After transplanting, keep the shallow-rooted plants weed-free and evenly watered; harvest when tops fall and dry, then cure the bulbs until their skins are papery.
1. Choose an onion variety for your day length
Onions form bulbs in response to day length, and varieties are adapted to different day-length classes. University of Iowa guidance relayed in a 2024 University of Maryland Extension response describes short-day onions as beginning to bulb at about 11–12 hours of daylight, intermediate-day onions at 12–14 hours, and long-day onions at 14 or more hours. These are general classes, not a replacement for the seed packet’s regional recommendations. Check that the variety is suited to your location before buying seed; seed gives you access to specific cultivars that may not be available as sets. Maryland Extension’s explanation of onion day-length classes and Iowa State’s onion guide offer further context.
2. Decide whether to start indoors or sow outdoors
Starting indoors gives seedlings time to grow before the local outdoor planting window, but it requires a suitable place with bright light and steady moisture. Direct sowing avoids indoor seedling care, though the right timing depends on your climate and the variety. Extension sources do not identify one method as best for every region. Use local extension guidance or the seed supplier’s regional advice to choose.
| Method | What to consider |
|---|---|
| Start indoors | Plan for the recommended lead time before your local planting window, and make sure you can provide bright light and even moisture. |
| Direct sow outdoors | Follow local guidance for when soil and weather are appropriate; keep the seedbed moist while seeds germinate. |
3. Work backward from your local planting window
Indoor onions need a long lead time. Recommendations differ by region: University of Maryland Extension advises sowing about eight weeks before planting; Iowa State recommends roughly 8–10 weeks; and University of Minnesota and Nebraska Extension give about 10–12 weeks. These are regional recommendations, not a single universal calendar. Find your area’s planting window first, then count back using the guidance that applies to your location. Iowa State’s early-April-to-early-May planting window, for example, is for Iowa and should not be applied automatically elsewhere. Maryland Extension’s home-garden guide, Minnesota Extension’s onion guide, and Nebraska Extension’s overview provide regional guidance.

4. Sow seeds shallowly and keep the medium moist
Use a well-drained seed-starting medium for indoor sowing, and follow the depth on the packet or locally relevant extension advice. Published recommendations differ: Maryland and Minnesota give a depth of ¼–½ inch, while Iowa State recommends ½–¾ inch for direct sowing. Keep the medium or outdoor seedbed from drying while seeds germinate; do not let it become waterlogged.
5. Give seedlings bright light
Onion seedlings need bright light and moderate to cool growing conditions. A sunny south-facing window may provide enough light; if it does not, supplemental lighting can help. Nebraska Extension recommends keeping supplemental fixtures near seedlings for 12–14 hours daily. That is a regional extension recommendation, not a requirement to buy a particular kind of light. Watch the seedlings: if they stretch toward a window or grow weak and spindly, improve their access to light.

- Power drill cordless with 1/2" single sleeve ratcheting chuck provides tight bit gripping strength, making bit changes faster and more secure
6. Harden seedlings before planting out
Indoor-grown seedlings need a gradual transition to outdoor conditions. Over several days, expose them to the outdoors for increasing periods before transplanting. Use your local planting window and weather guidance to determine when to begin; a date recommended for one state is not universal. Iowa State’s early-April-to-early-May planting guidance applies to Iowa, while Minnesota and Nebraska provide their own regional advice.
7. Space plants for the bulbs you want
Follow the variety’s instructions and allow for your preferred bulb size. Maryland Extension recommends 4 inches between plants for moderate-size bulbs and 8 inches for large bulbs. Minnesota Extension advises thinning direct-sown seedlings to 3–4 inches. These are regional recommendations; check local guidance and the packet rather than treating one spacing as universal.

8. Keep soil evenly moist and control weeds
Onions have shallow roots and compete poorly with weeds. Water consistently so the soil stays evenly moist, while avoiding overwatering. Maryland Extension notes that bulb size is directly proportional to the amount of water applied during the growing season; in practical terms, avoid letting plants dry out, but do not assume that more water is always better. Mulch can help conserve soil moisture and suppress weeds. Weed carefully so you do not damage shallow roots. Utah State University Extension’s onion guide discusses watering and mulch.
9. Feed carefully and watch for problems
Onions have high nutrient needs, but fertilizer should match your soil and local recommendations. Maryland Extension describes fertilizing before planting and side-dressing after bulb enlargement begins. Washington State University Extension warns that excess nitrogen can delay maturity, produce soft bulbs or large necks, and reduce storage life. A soil test and locally appropriate fertilizer directions are safer starting points than a universal dose.

Cold exposure and other stress can contribute to bolting, when a plant sends up a flower stalk. A mismatch between variety and day length or planting too late can also leave plants with small bulbs or leafy growth that does not produce useful bulbs. Choosing a suitable variety and following local timing guidance can reduce these risks, but cannot guarantee that bolting will never occur.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.10. Harvest when tops fall, then cure the bulbs
For dry bulb onions, watch the tops: Minnesota Extension advises harvesting when about half have fallen over and are dry. Handle bulbs gently. Cure them according to local guidance and your storage plans; Utah State University Extension describes cured onions as having papery skins and dry roots. Those signs indicate that curing has progressed, rather than simply a fresh bulb being ready to lift.

How much sun do onions need?
University of Maryland Extension’s home-garden guidance calls for at least 6 hours of direct sun daily, with 8–10 hours preferred. The same source says green onions can grow with 5 hours; that guidance is for green onions, not a promise of large dry bulbs.
How long do onions take to mature?
University of Maryland Extension gives 85–120 days to maturity for mature bulbs. That range belongs to its Maryland guidance; the actual growing period depends on variety, local conditions, and when the crop is planted.
