For a costume prop, choose based on your tools and desired control: the gravity design avoids electronics, while the other two add powered movement and more components. None of the cited builds establishes that its claws are safe for striking, stage combat, or use as a weapon.
Choose a mechanism before gathering parts
The three documented approaches differ most in how the claws move and what the wearer must carry. There is no controlled head-to-head test, verified cost comparison, reliability data, runtime figure, or measured force data for these projects, so the choice is about your build goals—not a proven universal winner.

Build a gravity-driven slider
This is the least electronics-heavy documented route. The basic idea is a shaped dowel that slides through an arm tube and an end tube, with a thicker shoulder acting as a stop. Gravity moves the claw when the arm angle changes.
- Plan the fit. The claw must slide freely through both tubes, while its shoulder must be wide enough to catch at the end. Allow for the extra thickness of paint or foil when planning clearance.
- Shape the dowels and assemble the tubes. The Adafruit summary does not establish reliable dimensions or provide the original tutorial’s full construction details. Use the original Instructables build as the reference for measurements rather than guessing from the summary.
- Check travel and retention off-body. Confirm that the claw moves without sticking and cannot pass through its stop. Avoid sharp edges; this is a costume prop, not a striking tool.

Build a servo-controlled prop
A servo route suits a maker who can print or obtain the project’s custom parts and is comfortable checking wiring, code, and mechanical fit. The component categories vary by design, so there is no single verified parts list that applies to every version.
Pick a control method
- Force-sensitive resistor: Wolverino documents a lower-cost Arduino-and-servo variant using an FSR for MMG-style control. Its repository characterizes this approach as more temperamental than its EMG version.
- Muscle sensor: Wolverino also documents an EMG variant. Advancer Technologies’ MYOWARE tutorial describes claws that extend when the forearm flexes and retract when it relaxes; sustained flex activates a lock mode.
Check the design files and components
The MYOWARE tutorial names a MYOWARE 2.0 muscle sensor, Arduino Pro Mini 5V, 180-degree servo, 7.2V NiMH battery pack, wrist guard, servo wire and linkage, and printed parts. Those are components for that tutorial, not a universal bill of materials. Before purchasing or assembling, check voltage compatibility, servo travel, enclosure dimensions, sensor compatibility, and the selected project’s wiring and code. The Wolverino repository includes project files, but component availability and firmware compatibility should be verified for your chosen build.

The MYOWARE tutorial introduces a version with 4-inch claws and estimates about 2.5 hours to build. Both figures describe that tutorial’s project; the time is the publisher’s estimate, not a guaranteed completion time. See the MYOWARE build instructions.
Consider pneumatics only if you can manage the added system
Vaughn Khouri’s 2022 costume uses a backpack containing an air compressor, LiFePO4 battery, pressure transducer, tank, regulator, and solenoid valve. The maker reports switch-operated extension and retraction of 10-inch-long claws. This is a substantially more involved wearable arrangement than a simple slider or servo linkage; the project description does not establish its safety, force, durability, or runtime.

Build and test with prop safety in mind
The cited makers document mechanisms, not safety certification. Treat these as prudent precautions for a wearable costume prop, not as procedures validated by the projects:
- Test movement off-body before wearing the assembly.
- Keep the claws blunt and lightweight, and use travel stops to limit movement.
- Guard pinch points around sliders and linkages; power down before adjusting powered mechanisms.
- For electronics, include a delay to reduce the risk of pinching fingers while connecting the battery, and consider a switch between the battery and harness, as the MYOWARE tutorial advises.
- Do not adapt metal-claw designs for weapon use or combat.
Hasbro’s warning for its F7975 role-play toy is explicit: “CAUTION: Do not swing, poke, or jab at people or animals.” That warning applies to Hasbro’s toy, not as a certification for DIY builds. Hasbro product details and warning.

Prefer a ready-made role-play claw?
Hasbro lists its Marvel Studios X-Men ’97 Wolverine Slash Action Claw (item F7975) for ages 5 and up. The product page describes a 7-inch extension and adjustable wrist strap; it says availability varies. No current price or stock status is stated on the cited page. Hasbro also warns that the toy may generate small parts and is not for children under 3.
