There is no evidence-based single “best” washing machine for horse blankets. The right choice depends on the blanket’s care label and whether that specific blanket fits the machine without being crammed. A home washer may work when its capacity and specifications suit the blanket; bulky or heavy blankets may need a commercial equine washer or a professional cleaning service.
Choose by blanket fit and care instructions—not a universal drum size
Horse-blanket makers do not establish a universal household washer capacity or rank consumer models. WeatherBeeta says its blankets may be washed at home when the washer’s capacity and specifications are suitable. Horseware advises using a machine with enough capacity for heavy-duty washing and warns that a heavy blanket may not wash properly if crammed into a home washer. Check the care label for your particular blanket before choosing a machine or cycle.
- Blanket fit: It must fit without being forced or packed tightly into the drum.
- Label compatibility: Confirm machine washing, temperature, cycle, cleaner, and any proofing directions.
- Rinsing: The machine must be able to rinse out the chosen cleaner fully.
- Drying: Have a way to air-dry the blanket completely; do not assume tumble drying is suitable.
- Service suitability: If considering a commercial cleaner, confirm it accepts your blanket type.
These criteria are more useful than a generic capacity number: the cited manufacturer guidance does not give a minimum capacity that guarantees a safe or effective wash.

Prepare the blanket before washing
- Read the blanket’s care label. Use it to determine whether machine washing is allowed and which cycle, temperature, cleaner, and proofing steps apply. If directions are unclear, ask the blanket’s maker or use a suitable professional service.
- Remove loose dirt, mud, and hair. Brush or hose off excess debris before loading the machine. Horseware notes that hair can lodge in seams.
- Handle straps and hardware as directed. Follow the label or maker’s instructions on what to secure or remove before washing.
- Recheck the fit. Do not proceed if the blanket has to be crammed into the drum.
Do not use a power washer on waterproof turnout fabric: Horseware warns that pressure can damage its waterproof layer.
Choose a wash cycle and cleaner the label permits
Care recommendations differ by maker, so none of the settings below should be treated as universal. WeatherBeeta recommends a gentle delicate cycle and mild soap or a reputable rug cleaner for its blankets, while Horseware’s care guidance recommends cool water and a delicate cycle. Follow your own blanket’s directions if they differ.

- WeatherBeeta warns that detergents and fabric conditioners may compromise its waterproof, breathable coating; it recommends no fabric conditioner and says to follow the blanket maker’s proofing directions.
- WeatherBeeta gives Nikwax Blanket Wash as an example of a cleaner. Horseware’s reproduced guidance names Eco Rug Wash for synthetic fabrics. Treat both as examples only; verify compatibility with the blanket’s fabric and care directions.
- Horseware’s reproduced instructions recommend annual cleaning, hand washing or a commercial washer on a delicate cool cycle, very mild soap, and complete drip drying. Those instructions are Horseware-specific and should not override another blanket’s label.
- STAHL, a commercial laundry-equipment maker, advises a soak to loosen coarse dirt and hair, manufacturer-recommended detergent, a wash at no more than 30 °C, and a gentle spin for its commercial-machine context. It reports approximately 80% residual moisture after that gentle spin on its professional machine; this is not a consumer-washer setting or a universal result.
Air-dry fully before storing
Horseware and WeatherBeeta advise drip or line drying rather than tumble drying. Allow the blanket to dry completely before storage. Horseware’s reproduced care instructions warn that storing it damp may damage the waterproof coating and void the warranty; check the current instructions and warranty terms for your own blanket.

University of Minnesota Extension’s 2022 page, “Caring for your horse in the winter,” reports an online survey conducted from December 1, 2020, to January 5, 2021, with 1,450 responses. In that survey, 54% of respondents said they blanketed most of their horses. Respondents commonly reported spending $51–$200 purchasing blankets and less than $50 per horse per year maintaining them. These are survey categories reported by respondents, not current prices, washer costs, or figures for all horse owners. The survey does not establish a washer capacity, comparative cleaning performance, or a rate of machine damage.
