Measure your oven opening and decide how you prepare pizza before choosing a peel. A wide wooden peel can be useful for building and launching a pie but may not fit a countertop oven; a thin metal edge helps retrieve dough prepared on a counter; and a small turning peel is for rotating pizza in the oven, not a universal launch tool.
The available published test results support four named picks, not a defensible seven-product ranking. Food Network reported testing 10 peels in an article published May 15, 2024. Its findings below are that publisher’s observations, not new tests or confirmation of current availability.
What the published test can—and cannot—recommend
Food Network’s review reports a test of 10 pizza peels using 12-inch pizzas. The testers dusted peels with flour, tried launches into an indoor pizza oven (or a full-size oven when a peel would not fit), rotated pizzas, removed cooked pies, and assessed ease of use, comfort, and cleaning. The review names four category picks. Its page title refers to 2026, but the listed publication date is May 15, 2024, so those are dated test observations rather than current independent verification.
A separate PizzaOvenGuide page describes testing wood, metal, and perforated models with 65% hydration dough fermented for 48 hours, launching more than 40 pies, and measuring blade thickness and flex. Those are that page’s own claims; the available evidence does not independently establish its rankings or provide three further verified winners. A seven-item ranking would therefore overstate what has been established.

Choose the peel for the oven and the job
Start with the oven opening and pizza diameter
Check the oven’s usable opening, not just the cooking surface. A peel must pass through the opening at the angle you can realistically use, and its blade must suit the pizza diameter. Food Network’s test illustrates the issue: its 16-inch-wide Baker’s Board did not fit the reviewer’s preferred at-home oven, while the 12-inch Ooni perforated peel worked in countertop and larger ovens and grills. Those are observations about those tested products and setups, not a guarantee that either will fit every oven.
Choose wood or metal around your workflow
In Food Network’s test, wooden peels had a thicker lip that suited stretching and topping pizza directly on the peel. The thinner edges of metal models made it easier to slide under raw pizza prepared on a counter or board. These are the reviewer’s reported comparisons; dough, surface, and individual model can affect handling.

If you top directly on the peel, a stable, roomy surface may matter most. If you assemble the pie elsewhere, a thin edge can make transfer easier. Neither material is a universal winner.
Understand what perforations do
Perforations are intended to let loose flour fall away before the pizza enters the oven. Gi.Metal explains its design this way: “The perforated peel is designed to remove the excess flour before sliding the pizza into the oven.” That is a manufacturer explanation, not an independent performance result. Food Network also reported flour falling through the holes on its tested Ooni peel.

Keep turning tools separate from launch peels
A small turning peel is useful when the oven requires rotating a pie during cooking or retrieving a smaller cooked pizza. Gi.Metal likewise describes small peels as tools for turning, checking, and removing pizza. Head size and long handle reach make this a different job from carrying a raw, topped pizza into the oven.

Reduce sticking and care for the peel
- Flour before loading: Food Network recommends flouring the peel to limit sticking. Use enough to help the dough move, while avoiding unnecessary excess.
- Keep the transfer deliberate: The review’s metal-edge observations favor preparing raw dough on a counter or board and sliding the peel underneath; wood’s thicker lip was better suited in that test to shaping and topping on the peel.
- Clean wood by hand: Food Network advises scraping residue, wiping with a dry or lightly damp cloth, and air-drying. Do not submerge a wooden peel.
- Keep wood out of prolonged heat: Food Network cautions that wood can burn if left in a hot oven or over a grill too long.
What to verify before buying
- Measure the oven opening and compare it with the peel’s blade dimensions and overall length.
- Match the blade width to the pizza size and intended task: launching, retrieving, turning, or more than one of these.
- Check handle reach and maneuverability, especially if you use an outdoor oven.
- Confirm the exact model and current specifications, availability, and price. The published review is dated May 15, 2024; it does not establish today’s prices or stock.
