For construction and workshop checks, the ThermoWorks IR-GUN-S is the most adaptable documented option here: its manufacturer lists adjustable emissivity and a broad measurement range. For food-surface checks, the fixed-emissivity ThermoWorks IRFS is purpose-built. The Fluke 62 MAX is a professional comparison option with a documented 10:1 optical resolution. A fourth model, Klein Tools IR10, is not sufficiently documented in the available official specifications to recommend on equal footing. These are manufacturer specifications and product-fit assessments, not results from independent comparative testing.
Which infrared thermometer fits the job?
| Model | Best fit | Documented specifications | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| ThermoWorks IR-GUN-S | General-purpose surface checks, including construction, HVAC, cooking surfaces, and workshop use | Manufacturer lists a -76°F to 1022°F range, 12:1 distance-to-spot ratio, adjustable emissivity from 0.1 to 1.0, and one-second response. ThermoWorks product specifications. | Accuracy varies by temperature band; consult the specification for the temperature you expect to measure. |
| ThermoWorks IRFS | Food-surface checks where a preset emissivity is suitable | Manufacturer lists a -67°F to 536°F range, 12:1 optics, and fixed emissivity of 0.97. ThermoWorks product specifications. | Fixed emissivity makes it less adaptable across varied materials. It measures surface temperature, not the food’s internal temperature. |
| Fluke 62 MAX | Professional-tool comparison for non-contact surface readings | Fluke’s 2025 product guide lists adjustable emissivity from 0.10 to 1.00 and 10:1 optical resolution calculated at 90% energy. It also provides model-specific accuracy and range details. Fluke 62 MAX product guide. | Use the guide’s accuracy specification for the relevant temperature range. Do not confuse the 62 MAX with the 62 MAX+ or 64 MAX. |
| Klein Tools IR10 | Possible candidate if official specifications meet your requirements | Exact current official range, accuracy, optics, emissivity, calibration documentation, warranty, and price: not stated in a verified primary source. | A secondary comparison identifies it as a dual-laser model, but that claim and the specifications needed for comparison have not been verified against current official documentation. No firm recommendation is warranted. |
ThermoWorks’ February 2024 selection chart also lists the IRK-2 and IRT-2 as alternatives with 12:1 optics. The chart gives best-accuracy figures of ±1.8°F for the IRK-2 and ±1.1°F for the IRT-2, while cautioning that accuracy varies across the full range. These are manufacturer figures, not comparative test measurements. ThermoWorks infrared thermometer buying guide and selection chart.
What an infrared thermometer measures
An infrared thermometer senses thermal radiation from a surface without touching it. It reports an average across the area viewed by its sensor; the visible laser, when present, is an aiming aid rather than the temperature sensor. ThermoWorks explains that this measured spot grows as the instrument moves farther from the target. ThermoWorks’ explanation of infrared measurement.
Match the optics to the target
The distance-to-spot ratio describes how the measured spot changes with distance. Under ThermoWorks’ example, a 12:1 instrument measures a spot about 1 inch in diameter from 12 inches away. If the target is smaller than the instrument’s spot, surrounding surfaces contribute to the reading. Choose a ratio and working distance that keep the spot within the area you intend to measure; a higher ratio can help with small targets viewed from farther away, but does not remove the need to account for target shape and size.

- Carpenter Pencils with Sharpener: The sharpener is screwed into the top of the work pencil, which won't get lost either. Built-in pencil sharpener that keep the lead with pointed and smooth to Improves line of sight in fine work
- Stronger Solid Lead: This work pencil is matched with a 2.8 mm thick lead , which is much thicker and stronger during the drawing process of construction work, it will not break or damage easily
- Marks on Various Surfaces: 3 colors solid construction pencil can marks on various surfaces, such as metal, plastic, wood, paper etc. Ideals for woodworkers, contractors, craftsmen, builders, merchants and masons
Set emissivity for the material
Emissivity describes how effectively a surface emits thermal radiation. If the instrument’s emissivity assumption does not suit the material, the reading can be inaccurate. An adjustable control, such as those listed for the IR-GUN-S and Fluke 62 MAX, offers flexibility across materials. The IRFS’s fixed 0.97 setting is intended for its food-surface use, rather than for adapting across a range of construction materials. Consult the thermometer’s guidance for the surface being measured; the cited product specifications do not establish one setting that is right for every material.
Read accuracy at the temperature you need
A single headline accuracy figure is not enough if accuracy changes across the instrument’s range. ThermoWorks explicitly notes that infrared accuracy specifications typically vary by temperature band. Check the model’s full accuracy table at the temperatures relevant to the job rather than treating a best-case figure as universal. For the Fluke 62 MAX, use its model-specific 2025 product guide for the applicable range and accuracy details.

- Power drill cordless with 1/2" single sleeve ratcheting chuck provides tight bit gripping strength, making bit changes faster and more secure
Choose by task, not by the longest range
Construction, HVAC, and workshop checks
The IR-GUN-S is the strongest documented fit among these four for varied surface checks because its listed emissivity adjustment can accommodate more than one type of material. Before relying on any reading, make sure the target fills the measured spot at your working distance and that the selected emissivity suits the surface. The listed temperature range alone does not guarantee useful accuracy at every point in that range.
Food-surface checks
The IRFS is a focused option when you need a non-contact reading of a food surface and its fixed emissivity is appropriate. Infrared readings do not tell you the internal temperature of food. Use an appropriate contact-probe thermometer when internal temperature is the question; ThermoWorks describes the IRFS as a surface-check instrument. ThermoWorks IRFS product information.

Professional comparison
The Fluke 62 MAX has documented adjustable emissivity and an optical-resolution figure in Fluke’s 2025 guide, making it a defined option to compare against the ThermoWorks models. Confirm the exact model and read its range-specific accuracy requirements before selecting it; the 62 MAX, 62 MAX+, and 64 MAX are distinct models.
