A mix of bird feeder styles can make a backyard more interesting to watch because different birds feed in different ways. Choose feeders around the birds and foods you hope to support, then keep them clean, dry and safely placed. No feeder can guarantee particular visitors: local bird communities and conditions vary.

Choose feeder styles for different ways birds feed

Think of feeder choice as a match between bird group, food, placement and the upkeep you can manage. A sturdy feeder that comes apart for cleaning and protects food from rain is generally a more useful choice than an elaborate design that is difficult to maintain. Cornell Lab notes that feeder types serve different birds and advises choosing cleanable designs: How to Choose the Right Kind of Bird Feeder.

Feeder style Who it may serve Food and placement Weather and cleaning considerations
Tube Shrub- and treetop-feeding birds; the exact visitors depend on the area and food. Use seed suited to the birds you hope to attract; mount where you can reach it for refilling and cleaning. Choose a design that comes apart. Check for seed collecting below the ports and remove old residue rather than letting it stagnate.
Hopper A broad range of seed-eating birds, including larger visitors; Audubon groups these with feeders for shrub and treetop birds. Fill with appropriate seed and place where the feeder can be reached and monitored. A roof can help shelter food, but inspect it for damp or spoiled seed and make sure its parts are accessible for cleaning.
Platform or tray Ground-feeding birds that use an open surface. Offer suitable food on a stable, accessible platform. The open surface is exposed to weather and contamination. Keep food dry and clear away soiled or stale leftovers.
Suet Woodpeckers, nuthatches and chickadees, according to Audubon. Use suet in a purpose-made feeder; Audubon’s general advice is to place it above ground. Choose a secure, cleanable holder and check it regularly for mess or deterioration.
Window Birds drawn to the food offered; the close position can make observation easier. Attach it securely to a window and keep the glass bird-safe. Cornell notes that a busy window feeder can offer close viewing and may help keep birds safe from collisions, but the feeder alone does not remove collision risk. Because it is close to the house, it is easy to inspect and clean. Keep both the feeder and surrounding glass maintained.

These are practical categories, not a ranking or a claim that one style is best for every yard. Audubon’s overview of feeder types and placement is at 11 Tips for Feeding Backyard Birds.

Match the food to the visitors you want to support

Birdseed is not a universal draw. Food affects which birds visit, and some familiar backyard birds rarely take seed. Audubon notes that fruit specialists such as robins, waxwings, bluebirds and mockingbirds rarely eat birdseed. A seed feeder alone may therefore miss birds that depend more on fruit or other natural foods.

  • Keep seed dry, and remove it if it becomes damp, clumped or soiled.
  • If you offer hummingbird nectar, do not treat it as maintenance-free: high-sugar food can spoil quickly and requires frequent cleaning. Audubon recommends briefly boiling nectar to sterilize it and dissolve sugar crystals; red food coloring is unnecessary.

For feeder and food guidance, see Cornell Lab’s feeder guide and Audubon’s feeding tips.

Make upkeep part of the feeder plan

Cornell Lab recommends cleaning seed feeders about once every two weeks, and more often during heavy use or wet weather. Regular cleaning helps prevent leftover food and grime from becoming a problem. Its instructions are in How to Clean Your Bird Feeder (dated August 20, 2024).

  1. Take the feeder apart if its design allows, and discard old or spoiled food.
  2. Wash it in a dishwasher if the manufacturer says it is dishwasher-safe, or hand-wash with soap and boiling water or a dilute bleach solution.
  3. If using bleach, Cornell advises a solution no stronger than one part bleach to nine parts water; its guidance reports that a 10-minute soak in dilute bleach is effective in addition to scrubbing.
  4. Rinse as appropriate, let the feeder dry fully, and follow the manufacturer’s care instructions before refilling.

Check for local reports of salmonella or sick birds and follow current local guidance if concerns arise. A feeder that is easy to take apart and clean is more practical to keep in service than one whose design makes thorough cleaning difficult.

Place feeders with birds and other wildlife in mind

Position feeders where you can keep an eye on them and reach them for cleaning. Audubon’s general tips describe pole-mounted feeders about five feet off the ground and a cone-shaped baffle at least 17 inches in diameter to deter squirrels. Those broad measures are not a guarantee against every predator or nuisance animal; adjust placement to your site and local wildlife.

Use plants to make the yard more inviting

Feeders are one part of a lively backyard, not the whole habitat. Regionally native plants can provide natural food and shelter. Cornell Lab explains that plants adapted to your region are more likely to thrive without pesticides or watering and can offer food suited to native birds. Choose plants for your local conditions rather than assuming one list fits every yard; Cornell’s guide to seeds and shelter offers more detail.
