Do not approach or disturb a wasp nest you have not identified. If anyone at risk has a sting allergy, or the nest is inside a wall, attic, crawlspace, underground, or somewhere difficult to reach, contact a licensed pest-control operator. For an accessible outdoor nest, DIY treatment is only an option if you can follow the exact pesticide label without getting close to the nest or putting people, pets, or property at risk.
First, decide whether the nest is safe to approach
Keep people away from the nest and move off calmly. Do not swat at wasps or try to inspect the nest up close: wasps can sting repeatedly, and disturbing one may prompt others to attack. NYC Health advises not approaching nests and warns, “It is dangerous to try to remove a nest yourself.” NYC Health’s wasp guidance recommends using a licensed pest-control operator.
Risk depends on both the nest and the person dealing with it. A known sting allergy, uncertainty about what insect made the nest, or a nest that is not readily accessible are reasons to arrange professional removal rather than attempt it yourself. Nest locations can include eaves and shrubs as well as wall voids, attics, crawlspaces, and underground sites. Washington State Department of Health and Illinois Department of Public Health describe these varied nesting sites and the risks of removal.
When to hire a pest-control professional
Wall voids, attics, vents, and crawlspaces
Have a professional handle a nest in a building cavity. The visible opening may be some distance from the colony, and sealing that opening can drive insects to seek another way into the living space. Illinois Department of Public Health notes that nests in vents, attics, crawlspaces, or hollow walls can require professional treatment.

Underground nests and difficult access
Do not reach into a nest site or try to treat it from a ladder. Underground nests and nests high on a building are harder to assess and control safely; Illinois guidance urges extreme caution with ladder work. A licensed operator is the better choice when safe access or a clear retreat path is uncertain.
Allergy, uncertainty, or immediate hazard
If you or someone who may be exposed has a sting allergy, use a licensed operator. The same applies if you cannot confidently identify the insect or determine whether a product is appropriate. Do not wait for seasonal cold if the nest creates an immediate hazard; keep people clear and seek professional help.

Can you remove an accessible outdoor nest yourself?
Only consider DIY treatment for an accessible outdoor nest when there is no known sting-allergy concern, you can remain at a safe distance, and the product label specifically permits that use. A pesticide label is not a general recipe: directions and restrictions differ by product, so never transfer instructions from one can to another. If any condition is not met, do not proceed.
The EPA-hosted label for one product, “WASP, HORNET AND YELLOWJACKET KILLER,” dated June 1, 2026, gives outdoor nest directions that include treating early in the morning or late in the evening when insect activity is minimal, staying a safe distance away and not directly underneath the nest, keeping the wind at your back, and waiting at least 24 hours before removing the nest. Those are directions for that specific label, not universal timing or instructions. Read the current product label for the product you intend to use and follow it exactly.

Before using a pesticide
- Read the full label, including approved use sites, protective measures, restrictions, and re-entry directions.
- Keep children, toys, and pets away for the period stated on the label.
- Prevent spray drift and runoff; the cited product label specifically warns against runoff and drains.
- Do not use a product unless you can comply with every label instruction while staying safely away from the nest.
EPA’s pesticide safety tips likewise say to follow the label, use the protective measures it specifies, keep children and pets away as directed, and prevent drift or runoff. Protective equipment does not make an otherwise hazardous nest safe to approach.
Why traps usually do not remove a nest
Traps are not a substitute for treating or removing a nest. Washington State Department of Health says typical wasp traps are effective for yellowjackets, not hornets or wasps. If using a yellowjacket trap, Santa Clara County Vector Control suggests placing it away from the house and people and following its replacement instructions. A trap’s usefulness depends on identifying the insect; it does not establish that a nearby nest has been removed.

When leaving the nest alone may be reasonable
If the nest is away from people and the building, and it poses no immediate hazard, keeping a safe distance and leaving it undisturbed may be a reasonable alternative. Missouri Department of Conservation describes marking a safety zone and waiting for a hard freeze as nonlethal options for yellowjacket nests. That is not suitable when people face an immediate risk; in that case, keep clear and contact a licensed operator.
