You can bring Christmas scents into your home with evergreen, citrus, spices, seasonal baking and fragrance products. No method here is shown to scent a home continuously for a month: plan to refresh or rotate your choices, and use them where people gather. Start with one source at a time if anyone at home is sensitive to fragrance.
13 ways to bring Christmas scents into your home
1. Set up a fresh Christmas tree
A live conifer provides a natural evergreen aroma. Its scent comes from volatile organic compounds, including monoterpenes. In a 2023 study, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) measured emissions from one Douglas fir in a sealed chamber for 17 days. It found low amounts of emitted compounds and noted that some can react with ozone to form irritants that may concern sensitive people. That chamber study does not predict the scent or effects of every tree in every home. NIST’s study and summary also cite nearly 30 million live Christmas trees bought by Americans each holiday season; that is not a current-year sales count.
A tree needs care as well as space: the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA) advises watering it daily, keeping it at least three feet from heat sources, and removing it after Christmas or when it is dry. USFA holiday fire-safety guidance gives the full placement advice.
2. Hang a fresh wreath or garland
Evergreen wreaths and garlands can bring a localized natural scent to an entryway or gathering area. NIST’s study tested one Douglas fir, not wreaths or garlands, so it does not establish how long these decorations stay fragrant. Refresh or replace them when their aroma fades, following the care instructions that come with the greenery.

3. Simmer citrus and spices on the stove
Add orange slices or peel, cinnamon sticks and cloves to a pot of water, then warm it gently to release their aroma. Keep the pot attended, check the liquid regularly and add water as needed; do not leave a burner on as a set-and-forget fragrance source. Turn off the heat when you leave the kitchen.
4. Make dried citrus-and-spice potpourri
Combine dried citrus with whole spices such as cinnamon and cloves in a bowl for a fragrance accent that does not need heat. The scent will vary with the ingredients and room; refresh them when you no longer notice the aroma. The cited sources do not establish a standard replacement schedule or duration.

5. Try a holiday essential-oil blend
If you enjoy essential oils, use a diffuser according to its manufacturer’s directions. One vendor’s holiday blend combines wild orange, cinnamon, nutmeg, clove, Siberian fir and Douglas fir. Its product sheet suggests one to two drops in homemade potpourri; that is the vendor’s recommendation, not independent evidence of room coverage or scent duration. Read the dōTERRA Holiday Joy product information sheet. Choose scents by preference, and do not treat fragrance as an air purifier or health treatment.
6. Light a seasonal candle—or choose flameless
A scented candle can add fragrance while someone is in the room. USFA advises keeping lit candles at least 12 inches from anything that can burn and using stable holders. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) says to keep burning candles within sight and extinguish them before leaving the room or going to bed. Battery-operated flameless candles are an option where you want candlelight without an open flame. CPSC holiday decorating safety guidance.

- Kitchen Spice: An uplifting combination of your favorite spices — the scents of ginger, cardamom, cinnamon, and clove — with a hint of sweet orange notes, like a happy, busy kitchen bustling with from-scratch baking and friendly conversation.

- Consistent, long-lasting fragrance from first to last burn
- Long burning candle with up to 150 hours of room-filling fragrance

7. Bake something seasonal
Cookies, spiced bread or other holiday baking can fill the kitchen with a welcoming aroma while the food is in the oven and cooling. Treat it as an occasional scent, not a continuous fragrance source, and follow ordinary kitchen safety practices.
8. Set out a small bowl of whole spices
A bowl of cinnamon sticks, cloves or star anise makes a simple, unheated scent accent. Its aroma may be subtle and will vary with the spices and the room; it is not a reliable way to fragrance a whole home.

9. Refresh citrus peel and spices when needed
For a bowl or potpourri, replace citrus peel and spices when their aroma fades. There is no established universal schedule, so let the scent—not a calendar—guide you. Discard ingredients that show signs of spoilage.
10. Put the scent where you gather
Place a chosen scent source near the living room, dining area or other space where people spend time. This is a practical placement choice, not a guarantee that the fragrance will reach every room.

11. Layer evergreen with citrus and spice
For a seasonal combination, pair the fresh, woody note of greenery with citrus and familiar spices such as cinnamon or clove. This is a preference-led suggestion based on those ingredients, not a tested formula. Keep the combination restrained if several scents together feel overwhelming.
12. Use fewer sources in sensitive spaces
Fragrance preferences and sensitivities differ. Try one source at a time in a small or fragrance-sensitive space. If someone finds the scent irritating, stop using it and ventilate the room. NIST’s chamber findings support acknowledging possible sensitivity, not assuming the same response for everyone.
13. Rotate methods through the month
Instead of expecting one source to last, alternate among greenery, food-based aromas and a chosen fragrance product. A simmer pot needs attention while it is warming; baking is occasional; and bowls of dried ingredients or purchased fragrance need refreshing according to their condition or product directions. Choose a routine that fits the time and care you want to give it.
