Jade plants (Crassula ovata) can be propagated from stem cuttings, whole leaves, or an existing offset. Stem and leaf cuttings are the most practical options for most plants: let the cut surface dry for a few days, then root the material in fairly dry, well-drained medium. Spring and summer are favorable, though propagation is possible year-round.
Which jade propagation method should you choose?

Extension sources support stem and leaf cuttings as established methods, but do not provide head-to-head success rates or comparative rooting times. Choose based on the material available and the size of starter plant you want.
How to propagate jade from a stem cutting
- Choose a healthy shoot. General houseplant guidance from University of Maine Cooperative Extension describes stem-tip cuttings 3–5 inches long, cut just below a leaf and with three or four leaves. These are broad houseplant recommendations, not a proven jade-specific optimum. University of Maine Cooperative Extension
- Remove lower leaves. Strip leaves from the part of the stem that will sit in the rooting medium.
- Let the cut end dry. Leave the cutting out for a few days so the cut surface can heal. This helps reduce the risk of rot, according to Wisconsin Extension.
- Set it in medium. Insert the cut end into fairly dry, well-drained soil. A cactus or succulent mix is one suitable type of medium; the Royal Horticultural Society’s jade guidance recommends cactus compost for potted jade.
Wisconsin Extension notes that jade cuttings can also root out of soil, but its guidance does not establish that water rooting is faster, safer, or more successful than soil.
How to propagate jade from a leaf
- Remove one healthy leaf cleanly at its base. A whole leaf is the starting material; avoid leaving it torn or badly damaged.
- Let the base dry for a few days. As with a stem cutting, allowing the wound to heal can reduce rot risk.
- Place the leaf base-first in rooting medium, or lay it on the soil. Maine Extension describes placing whole-leaf cuttings base-first, where roots and shoots eventually form at the base. Washington State University Extension says a jade leaf gently broken off and left atop soil can produce roots and new leaves: WSU Extension’s houseplant propagation guidance.
- Use fairly dry, well-drained medium. Avoid keeping the rooting medium wet while the leaf is establishing.
A leaf cutting begins as a small plantlet, so it takes time to grow into a mature jade. An Ask Extension response notes this slow progression but gives no specific timeline.

When and how to use an offset
An offset is a distinct small growth attached to the parent plant. The RHS lists offsets as a propagation option for Crassula ovata and identifies spring as a propagation period. Use this method only if your jade already has a clearly separate offset; not every plant will have one.
The available jade-specific guidance does not give a detailed offset-separation procedure. Do not pull or cut blindly into the parent plant. If the offset is not clearly separable without risking damage, use a stem or leaf cutting instead.

When to propagate and how to reduce rot risk
- Timing: Wisconsin Extension says jade cuttings root most easily in summer and can be propagated any time of year. The RHS lists spring. Spring or summer is a sensible favorable window, but indoor propagation is not limited to those seasons.
- Dry the wound: Let cut material dry for a few days before planting, as Wisconsin Extension advises, so the surface heals.
- Choose the medium carefully: Use fairly dry, well-drained soil for cuttings; cactus compost is an option for jade.
- Keep expectations realistic: The cited sources do not establish a fixed rooting time, a success percentage, or a fastest method. Water-rooting claims should not be treated as a proven improvement over soil.
What you need
You can propagate from your existing jade without buying a special product. Optional supplies are clean, sharp scissors or a knife, a small container with drainage, and a well-draining succulent or cactus medium. Maine Extension lists a sharp knife or scissors, rooting medium, and a container as possible cutting supplies.
