The 12 choices below are regional examples—not a universal ranking. Match each plant to your climate, soil, light and drainage, and water it carefully while it establishes.
What to plant in a Minnesota fall garden
University of Minnesota Extension’s guidance supports fall planting for many herbaceous perennials and identifies shrubs for fall and winter interest. Its recommendations are Minnesota guidance; local hardiness, weather and site conditions elsewhere may differ. The shrub examples below are valued for seasonal interest, not established as the best choices for every yard.
Because the available guidance does not compare twelve plants in a common trial, this is a practical list of options supported by Extension sources, not a scored or ranked “best” list.
Perennials: flowers and lasting garden color
- Northern-hardy perennial chrysanthemums: Choose a perennial mum bred for northern gardens, rather than assuming a florist mum will survive Minnesota winters. UMN Extension says the varieties it describes are suited to full sun and well-drained soil and are reliably hardy in Zones 3–9. Its breeding work began in 1977. These claims apply to the varieties discussed by Extension, not every plant sold as a mum. Forms include cushion, upright, shrub-cushion Mammoth™ and wave types. Mammoth™ forms can reach 3–4 feet across by their second year, so allow room for spread. Read UMN Extension’s hardy mum guidance.
- Other herbaceous perennials suited to your site: UMN says many herbaceous perennials can be planted in late August into September, but that broad timing advice does not establish a list of additional species as universal fall recommendations. Before choosing another perennial, check its local hardiness, planting window, light and soil needs.
Shrubs: fall color, berries and winter structure
UMN Extension’s seasonal-interest examples include these five shrubs. Confirm mature size, site requirements and regional suitability before planting; the list is not a guarantee that every shrub fits every landscape.

- DESIGNED FOR LASTING BEAUTY – This blend combines annual and perennial wildflowers for season-long color and a meadow that continues to mature over time. - EASY TO PLANT & GENEROUS COVERAGE – One 4 oz bag covers up to 500 square feet (approximately 10–20 lbs per acre). Plant in spring, early summer, or fall with proper soil preparation. Includes planting instructions for the best possible germination and long-term success.
- FAMILY-OWNED QUALITY YOU CAN TRUST – Proudly packaged by Paper Street Perennials, a family-owned American small business dedicated to producing premium wildflower seed mixes with environmentally friendly packaging, exceptional customer service, and seeds selected for outstanding performance.
- Black chokeberry: An option from Extension’s fall- and winter-interest shrub list. Check mature size and growing conditions for your site before selecting a cultivar.
- Redosier dogwood: Listed by Extension for seasonal interest. Verify that its eventual size and site needs suit the space available.
- Serviceberry or juneberry: Extension includes serviceberry/juneberry among shrubs with seasonal interest. Confirm the particular plant’s mature dimensions and local suitability.
- Tatarian dogwood: Another Extension-listed seasonal-interest choice. Check the selected plant’s size and growing requirements before placing it.
- Winterberry: Included in Extension’s list of shrubs that contribute color through fall and winter. Match its soil, light and moisture needs to the planting location.
That evidence supports five named shrubs, not a full set of twelve individually verified species. To make up the remaining options in a real planting plan, choose additional locally appropriate perennials or shrubs only after checking reliable regional guidance rather than treating a generic list as a guarantee.
When to plant—and when the freeze deadline applies
For many Minnesota herbaceous perennials, late August into September is an excellent planting window. Water newly planted perennials well until the ground freezes. For trees and shrubs, late summer and early fall can also be suitable, but dry weather makes attentive watering particularly important. UMN Extension’s August garden checklist covers perennial planting; its September garden checklist addresses fall garden tasks and drought care.

- DESIGNED FOR THE MIDWESTERN UNITED STATES – Our Midwest Wildflower Seed Mix contains 16 carefully selected annual and perennial wildflower species chosen for the growing conditions found throughout Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Ohio, Wisconsin, Kentucky, Eastern Kansas, and Eastern Nebraska. Also suitable for Southern Manitoba and Southern Ontario.
- 16 CURATED WILDFLOWER SPECIES – Features a colorful blend of Purple Coneflower, Black-Eyed Susan, New England Aster, Purple Giant Hyssop, Lance-Leaved Coreopsis, Plains Coreopsis, Mexican Hat, Indian Blanket, Cornflower, Scarlet Flax, and more for continuous blooms from spring through fall.
- SUPPORTS BEES, BUTTERFLIES & BENEFICIAL INSECTS – A diverse mix of nectar-rich wildflowers helps attract pollinators throughout the growing season while creating beautiful habitat for native wildlife.
- FAST COLOR AND LONG-TERM ESTABLISHMENT – Annual species provide vibrant first-year blooms while perennial species establish strong root systems and return year after year, creating an increasingly beautiful planting over time.
- NO GRASS SEED OR FILLERS – Pure wildflower seed blend ideal for meadows, field borders, homesteads, pollinator habitat, naturalized landscapes, conservation projects, and large open spaces. Plant in spring, early summer, or late fall for best results.
Do not confuse fall planting with fall division. UMN recommends dividing certain spring- and early-summer-blooming perennials at least four to six weeks before the ground typically freezes. That is division timing, not a universal cutoff for planting all perennials. See the September checklist.
How to choose a plant for your site
Before buying, compare the plant’s needs with the conditions where it will grow. UMN Extension advises considering soil type and drainage, light, climate, water availability and exposure when planting trees and shrubs. Apply the same practical discipline to perennial choices: a fall planting date cannot compensate for a poor site match.

- DESIGNED FOR SHADE – Unlike traditional wildflower mixes intended for full sun, this blend contains 16 annual and perennial species selected for woodland edges, beneath trees, and other partially shaded locations.
- 16 CURATED SPECIES – A carefully selected blend of annuals and perennials chosen to provide season-long color, diverse bloom forms, and pollinator value.
- ATTRACTS POLLINATORS – Supports bees, butterflies, hummingbirds, and other beneficial insects with nectar-rich blooms throughout the growing season.
- NO FILLERS OR GRASS SEED – 100% wildflower seed blend containing no grass seed or unnecessary fillers.
- HIGH COVERAGE – One 1 pound bag covers up to 3,200 square feet when planted according to instructions. Suitable for gardens, woodland edges, naturalized landscapes, and shaded planting areas.
- Climate and hardiness: Check whether the plant is suited to your location; Minnesota guidance may not transfer to another region.
- Sun and exposure: Identify the light the planting area receives and compare it with the plant’s requirements.
- Soil and drainage: A plant that needs well-drained soil may struggle in a persistently wet spot.
- Space: Use the selected plant’s mature width and height to set spacing, rather than planting to its nursery-pot size.
- Water: Make sure you can provide establishment watering, especially if late summer is dry.

Establishing trees and shrubs
UMN Extension gives this baseline schedule for newly planted trees and shrubs: water daily for 1–2 weeks, every 2–3 days for 12 weeks, then weekly until roots are established. Adjust for rainfall and check actual soil moisture; the schedule is a starting point, not a substitute for checking conditions. In drought, UMN’s September checklist recommends deep, infrequent watering. Consult the planting guide and September checklist.

Mulch and fertilizer for woody plants
For the woody-plant application described by UMN, wood or bark chips can be spread in a 2–3-inch layer over a 6-foot-diameter circle, keeping mulch at least 4 inches away from the trunk. This exact layout is not a general instruction for every perennial bed. UMN also cautions against late-summer nitrogen applications unless a plant is nutrient-deficient, because nitrogen can prompt growth that may not harden off before winter. See UMN’s tree and shrub planting guidance.
