Start by identifying the exact Lippert leveling system installed in your RV; its controller, error messages, and recovery steps determine which troubleshooting advice applies. For the 4-point/3-valve Sprinter hydraulic system covered by Lippert’s owner’s manual, revision 11.12.24, the first checks are the ignition, parking brake, battery voltage, and the displayed error. These instructions and voltage limits are specific to that system—not universal Lippert specifications.
Identify your Lippert system before troubleshooting
Lippert publishes separate support materials for motorized standard hydraulic leveling, Power Gear electric leveling, and Power Gear hydraulic leveling. Its leveling systems buying guide also describes Level Up hydraulic systems. These families are not interchangeable: confirm the system and controller in your RV’s documentation, then use its matching owner’s manual and troubleshooting instructions.
The symptom guide below applies only to the 4-point/3-valve Sprinter hydraulic system in Lippert manual CCD-0001515, revision 11.12.24. If your coach has another system, use its manual rather than applying these procedures or specifications.
Quick checks for the 4-point/3-valve Sprinter hydraulic system
Before operating this documented system, Lippert specifies that the engine must be running and the parking brake engaged. Its automatic leveling mode requires 12.75 V DC; the system stops operating if voltage falls below 9.5 V DC. These are model-specific values, not general thresholds for every Lippert system.

| Symptom or display | What Lippert lists | Manual-supported next step |
|---|---|---|
| System will not turn on; indicator does not illuminate | Ignition is not in RUN, parking brake is not set, or controls timed out after four minutes. | Check ignition and parking brake. If the controls timed out, turn the ignition off and back on. |
| Touchpad turns off when a jack button is pushed | Low battery voltage. | Start the coach to charge the battery and check voltage against this system’s requirements. |
| Pump runs but jacks will not extend | Low or empty reservoir, an inoperative jack valve, or loss of signal between the controller and jack valves. | Check reservoir fluid as the manual directs. If fluid is adequate, signal loss, wiring, valve, or controller faults may need diagnosis and repair. |
| One or two jacks will not retract | Damaged or disconnected hose, an inoperative return valve, or loss of signal to the solenoid. | Inspect hose connections and have the specified signal path checked; repair the failed component as needed. |
| Jacks-down light stays on after retraction | Insufficient pressure or an inoperative retract pressure switch. | Check the connection. If the light remains on after the prescribed retract action, contact Lippert service. |
| “Excess Angle” | The coach is not on level ground or the zero point is incorrectly calibrated. | Move to level ground and recalibrate the zero point following the manual. |
| “Out of Stroke” | A jack does not have enough extension to complete leveling. | Check jack position and site conditions. Do not keep retrying auto-leveling where the jacks cannot reach. |
| “Low Voltage” | Voltage below 9.5 V DC during operation. | Start the engine and check battery voltage under load. The manual separately specifies 12.75 V DC for automatic operation. |
| “Function Aborted” | A touchpad button was pressed during auto-leveling. | Acknowledge the message and restart as directed by the manual. |
| “Unable to Finish Leveling” | Excessive movement inside the coach during auto-leveling. | Keep people still and avoid moving around until the leveling cycle finishes. |
| “Comm Error / Check Wiring” | A loose or faulty connection between the touchpad and controller. | Check connections. The manual says to replace the communication harness if needed. |
| “Retract Timeout” | The pressure switch did not sense retract pressure before pump timeout; a leaking hose or fitting is also listed. | Check for leaks and arrange service as appropriate. Follow the manual’s clearance instructions. |
Why Lippert leveling jacks may not extend or retract
Pump runs, but jacks do not extend
For the cited Sprinter hydraulic model, Lippert lists low reservoir fluid, an inoperative jack valve, and a lost signal between the controller and valves as possible causes. Check fluid according to the manual; if the level is correct, the problem may require testing the signal path and diagnosing wiring, valves, or the controller.
One or two jacks will not retract
Inspect for a damaged or disconnected hose. If the hoses appear sound, the manual also identifies a faulty return valve or a missing signal to the solenoid as possible causes. A persistent fault calls for system-specific electrical or hydraulic diagnosis, not trial-and-error parts replacement.
Jacks-down light remains on
Lippert identifies insufficient pressure or a faulty retract pressure switch. Check the connection, then follow the manual’s retract procedure. If the indicator stays on, contact Lippert service rather than assuming the jacks are fully retracted.

What to do about auto-level errors
“Excess Angle”
The site may be too uneven, or the system’s zero point may be set incorrectly. Try a more level location; recalibrate the zero point only as described in the matching manual.
“Out of Stroke”
This message means a jack lacks enough extension to finish leveling. Check the jack disposition and whether the site exceeds the system’s reach; repeated attempts will not give a too-short jack additional travel.
“Low Voltage”
For this Sprinter system, the message indicates voltage below 9.5 V DC during operation. Start the engine and check the battery under load. The manual’s 12.75 V DC figure is the requirement for automatic leveling, not the low-voltage stop threshold.

“Function Aborted” or “Unable to Finish Leveling”
“Function Aborted” means a touchpad button was pressed during the auto-level cycle; acknowledge it and restart according to the manual. “Unable to Finish Leveling” is associated with excessive movement inside the coach, so keep occupants still while the system works.
“Comm Error / Check Wiring” or “Retract Timeout”
For a communication error, check the touchpad-to-controller connections; Lippert says the communication harness may need replacement. A retract timeout means the pressure switch did not detect retract pressure before the pump timed out, and the manual also lists a leaking hose or fitting. Check for leaks and seek appropriate service.

A manual override is not a generic fix for Lippert systems. On the documented 4-point/3-valve Sprinter hydraulic model, Lippert’s drill-assisted retraction procedure involves opening three cartridge valves with a 5/32-inch hex key, disconnecting or shielding motor power cables, removing the motor coupler cap, unplugging the directional-valve harness, and using a 1/2-inch socket on the motor coupler with a drill running counterclockwise to retract all jacks. The procedure then directs the operator to close the overrides counterclockwise and restore the cap and harness. Follow the complete manual procedure, including its safety directions; do not improvise this sequence on another model.

Lippert warns not to overtighten the override screws because doing so can damage the valves. Its manual also prohibits using the leveling system to support the coach for work such as a tire change or service underneath it. Use suitable independent support and trained service for under-coach work; leveling jacks are not a substitute.
Hydraulic fluid and cold-weather checks
For the 4-point/3-valve Sprinter system only, Lippert recommends ATF with Dexron III or Mercon 5, or a blend; the manual also says Type “A” ATF is utilized and approved. Check the exact manual and vehicle compatibility before adding fluid; do not assume this recommendation applies to another Lippert unit.
The same manual warns that operation at or below 40°F (4°C) may slow jack extension or retraction, or leave jacks incompletely retracted. After auto-retract in those conditions, visually confirm that every jack is fully retracted.

Lippert’s RV leveling parts catalog includes repair components such as hydraulic power-unit solenoids and fittings, but a symptom alone does not establish which part fits or has failed. Confirm diagnosis and fitment for the coach’s exact system before replacing components.
