You can reuse clean plastic food packaging, bottles, tubs and trays for practical garden jobs—from starting seeds to catching runoff. Choose containers that suit the plant or task, make sure growing containers drain, and avoid plastic with a chemical-use history. Purpose-made seed trays are optional: suitable containers already at home can work.
Before reusing a plastic container
Check its history, condition and shape before putting it to work. For edible crops, choose containers known to be food-grade and never use containers that held chemicals. Maryland Extension discusses food-grade plastic codes and contamination cautions in its container gardening guidance; this is specific guidance from that source, not a guarantee about every plastic item or its past use. Wash containers well before use.
- Match size to the job. A small cup may suit a seedling, but a deep-rooted plant needs enough depth and volume for its roots. A shallow tub is not a substitute for a larger planter.
- Plan for drainage. Most containers used for growing plants need holes so excess water can escape. If the holes sit flat against a hard surface and become blocked, raise the container on pot feet, bricks or scrap lumber. Do not add gravel or broken pottery to the bottom: Maryland Extension warns that this can raise the water table and worsen waterlogging.
- Check the plastic over time. Plastic tends to retain moisture longer than porous pot materials, so check the growing medium before watering. Dark containers may warm it. Sunlight and weather can also degrade plastic; stop using containers that have become brittle, cracked or visibly degraded, especially for edible crops. See the Royal Horticultural Society’s container-growing guide.
9 ways to use plastic containers in your garden
1. Start seeds in food containers
Clean salad boxes, muffin containers and yogurt cups can serve as seed-starting containers if they are deep enough and have drainage holes. Use sterile, soilless seed-starting mix rather than garden soil, which can be too heavy or introduce weeds or disease. The University of Georgia Cooperative Extension describes plastic trays and repurposed salad or muffin containers as options. A purpose-made tray is not essential when a clean container you already own fits the job.
2. Make a clear lidded container a germination cover
A transparent lid can help retain warmth and moisture around seeds. Set it over a suitable seed container, but keep an eye on moisture and airflow rather than treating a sealed, humid environment as automatically better. Remove the cover once seeds sprout, as UGA Extension advises. A clear hinged bottle can also act as a small greenhouse over a seed pot; the Botanic Gardens of Sydney describes this reuse approach.

3. Build a wick-fed bottle planter
A clean bottle can become a simple self-watering planter. With adult supervision for cutting, cut the bottle, invert its neck into the base, and thread a natural-fabric wick through the neck. The lower end should reach water in the base while the upper end reaches the growing mix. Capillary action draws water toward the mix. This DIY reservoir does not remove the need to monitor moisture: watering needs still depend on the plant and its conditions.
4. Plant in a food-grade tub or bucket
A larger food-grade bucket or storage tub can become a planter when it has enough depth and volume for the plant’s roots and drainage holes for excess water. Maryland Extension lists buckets and storage containers among possible options. Choose the container for the plant rather than assuming any large-looking tub will suit every crop.

6. Scoop potting mix with a sturdy takeout container
A thick plastic takeout container can be a handy scoop for moving potting mix. The University of Florida IFAS Extension specifically suggests this small garden use.

Reuse plastic silverware as garden markers, another UF/IFAS suggestion. Write labels clearly and place or secure markers where watering and weather are less likely to erase the writing or move them.

- For seed starting: Is it clean, deep enough for the start, and able to drain? Use clear lids only when you can monitor moisture and remove the cover after sprouting.
- For a planter: Does its depth and volume suit the plant’s roots? Can you add drainage holes safely, and can the container sit without those holes being blocked?
- For a reservoir planter: Can the wick reach both the water reservoir and growing mix? Are you able to check moisture rather than relying on the reservoir alone?
- For reuse with edible crops: Do you know it is food-grade and that it was never used for chemicals? Is the plastic still sound rather than brittle or cracked?
- For a germination cover: Is it transparent, and does its lid fit well enough to retain moisture while still allowing you to check conditions?
