettia before its association with Joel Poinsett. The plant’s holiday meaning therefore predates both its U.S. introduction and its commercial branding.
How did the plant get the name poinsettia?
Joel Roberts Poinsett, the first U.S. minister to Mexico and an amateur botanist, encountered the plant near Taxco, Guerrero, in 1828, according to the Library of Congress. He sent specimens to his home in South Carolina and to horticultural contacts. This encounter helped bring the plant to U.S. horticultural attention, but it was not the beginning of its Mexican Christmas association.

Philadelphia horticulturalist Robert Buist exhibited a specimen at a flower show in 1829. The Library of Congress says Buist introduced the plant in Europe in the 1830s and named it Euphorbia Poinsettia in honor of Poinsett. The English common name later shortened and outlasted that botanical label.
How did poinsettias become a mass-market potted plant?
From greenhouse curiosity to cut flower
In the nineteenth century, poinsettias were greenhouse curiosities and distinctive but short-lived cut flowers. More colors entered the trade in the 1920s and 1930s, according to the United States Botanic Garden, expanding the plant’s horticultural appeal.

The Ecke family’s role
The Ecke family helped shift poinsettias from cut stems to potted plants, developed new shapes and colors, and promoted them as Christmas flowers. In a 2013 account, the Smithsonian describes this transition and Paul Ecke Sr.’s seasonal marketing. The family also brought poinsettias to prominent venues, including the White House and media outlets such as The Tonight Show, increasing their visibility.
Compact varieties and dependable production
The United States Botanic Garden identifies bushier, compact varieties introduced in the 1960s as a key to mass production and marketing. Compact plants were better suited to growing and selling in pots for the holiday season, helping establish the familiar tabletop poinsettia in U.S. homes.

How popular did poinsettias become?
A 2021 Library of Congress article reported that more than 35 million poinsettias were sold annually in the United States, with most sales concentrated in the six weeks before Christmas. It also reported an approximate $250 million contribution to the U.S. economy. These are figures published in 2021, not verified measurements for 2026.

The USDA Agricultural Research Service describes poinsettia as the leading flowering potted plant in the United States despite its traditional six-week sales period. Its page also gives a wholesale crop-value figure of nearly $170 million as “last year,” but does not clearly date that reference; it should not be read as a current annual value. Separately, the U.S. Botanic Garden said it grew almost 2,000 poinsettias for its 2022 holiday display—a figure specific to that display, not national sales.

Mexico supplied the plant’s early holiday associations; Poinsett and Buist helped circulate it through U.S. and European horticulture; and growers such as the Ecke family helped turn it into a compact, commercially available potted plant. Its popularity rests on both cultural history and practical horticulture: a winter-blooming plant with vivid colored bracts could be cultivated and sold at scale for the season when it was already meaningful.
