For routine cleaning, wipe a whiteboard gently with a clean, soft microfiber cloth, dry or lightly dampened with water. Let it dry fully before writing again. For stubborn marks, use only a cleaner approved for that board’s surface: manufacturers differ on whether isopropyl alcohol is safe, and the wrong product can damage a coating.
Clean a whiteboard in five steps
- Remove loose residue. Use a clean, soft cloth or the board’s clean, dry-erase eraser. Rough or dirty materials and excessive pressure can scratch or wear some surfaces; Magnetic Concepts cautions against abrasive materials: Magnetic Concepts care guidance.
- Wipe routine marks with water. Lightly dampen a microfiber cloth and wipe gently. Bi-Office recommends water for general cleaning and microfiber for intensive wet cleaning: Bi-Office cleaning guidance.
- Use an approved cleaner for marks that remain. Check the care instructions for the board’s make and model before applying a whiteboard cleaner. Its compatibility depends on the surface.
- Use alcohol only if the board maker permits it. Follow that maker’s specified solution and directions; do not assume a recommendation for one product applies to another.
- Wipe as directed and let the surface dry completely. Wait until it is dry before writing again.
Why there is no universal alcohol rule
Whiteboard materials and coatings differ, so product-specific care instructions take precedence over general cleaning advice. Think Board recommends 70% isopropyl alcohol for occasional deep cleaning of its product (Think Board care guidance), while SMART lists isopropyl alcohol for specific board surfaces (SMART kapp cleaning instructions). By contrast, Magnatag warns that alcohol could permanently damage its MagnaLux surface (Magnatag care guidance).
Bi-Office describes a mixture of 30% isopropyl alcohol and 70% water as an option in its guidance. That is not a general-purpose recipe: use it only if the instructions for your particular board allow it.
Take extra care with interactive boards
Interactive equipment may have frames, sensors, screens, or openings that should not be exposed to excess liquid. For SMART kapp, apply a small amount of cleaner to a clean cloth rather than spraying the board, and keep cleaner out of frame corners, as its cleaning instructions specify. Older SMART Board 600/D600 instructions also describe applying cleaner to a cloth and using isopropyl alcohol for stubborn stains on those models (SMART Board 600/D600 guidance). Do not apply directions for one model to every interactive display.

What to avoid, and what to expect from old stains
- Abrasives and rough materials: They can scratch or degrade some writing surfaces.
- Unapproved solvents or household cleaners: Magnetic Concepts warns against solvents such as acetone, and Magnatag advises against alcohol and general household or industrial cleaners on its MagnaLux surface. Check the instructions for your own board.
- Direct spraying on interactive equipment: Follow the device maker’s directions; for SMART kapp, cleaner belongs on a cloth, not directly on the board.
Some ink may remain permanently if it has been left on the board for a long time. Whiteboard.com notes that removal depends on the surface type, so no cleaner can be guaranteed to restore every stained board (Whiteboard.com cleaning FAQ).

What you need
- A clean, soft microfiber or lint-free cloth for routine wiping.
- Water for ordinary marks.
- An optional whiteboard cleaner, only if it is compatible with your board’s surface.
