Museum VONK in Eindhoven is a useful case study in bio-based construction: its design combines a timber roof structure, prefabricated lime-hemp exterior elements, and interior walls reused from an earlier pavilion. The available project information does not establish that the building was cheaper than conventional construction, so “affordable” is best understood as the framing of a Dezeen headline—not a demonstrated cost result.
What is Museum VONK?
Museum VONK is part of Museumpark VONK in Eindhoven, Netherlands. Studio Marco Vermeulen lists the building as realised in 2026 and names Stichting Eindhoven Museum as its client. The project extends and transforms the preHistorisch Dorp into a museum park linking exhibitions, making activities, and the surrounding landscape. Studio Marco Vermeulen’s project description sets out the building and its design.
The museum’s programme includes a timeline of collection objects, an introductory exhibition about the Eindhoven region, and a workshop where visitors make objects known as “vonken.” The studio says workshop creations are taken through large façade doors into the park every few months.
How does the building use bio-based and reused materials?
Lime-hemp exterior elements
The architect describes the exterior wall system as prefabricated lime-hemp elements finished with pigmented lime plaster. The coloured layers refer to the local soil profile. Although the Dezeen headline and excerpt use “hempcrete,” “lime-hemp” is the architect’s description of the façade system; the available sources do not identify a retail product used in the building.

Reused CLT interior walls
Interior walls use cross-laminated timber (CLT) panels recovered from Biobasecamp, a modular timber pavilion designed by the same studio for Dutch Design Week 2019. Reusing those panels gives an existing building component a second use; the project account does not quantify the resulting material savings or environmental impact.
Timber roof structure
The roof garden is carried by a timber structure. Rotated, twisted roof trusses create a doubly curved roof and varying interior heights. According to the architect, this geometry allows taller spaces for the introductory exhibition and making workshop, alongside lower, more intimate areas for the restaurant and offices.

How do the roof and public spaces connect to the park?
The planted roof is accessible to visitors and uses native plants and shrubs, with views over Genneper Parks and Eindhoven. The architect also says the lime-hemp façade incorporates nesting provisions for birds and bats. Architectuurcentrum Eindhoven independently describes the timber structure, pigmented lime-hemp façade, accessible planted roof, reused interior walls, and ecological features, including nesting provisions for birds and insects. The visitor route begins on the park side, passes the introductory exhibition and collection timeline, and reaches the interactive workshop, which opens toward the park and preHistorisch Dorp. The restaurant connects to a terrace, with a conference room above the kitchen. The architect describes a route from the terrace over the curved planted roof, past a circular solar garden with photovoltaic panels, and toward the exit through the museum shop. The studio says the restaurant, terrace, and roof are freely accessible.

Does Museum VONK prove bio-based construction is affordable?
No cost figure or comparison with a conventional building is provided in the available project accounts. They also do not report independently measured embodied carbon, operational performance, or other comparative building-performance results. The project illustrates a particular material and design approach; by itself, it does not show that bio-based construction costs less or performs better than conventional construction.
The phrase “a testing ground for affordable bio-based construction” appears as a headline on a page identifying Dezeen as publisher, posted 4 October 2026. Its brief excerpt does not supply cost evidence. Dezeen’s syndicated excerpt supports the headline wording, not a conclusion about the project’s actual affordability.

To make a meaningful affordability comparison, a published assessment would need to define the alternatives and account for comparable project scope, material quantities and origins, construction methods, maintenance, and operational requirements. Those details are not established in the cited project descriptions.
