Yes. Backyard chickens can expose people to germs even when the birds look clean and healthy, and illness can also spread through contaminated coop areas, equipment, clothing, or footwear. Good hygiene and flock biosecurity reduce risk, but neither guarantees a disease-free flock. The practical approach is to protect household members, handle eggs safely, and act promptly if birds become sick.

What health risks can backyard chickens pose to people?

The main concern is contact with germs carried by poultry or left in areas where birds live and roam. Salmonella is a particular risk: birds can carry it without appearing ill, and germs can transfer to feeders, coop surfaces, shoes, and other equipment. A person may become infected after touching a bird or contaminated surface and then touching food or their mouth without washing their hands.

The CDC also lists bird flu, Campylobacter, E. coli, and histoplasmosis among diseases associated with backyard poultry. This does not mean every flock carries every germ or that every keeper will become sick. There is no established single probability for an individual chicken keeper’s risk.

Salmonella symptoms and people at higher risk

Common Salmonella symptoms include diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps. According to the CDC’s Salmonella guidance, symptoms usually begin 6 hours to 6 days after swallowing the bacteria, and most people recover without treatment in 4 to 7 days. Children younger than five, adults 65 and older, and people with weakened immune systems are more likely to have severe illness that may require medical care or hospitalization.

Children younger than five should not handle poultry or spend time in areas where birds live and roam. Supervise older children around poultry, and take extra care to keep young children, older adults, and immunocompromised household members away from avoidable exposure.

How can bird flu and other flock diseases spread?

Wild birds can expose backyard flocks to avian influenza viruses. Infected poultry can become very ill and usually die; people who are exposed to sick, infected birds have increased risk of infection. Avian diseases can also spread when contaminated equipment, clothing, vehicles, feed, or water move between places where birds are kept. Biosecurity lowers these risks; it cannot ensure a flock will remain disease-free.

Human illness from bird flu is rare but can be severe. A CDC report published May 7, 2026 documented a fatal H5N5 case in a Washington backyard-flock owner following an illness in November 2025. The report described daily flock care and contact with ducks and chickens. One case report cannot establish how likely illness is for other poultry owners.

How can you reduce risks to your household?

Make handwashing and separation routine

  • Wash hands with soap and water immediately after touching birds, eggs, or anything in the birds’ living or roaming area.
  • Keep poultry and coop supplies—including feed containers and coop shoes—outside the home. Do not wear coop footwear indoors.
  • Do not kiss or snuggle poultry, or eat and drink where birds are kept.
  • Keep children supervised around poultry; children younger than five should not handle birds or spend time in their living areas.
  • Clean tools and equipment before moving them between poultry areas. Remove manure, feathers, mud, and other visible debris before using a disinfectant, and follow its label for use and contact time. Dirt and other organic matter can interfere with disinfectants.

Dedicated coop footwear or disposable boot covers can help separate poultry-area footwear from household shoes, but neither replaces handwashing or other biosecurity measures. USDA-APHIS advises removing debris before using a footbath and keeping it clean.

How can you protect the flock?

Protecting bird health also helps limit opportunities for disease to spread. CDC recommends routine veterinary care and a safe, sturdy outdoor environment, with feeders and waterers that are easy to clean and disinfect.

Use a consistent biosecurity routine

  • Minimize visitors to poultry areas.
  • Wash hands before and after poultry contact; use footwear controls and change clothes around poultry areas when appropriate.
  • Clean and disinfect tools and equipment before they move between poultry facilities. Remove visible debris first, then follow the disinfectant label.
  • Keep wild birds away from flock feed and water where possible.
  • Care for the established flock before tending new birds. Keep new poultry separate for at least 30 days before introducing them, and ask a poultry-experienced veterinarian or extension agent for advice.

In a CDC online survey conducted July 23–December 3, 2025, 638 backyard-flock owners from 48 U.S. states responded. Among those respondents, 54% said wild birds could, or sometimes could, access their flock’s food or water; 29% said they had a veterinarian; and approximately one third were unaware of signs and symptoms of avian influenza in birds or humans. These are survey results from respondents, not representative estimates of all U.S. flock owners.

What signs of illness should you watch for?

CDC lists these signs that poultry may be sick:

  • Eating or drinking less than normal
  • Ruffled feathers or runny diarrhea
  • Discharge from the eyes or nose, or difficulty breathing
  • Fewer eggs, or eggs that are discolored, irregular, or misshapen
  • Unexpected death

These signs do not by themselves diagnose bird flu. Contact a veterinarian or local extension agent to help identify the cause. For sudden deaths, unusual illness, or suspected avian influenza, contact local animal-health authorities promptly and follow their instructions; reporting procedures vary by location. USDA-APHIS advises reporting sick or dying birds to a state veterinarian or USDA. Its Defend the Flock page provides the USDA number 1-866-536-7593.

Where should backyard chicken keepers get help?

Before an emergency, identify a veterinarian experienced with poultry or a local extension service that can advise on bird health and local reporting steps. If birds become ill, seek veterinary or extension guidance rather than trying to diagnose the cause from symptoms alone. For suspected avian influenza or sudden deaths, contact your state veterinarian or USDA promptly.
