White Ash: How to Identify the Tree, Where It Grows, and What Its Wood Is Used For

White ash is an eastern North American hardwood identifiable by pale leaf undersides and U-shaped bud scars. Its shock-resistant wood is valued for bats and handles, while emerald ash borer poses a major threat.

White ash (Fraxinus americana L.) is a deciduous hardwood native to eastern North America. It is recognized by its opposite, compound leaves, pale leaflet undersides and, in winter, U-shaped bud scars. Its strong, shock-resistant wood has long been used for baseball bats, tool handles and other demanding applications. The species is also under serious pressure from emerald ash borer, so planting and firewood decisions should account for current local pest guidance.

How to identify a white ash tree

White ash belongs to the olive family (Oleaceae). Look for several traits together rather than relying on one feature: related ash species can be difficult to distinguish, and appearance varies with season and site.

Leaves and leaflets

The leaves grow opposite one another on the twig and are pinnately compound—each leaf has a central stem, or rachis, bearing several leaflets. White ash usually has seven leaflets. Their undersides are notably pale or whitish, a useful distinction from other eastern ashes. Leaflet margins are often smooth or only shallowly toothed.

Bark and winter twigs

Mature bark is dark gray, with diamond-shaped ridges and furrows. When leaves are absent, examine the buds and the scars left by fallen leaves: white ash has U-shaped bud scars. A regional field guide can help confirm the identification, especially where several ash species grow together. USDA ARS provides a comparison of eastern ash traits in its ash identification guide, and USDA NRCS summarizes the species in its white ash plant guide.

Where white ash grows

White ash is native across much of eastern North America, from Nova Scotia west to eastern Minnesota and south toward Texas and northern Florida. It is most successful on rich, moist, well-drained soils, especially upland sites. It commonly grows alongside hardwoods such as sugar maple, northern red oak and yellow birch, but is not generally a dominant forest species. The USDA Forest Service describes its range and habitat in its white ash species account.

What white ash wood is used for

White ash wood is valued for strength, hardness and shock resistance. The USDA Forest Service identifies handles, oars and baseball bats among its uses; the USDA NRCS plant guide also lists furniture, doors, veneer, canoe paddles, snowshoes and boats. These properties make the species relevant to construction and woodworking where a tough, resilient hardwood is suitable, though the right material depends on the project and its conditions.

White ash is a documented material used in baseball bats, but a product listing that says only “ash” does not by itself establish that the wood is specifically Fraxinus americana. Check the maker’s material description when the species matters. The USDA Forest Service and NRCS discuss the wood’s properties and uses in their white ash wood reference.

Planting white ash: site and pest considerations

USDA NRCS says white ash grows best in deep, moist, well-drained soil, can be transplanted and has been used to restore disturbed sites. Its guide favors planting seedlings over direct seeding and recommends mixing them with other hardwoods. These are general species recommendations, not a guarantee of success at a particular site. Before planting, check local pest conditions and advice from your extension service; ash is susceptible to pests and diseases.

Emerald ash borer and white ash

Emerald ash borer is an invasive beetle from Asia whose larvae feed beneath ash bark. USDA APHIS says the pest has been detected in 38 states and the District of Columbia, and its current page states that tens of millions of ash trees in North America have been affected. Those are agency statements on a current webpage accessed in 2026, not a newly measured annual estimate; pest maps and local conditions can change. See the USDA APHIS emerald ash borer page for current information.

Long-distance movement of infested firewood, logs or nursery stock can help spread the beetle. APHIS recommends buying local or certified heat-treated firewood and advises consulting local Cooperative Extension agents about whether tree treatment is appropriate. The agency says federal domestic quarantine regulations were removed in 2020, effective January 14, 2021; that change does not replace current state or local guidance. Check applicable rules before moving firewood or planting ash.
