There is no universal electrical-safety rule in the cited guidance that says you must avoid showering whenever a washing machine is running. The concern is a fault: damaged wiring, failed insulation, or missing or defective earthing can allow electricity to reach conductive parts or nearby water. Because wet skin offers less resistance, a shock in a shower can be more severe. If you feel tingling or receive a shock, stop using the suspected equipment and get a qualified electrician to assess it.
Why the warning exists
Electrical faults can let current escape from equipment or wiring. If a fault energizes a washing machine, tap, or other conductive part, someone touching it while wet may be at greater risk: wet skin reduces the body’s resistance. Electrical Safety First describes this added bathroom risk in its UK guidance: Electrical Safety Advice for the Bathroom.
Tokyo Metropolitan Government describes a person who felt a shock at a bathroom tap after a gas water heater leaked current, and another who felt a shock while a washing machine showed an error during filling. These are fault cases, not evidence that every washer cycle makes a shower unsafe: Tokyo Metropolitan Government’s water-area electrical safety guidance.
A 1998 newspaper report also recounts a shower shock in a home where a washing machine was later found to be unearthed. That anecdote points to an installation fault; it does not establish a general causal link between normal washer operation and showering: The Independent report.

Does running a washer make showering unsafe?
The sources document shocks associated with electrical faults, but they do not establish that simultaneous operation alone makes an otherwise sound installation dangerous. The practical distinction is between a functioning, correctly installed appliance and a suspected faultβnot simply whether the washer is on.
Household washing machines are covered by product-safety standards addressing electrical and thermal hazards. The IEC listing for IEC 60335-2-7:2019 does not establish whether an individual machine complies, whether a home’s wiring is sound, or whether using it during a shower is safe.

What grounding and RCD/GFCI protection doβand do not do
Earthing (grounding) and residual-current protection serve different purposes. Proper grounding provides a fault-current path as required by applicable electrical rules; an RCD or GFCI is designed to interrupt certain fault currents. Neither should be treated as proof that an appliance or installation is fault-free.
In a 1999 workplace interpretation, OSHA said a GFCI may prevent electrocution but may not prevent the initial shock before it trips, and does not replace required equipment grounding: OSHA’s interpretation on grounding requirements. OSHA’s GFCI guidance likewise explains that these devices do not protect against every line-contact hazard. These are US workplace sources, not a complete statement of residential requirements in every country.

Electrical Safety First says its UK guidance requires RCD protection for circuits in or passing through bathrooms or shower rooms. Requirements differ by jurisdiction, so have bathroom electrical work assessed against local rules rather than applying one country’s guidance everywhere.
What to do if you feel a shock or notice a warning sign
- Stop using the suspected equipment. If you feel tingling or receive a shock from the shower, tap, washer, or another appliance, do not continue using it.
- Do not investigate live electrical parts yourself. Do not open the washer, handle wiring, bypass a protective device, or rely on a plug-in socket tester to declare the installation safe.
- Arrange qualified assessment. Ask a qualified electrician to check the appliance and installation. Electrical Safety First recommends a registered electrician for bathroom installation work in the UK.
- Treat other warning signs seriously. A repeatedly tripping protective device, damaged or hot plug or socket, burn marks, or crackling or arcing sounds warrant qualified assessment. Do not keep resetting a device to continue using the equipment.
A consumer socket tester cannot rule out every fault. The UK Health and Safety Executive warns that some types can miss faults and falsely indicate that a socket is safe; its advice concerns workplace electrical safety, but the limitation is relevant to anyone tempted to treat a tester as a definitive diagnosis: HSE guidance on electrical equipment and water.

Who should check the installation?
Use a qualified electrician for suspected wiring, earthing, or bathroom electrical faults, following the rules where you live. Whether the remedy involves grounding repairs, RCD/GFCI protection, an appliance repair, or other work depends on the actual fault and local requirements. OSHA’s material is US workplace guidance, Electrical Safety First’s bathroom advice is UK guidance, and neither substitutes for a local assessment.
