If you want a different result, choose string art for a hands-on wall piece, drill a cone holder from a stable board for serving, or select purpose-made yard art for outdoor display. “Unfinished wood” can be a ready-shaped plywood blank—not lumber you need to cut into a cone yourself.
Choose a project by what you want to make

These are different kinds of projects, not interchangeable blanks. Pick based on the display location, tools you have, and whether the finished piece will be outdoors. The cited sources do not provide controlled difficulty ratings or comparative durability tests.
Make a summer sign with cone cutouts
Bee Inspired with Carol describes an 18-inch sign decorated with six wooden ice cream cone shapes. The project starts with painting the board, then decorating the cone shapes with paper and arranging and attaching them. Its materials include cardstock, summer scrapbook paper, white chalk paint, acrylic paints, wooden letters spelling “SUMMER,” modeling paste, glitter or faux sprinkles, Mod Podge, scissors, a sanding sponge, paintbrushes, and hot glue. The tutorial author recommends cardstock of at least 65 lb to help prevent printed ink from bleeding. That is the author’s project tip, not a guarantee for every printer, paper, or finish. Plan the layout before gluing so the cones and lettering fit the board.

Select a blank that fits the layout
One documented option is a Woodpeckers Crafts ice cream cone cutout listed as Baltic birch plywood, 1/4 inch thick, 12 inches long, and approximately 5-13/16 inches wide. The seller suggests painting, staining, wood burning, or decoupage; those are listed uses, not independent test results. Check the cutout listing for current dimensions and availability.
Another seller listing describes a 1/8-inch birch plywood blank, so shaped cutouts are not all the same thickness. Review the other blank listing. Match the size and thickness to how you plan to decorate and display the piece, and verify the current listing details before buying.

Try a string-art cone on a wood board
Westmount Public Library provides instructions titled “String Art Ice Cream Cone.” The instructions say painting or staining the wood board is optional. Use the complete string-art instruction PDF for the pattern and project directions rather than assuming that a shaped cone cutout uses the same method. This is a board-based craft, unlike the paper-and-paint sign.
Drill a functional cone holder

- Choose the number and spacing of openings, then mark their centers on the board.
- Clamp the board securely before drilling; the tutorial specifically calls for two table clamps.
- Drill the openings with a 1/2-inch spade bit or a larger bit if you want the cones to sit lower.
- Sand the interiors if needed, then wipe away drilling debris.
The tutorial does not establish that a particular board or finish is safe for food contact, nor that every board is suitable. Do not treat the project description as a food-safety certification.

Ivy’s Wood Creations lists an ice cream cone yard-art sign in 12- or 18-inch sizes and offers a DIY paint-kit option. The seller says the sign uses 1/2-inch MDO plywood and exterior semi-gloss enamel. Check the yard-art listing for size and kit details. This construction is distinct from a generic unfinished craft blank; the seller’s material and paint description does not establish a lifespan or exposure rating.

Match the project to your tools and setting
- For a paper-and-paint project: choose the multi-cone sign and gather its craft materials before arranging the pieces.
