Choose a yaupon holly (Ilex vomitoria) cultivar that fits your space and local climate, then plant it with the top of the root ball slightly above the surrounding soil. Yaupon tolerates a wide range of light and soil conditions, but more sun generally encourages a denser canopy and more fruit. If you want berries, you need a female plant and a male yaupon nearby. Allow room for root suckers, and do not plant yaupon in the defensible space closest to a home: North Carolina State Extension rates it as highly flammable.
Choose a site with room for the plant and its suckers
Yaupon holly is an evergreen shrub or small tree native to the eastern United States and Mexico, according to North Carolina State University Extension. Its small leaves are not prickly, and it tolerates pruning, so it can serve as a screen, hedge, barrier, specimen, or large-container plant. It can also send up root suckers and form a thicket. Avoid a spot where spreading shoots would be difficult to manage, and take care when disturbing soil beneath an established plant.
Light and soil tolerance are broad, but not identical in every local setting or cultivar. North Carolina Extension reports tolerance from full sun to deep shade, with more sun producing a thicker canopy and more fruit. Virginia Cooperative Extension lists partial shade to full sun and wet, moist, or dry conditions, and sandy, loamy, or clay soils. Its cited soil pH range is 3.7–6.8. The University of Florida IFAS Extension also reports tolerance of drought, salt, and soils with pH in the 7s. These are source-specific observations, not a guarantee that every cultivar will perform equally across all conditions.
For a fuller canopy or fruit, favor a sunnier location if it suits the site. For climate suitability, sources differ: Virginia Cooperative Extension lists USDA zones 7–10, while UF/IFAS lists zones 7a–9b. Confirm the suitability of the specific cultivar with a local Extension office or nursery, particularly near the edge of those reported ranges.
#1 Best Overall
- Dwarf, evergreen shrub with tight branches that create a spreading mound excellent for low hedges, borders, or around foundations. Tiny foliage on twiggy branches that takes well to shearing. A tough plant that tolerates a range of soils conditions and can withstand drought or flooding.
- This evergreen needs a regular water schedule to ensure the growth of a mature root system. The first year of growth requires watering weekly. After the mature root system is established, watering is needed occasionally, except during a drought, watering is needed regularly. Once mature, shearing is recommended to maintain desired shape.

- Growing well in sun or light shade in soils from dry to wet, Schilling's dwarf holly withstands drought when established and is highly salt-tolerant, making it ideally suited to seaside plantings. It is a selection of the native yaupon holly, which grows naturally without irrigation on the dunes along the Atlantic Ocean. Growth rate is slow to moderate.
- This dwarf evergreen shrubÕs foliage has small, shiny green leaves that provide excellent shearing characteristics. Its globe shape growth habit reaches 2-3 feet tall. Ideally used as a hedge, border, specimen, and around foundations.
Match the cultivar to its mature size and form
Yaupon varies substantially in size and shape. Virginia Cooperative Extension’s March 2024 review gives a species range of 5–20 feet tall and 3–10 feet wide. UF/IFAS describes large-growing forms around 15–25 feet tall and about as wide. These are different organizations’ horticultural descriptions, not a single guaranteed size range for an individual plant. Check the named cultivar’s mature dimensions before planting and leave enough room for its particular form.
| Form or goal | What to check |
|---|---|
| Compact plant | Confirm the cultivar’s mature height and spread; compact forms are included in UF/IFAS cultivar profiles. |
| Weeping shape | Allow room for the cultivar’s spreading or cascading form; weeping forms are included in Virginia Cooperative Extension and UF/IFAS profiles. |
| Berries | Buy a labeled female cultivar and confirm that a male yaupon is present nearby. UF/IFAS recommends buying a plant already bearing berries if you want confirmation that it is a fruiting female. |
| Neat hedge or topiary | Yaupon tolerates heavy pruning, but account for root sprouts that may need repeated cutting. |
Yaupon is dioecious: each individual plant is male or female. Only female plants bear berries, and fruiting requires pollination by a male of the same species. Do not infer sex from the common name; check the plant label. UF/IFAS identifies ‘Nana’ as a male cultivar, so it does not produce berries.

Plant yaupon holly step by step
- Check the planting location. Confirm that the selected cultivar fits the available space, including room for suckers, and that the spot is outside the defensible space nearest a home.
- Prepare a broad planting hole. UF/IFAS recommends digging at least 1.5 times as wide as the root ball and slightly shallower than its depth.
- Inspect the root ball. Remove roots circling the pot or trunk and shave the outer layer of the root ball, following UF/IFAS guidance.
- Set the planting height. Place the plant so the top of its root ball sits about 1 inch above the surrounding soil, as recommended by UF/IFAS.
- Backfill and provide establishment care. Virginia Cooperative Extension notes that yaupon transplants readily and adapts to a wide range of soil moisture. The sources do not establish a universal watering schedule for newly planted shrubs, so adjust establishment care to local weather and soil and consult local Extension guidance for a precise schedule.
Maintain shape and manage new shoots
Prune yaupon to maintain a hedge or topiary shape; it tolerates heavy pruning. Where a neat appearance matters, watch for shoots beneath the canopy and cut them back as needed. Since root suckers can spread into thickets, avoid disturbing soil under the plant if you do not want to encourage or manage that growth.
USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service says established trees require little water or extra nutrients. That guidance concerns established trees; it does not provide a watering timetable for a newly planted shrub. Pest and disease concerns are described as low to modest by the cited Extension sources, though conditions vary by location.

Keep yaupon out of the home’s closest defensible space
North Carolina Extension assigns yaupon holly a high flammability rating and advises against planting it in the defensible space nearest a home. Treat that as a real constraint when selecting a site, and follow local fire-safety guidance for the property. North Carolina Extension also notes low-severity poison characteristics; that brief profile is not a basis for broader claims about ingestion safety. For a suspected exposure involving a person or animal, contact an appropriate poison-control or veterinary authority.
