Keurig brewers do not all use the same cleaning steps, descaling solution, buttons, or schedule, so start by identifying your model and checking its guide.
First, find your Keurig model and guide
Look for the model name or number on the brewer’s label, then use Keurig’s model-specific support page or the use-and-care guide that matches it. Follow that guide for parts, cleaning steps, descaling method, and rinse cycles; do not assume instructions for a K-Classic or K-Mini Go apply to another brewer.
What does “clean” mean—and how is descaling different?
Routine cleaning removes coffee residue from removable parts and surfaces. Descaling addresses mineral deposits that can build up inside the brewer; Keurig says the amount depends on the minerals in your water and that buildup can affect performance. Needle cleaning is another separate task: it can help when grounds appear in the coffee or the brewer dispenses only part of a cup. A partial cup can also have other causes, so use the model guide’s troubleshooting steps rather than assuming the needle is the problem.
How to clean the removable parts and exterior
- Unplug and cool the brewer. Keurig’s cleaning tips say to unplug it and let it cool before cleaning. If a used pod is still in the brewer, wait until it has cooled before removing it.
- Wipe the exterior. Use a damp, soapy, non-abrasive cloth, following Keurig’s cleaning tips. Keep water away from the brewer’s electrical parts; do not immerse the machine.
- Wash removable parts according to your guide. On the K-Classic, Keurig says the drip tray may go on the dishwasher’s top rack, while the water reservoir and lid should be hand-washed and rinsed. Those instructions are specific to the K-Classic; check your own guide before putting any part in a dishwasher.
- Reassemble and rinse as directed. If your model’s instructions call for a water-only brew after cleaning, complete it before making coffee.
When should you clean the needle?
If you find grounds in the cup or get partial cups, a clogged needle may be the cause. Needle cleaning is not the same as descaling. Follow the exact instructions for your brewer: the K-Classic guide explains how to remove its pod holder assembly, clear the exit needle, and carefully clean the entrance-needle holes. It permits a carefully used straightened paper clip or similar tool. The needles are sharp; work carefully and do not force a tool into the brewer.

For the K-Classic, Keurig directs owners to run two water-only brews after cleaning the entrance needle. Use that count only for the K-Classic procedure; another model may specify a different rinse or cleaning process.
How to descale your Keurig
Descaling removes mineral deposits, and the product and sequence depend on the model. Use the solution, dwell time, cycle steps, and filter instructions in your own guide. If it says to remove a water filter, do so before starting. Complete the fresh-water rinse exactly as directed; leftover descaling solution should not be treated as a finished descale.

The K-Classic guide centers its procedure on Keurig Descaling Solution and calls for at least 12 brews using the largest cup size with fresh water only after the solution cycle. That is a K-Classic requirement, not a universal Keurig rinse count. Keurig’s descaling instructions give separate procedures for specified brewer families, including a white-vinegar method. Do not assume vinegar and branded descaling solution are interchangeable for every model.
How often should you descale your brewer?
There is no single interval established for every Keurig. Keurig’s K-Classic guide says to descale every 3–6 months. Its 2024 K-Mini Go guide says every three months or when that model’s Descale notification turns on. These are model-specific manufacturer schedules, not a quantified guarantee of improved performance. Check your own guide for its interval and any descale alert.

What if you use the brewer infrequently or store it?
Keurig’s cleaning tips say to remove a used pod once it has cooled and, if the brewer is not used daily, run 3–4 cleansing brews before the first serving. The same tips call for a full descale before and after storage longer than a month. Follow your own model’s procedure for a cleansing brew or descale, including its rinse requirements.
Keurig Rinse Pods are an optional routine-cleaning product, separate from descaling solution. The K-Mini Go guide lists weekly Rinse Pod use and says Water Filters should be replaced every two months; those schedules apply to that guide, not all Keurig models. Keurig’s cleaning tips describe a Rinse Pod as an alternative to a cleansing brew. Use a water filter only if your brewer accepts one, and follow its guide for replacement timing.

When to stop troubleshooting
Do not open the brewer or attempt repairs beyond the steps in its guide. Keurig’s K-Classic guide states: “Beyond these recommended cleaning and maintenance procedures, this brewer is not user serviceable.” It directs owners to Customer Service if partial-cup brewing continues after two descales. For other models, use the support route and escalation guidance in that model’s documentation.
