For a typical squeaky hinged door, first check for loose or damaged hardware and rubbing, then clean and lubricate the hinge. Work the lubricant in by moving the door, wipe away excess, and test it. If the noise remains, clean the hinge pin or address a damaged hinge or door alignment.
Step 1: Locate the squeak and inspect the hinges
- Open and close the door slowly. Listen to identify which hinge is making the noise, and check the other hinges while you are there.
- Look for the cause. Check for visible grime or rust, loose screws, a bent pin, and signs that the door rubs or sits out of alignment. Tighten a loose hinge screw if appropriate.
A squeak can come from friction caused by dirt, rust, or insufficient lubrication, but loose hardware, a bent pin, or poor alignment can also be responsible. Lubricant will not fix a damaged hinge or a door that is rubbing.
Step 2: Clean and lubricate the hinge
- Wipe visible dirt from the hinge.
- Place a folded paper towel or rag beneath it to catch drips.
- Apply a modest amount of lubricant to the hinge pin and seams. A precision-straw applicator can help direct spray into the hinge; follow the product label.
Household oil is one option listed in the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation’s door-maintenance guide. WD-40’s guidance names its Multi-Use Product, a no-drip formula, and a dry PTFE lubricant as options. The manufacturer describes the no-drip formula as suited to vertical surfaces and the dry PTFE product as leaving a dry film resistant to dirt and dust; these are product descriptions, not independent comparisons. Availability and suitability may vary, so check the label. You do not need a particular brand if you have a suitable lubricant.
Schlage also lists bar soap, petroleum jelly, paraffin candle wax, and olive oil as temporary household fixes. These can be messy: keep them on the hinge, protect the door’s finish, and clean up excess.

Step 3: Work it in, wipe, and retest
- Open and close the door several times to distribute the lubricant through the moving hinge surfaces.
- Wipe excess from the hinge and nearby surfaces. Clean any drips promptly so they do not stain the door or leave the floor slippery.
- Open and close the door again to check whether the squeak has stopped.
Schlage describes lubrication as a temporary fix that may need occasional reapplication. Reapply if the noise returns; the cited guidance does not establish a universal maintenance interval.

If the hinge is secure and intact
If applying lubricant at the hinge did not help, the pin and the hinge’s moving surfaces may need direct cleaning. Close and support the door before lifting or removing a pin; an unsupported door can shift or fall. Depending on the hinge, a hammer and nail or thin punch may be needed to move the pin. Clean grime or rust from it, apply lubricant, reinstall it, and retest. WD-40 Australia also describes using steel wool to clean a rusty or grimy pin.

If the door still squeaks, rubs, or sticks
Do not keep adding lubricant to a pinched, badly rusted, or damaged hinge; replacement may be needed. If the door rubs or sticks, check its fit, alignment, and fasteners instead. Match a replacement hinge to the door’s required dimensions and finish; those depend on the installation.
Schlage characterizes lubrication as the easiest, most cost-effective solution for squeaky hinges, while noting that it is temporary. The right next step depends on what inspection reveals: lubricate friction, clean a dirty pin, adjust loose or misaligned hardware, or replace damaged parts.
