“Quartz-infused concrete” refers to a 2012 report on Iranian research into ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC), not a verified announcement of a finished or commercially deployed national technology. The work described in the report combined different approaches involving quartz flour, fibers and metal-oxide nanoparticles. Quartz is one possible ingredient in UHPC, not a stand-alone recipe or the sole source of the material’s performance.
What the 2012 report described
In a report published on 5 March 2012, Duncan Geere of WIRED UK named Mahmoud Nili of Bu-Ali Sina University and Ali Nazari and colleagues at Islamic Azad University as researchers working on concrete intended to address demanding structural challenges. Geere’s opening framed those challenges as earthquakes and bombs; it was journalistic context, not a quotation from a named engineer or a formal engineering finding. Read the WIRED report.
Two research directions
- The report said Nili was using polypropylene fibers and quartz flour.
- It described Nazari’s group investigating small samples containing oxides of iron, aluminum, zirconium, titanium and copper.
The report suggested scaling the work might produce concrete four times stronger than the strongest existing commercial mixes. That was a possibility presented in 2012, not a demonstrated full-scale result. The original Iranian experimental papers behind these claims are not established by the available source material.
What UHPC is—and what quartz contributes
Ultra-high-performance concrete is an engineered cementitious composite, not a single standardized recipe. Mixes are designed through selection and proportioning of constituents to achieve targeted properties. Depending on the formulation, they may use cement, silica fume, fine quartz sand or quartz powder, fibers, and other materials. Low water-to-binder ratios and superplasticizers can help maintain flowability in a dense mixture. A 2021 review of UHPC constituents and a mixture-development study describe these ingredients and design considerations.

- FOR EASY REPAIRS — It's the ideal concrete patch repair mix, neatly fixing cracks and spalls so your property looks like new. It's even textured for a more seamless blend with the existing structure
- TOUGH AND DURABLE — Formulated to avoid shrinking or cracking, the ready-to-use premixed cement patch offers good adhesion and high strength so your slabs, walls & walkways/sidewalks perform as good as ever
- EASY CLEANUP — Sika concrete patch is acrylic-based, so once application is done, it cleans up using only water. No need for special cleaners and chemicals
- GREEN — It follows regulations concerning the use of volatile organic compounds (VOC), helping to keep the air we breathe cleaner and fresher
- A BREEZE TO USE — Minimal prep is required, since it comes premixed. Just use a putty or trowel to spread where repairs are needed. It takes only a few hours to set and about a day for a full cure
Quartz flour—ground crystalline quartz, also called silica flour—can serve as a fine filler. Its particles can help reduce voids and improve packing in the cementitious matrix. That role does not mean quartz alone makes concrete ultra-high-performance: the result depends on the full mix, its proportions, fibers and reinforcement, processing, and curing.
What the blast-resistance claim does—and does not—show
Geere’s WIRED report said the U.S. Defence Threat Reduction Agency had investigated Iran’s concrete capabilities since 2008. It also described Australian government testing in which a charge equivalent to six tonnes of TNT fractured UHPC panels without shattering them. The primary test report, panel specifications and test conditions are not identified in the available source material, so this account should be treated as secondary reporting—not as proof that UHPC structures or bunkers are bomb-proof.

- VERSATILE: Formulated for creating custom surfaces such as countertops, bars, tabletops, workbenches, wall caps, and mantels.
- EXCEPTIONAL STRENGTH: Delivers high-strength performance, achieving over 10,000 psi compressive strength after 28 days and over 3,000 psi within 24 hours.
- RAPID SETTING COMPOSITION: Features a fast-setting composition for efficient project completion and durable, reliable results.
- SIMPLE APPLICATION: Designed for straightforward application, requiring only the addition of water, mixing, and pouring.
- FLEXIBLE CASTING: Supports both cast-in-place and reverse cast application techniques for diverse project needs.
Blast response depends on the particular material, panel or structure, geometry, reinforcement, installation and loading conditions. A report about panels cannot establish how every UHPC mix or completed building would perform.
Why one strength number cannot compare UHPC with ordinary concrete
UHPC can offer high mechanical performance and durability, but both depend on the formulation and intended use. A useful comparison with conventional concrete considers more than compressive strength:

Reviews of UHPC discuss its potential benefits alongside cost and practical production challenges; specialized batching, mixing and curing may be required. The 2021 review and a 2016 review of performance and implementation provide broader context.

Research associated with Iranian institutions continued after the 2012 report, but it does not establish that the specific mixes described then were commercially deployed.

- Over 1 million square feet and counting! Our time-tested mix has been revered for over 20 years. Perfect for creating a wide range of items, from kitchen and bath countertops to furniture and tabletops. Discover why it's a favorite among concrete pros and DIYers alike!
- Combine 1 bag of CX Pro-Formula with 120 lbs of 5,000 PSI concrete to produce roughly 1 cubic foot (enough for 7 square feet at a 1-1/2 inch thickness).
- Available in 16 rich colors, all can be polished to expose aggregates within the concrete.
- Color reproduction may vary depending upon your browser, monitor, and software settings. Your local cement sources, aggregate condition, and other variables will impact the final color of concrete. The colors shown here are representational only and should not be used as a basis for exact color matching. We recommend casting samples prior to casting any project.
- CX Pro-Formula Precast Concrete Countertop Mix should NOT be used with bagged concrete mixes that contain air entrainment admixtures or water-reducers.
Implementation risks
A 2023 study assessed risks of using UHPC in structural applications across economic, technical and environmental dimensions. Its focus highlights that material performance is only one part of deciding whether a structural application is feasible. See the 2023 multi-criteria risk analysis.
Transportation infrastructure mix
A study first published online on 10 December 2023, later appearing in a July 2024 issue, examined a transportation-infrastructure UHPC mix using microsilica, nanosilica, fly ash, garnet and basalt aggregates, and steel fibers. It evaluated fresh, mechanical and durability properties. This is a later, distinct formulation—not evidence of commercial deployment of the 2012 research. See the transportation-infrastructure study.

A separate model of quartz under extreme conditions
A 2013 modeling study considered alpha-quartz transforming to coesite in UHPC subjected to dynamic loading and hydrostatic pressure up to 10 GPa. That figure describes the model’s pressure range; it is not a field test or a performance measure for ordinary structures. Read the modeling study.
Practical takeaway for construction decisions
The 2012 headline points to reported Iranian research into UHPC, not a ready-to-use construction product. Quartz flour is a possible constituent, but buying or adding it alone does not produce structural UHPC. Any structural specification needs a qualified mix design, verified product documentation, appropriate testing, and engineering suited to the project’s loading and exposure conditions.
