Choose its place by weighing its condition, size, weight, and visual effect against the room and how you want to use it. For many durable quilts, a bed is the simplest display; a sturdy quilt can also be hung with proper support.
Choose a placement that suits the quilt
Quilts are layered textiles made as bedcovers or hangings, and they can be functional as well as decorative. Historical quilts may also hold personal or commemorative meaning. The Metropolitan Museum of Art discusses these varied roles, while the Rhode Island School of Design describes quilts as bedcovers or hangings made from layered textile components.

Size and pattern scale affect how each placement reads: a bed reveals a large expanse, while a wall can turn the textile into a focal point. Neither placement is right for every quilt. A fragile heirloom may be better stored safely or displayed only with suitable support and guidance.
How to style a quilt on a bed
Let the quilt do the visual work. As a design approach—not a universal matching rule—use one quilt as the room’s main pattern and keep nearby bedding relatively calm. Alternatively, pick one or two colors from the quilt and echo them in pillows or nearby decor. A folded quilt at the foot of the bed is a quick way to add color and texture without changing the furniture.

For everyday use, check that the quilt can tolerate the contact and handling it will receive. A meaningful or delicate quilt may be better treated as an occasional display rather than the bedcover used every night. Reduce prolonged exposure to direct sunlight and avoid letting a valued textile collect avoidable dirt or wear.
How to hang a quilt on the wall
- Assess its condition and weight. For a fragile, antique, or especially valuable quilt, consult a textile conservator before displaying it. A wall display puts sustained load on the textile.
- Use a sewn sleeve. A sleeve along the quilt’s top edge spreads the weight across its width. Do not drive nails or pins through the quilt itself.
- Choose the location carefully. The San Jose Museum of Quilts & Textiles advises placing the quilt’s center around eye level and keeping it away from kitchens and heating or air-conditioning vents.
- Limit exposure. Keep it out of direct light where possible and consider rotating it rather than leaving a valued textile on display indefinitely. The International Quilt Museum limits how long quilts in its own collection are displayed; that is museum practice, not a prescribed household schedule.
Protect the quilt while caring for it
Washing depends on the textile
Do not assume every quilt can go in a washing machine. The San Jose Museum notes that modern quilts made with colorfast materials may tolerate laundering, but the International Quilt Museum warns that washing can cause dye bleeding and mechanical damage. Follow the maker’s care instructions when available. If the quilt’s age, dyes, or construction are uncertain—or it is a fragile heirloom—ask a textile conservator before washing.

Store it in a stable place
Choose a clean, cool, dry area with relatively stable conditions in the lived-in part of the home, not an attic or damp basement. Store a quilt flat if practical. If you need to fold it, cushion the folds with acid-free tissue or washed cotton muslin and refold it periodically. Avoid direct contact with ordinary cardboard and wood. These precautions reduce risks from unsuitable materials and changing environmental conditions.
