Makercise’s homemade metal shaper is a reciprocating machine for cutting metal, built from a design in the Gingery machine-shop book series. Hackaday’s 2019 project report describes a build that used modern tools, including a CNC machine, rather than relying on casting alone. The machine is presented cutting chips, but the report is a project overview—not a complete build plan or a measured performance review.
What exactly is a metal shaper?
A metal shaper cuts by moving its cutter back and forth across the workpiece. That reciprocating action is similar in broad terms to a jigsaw’s motion, though a shaper is a metal-cutting machine. Brian Benchoff’s Hackaday report, published April 20, 2019, describes shapers as once-practical shop machines for tasks including cutting keyways and planing the surface of a metal plate.
What can this shaper do?
Cut keyways
A keyway is a slot in a part that allows a key to connect it to another component, such as a shaft and hub. Cutting keyways is one of the concrete jobs the Hackaday report identifies for a shaper; it does not provide dimensions, material limits, or a demonstrated capacity for Makercise’s particular machine.
Plane a metal plate
A shaper can also plane a plate’s surface by moving the cutter across it. The report notes that a Bridgeport milling machine can be used for surfacing as well. It does not compare the machines’ accuracy, finish, speed, cost, capacity, or safety, so it supports no general claim that one is better for this job.

How the project follows the Gingery design lineage
Makercise’s build is based directly on the Gingery series, which presents a sequence for building a small machine shop: a foundry and lathe come before the shaper, with a mill later in the sequence. Readers looking for the design source can search for the Gingery metal shaper book; Hackaday linked to the series on Amazon, but current editions and availability are not established here.
The project was not described as an all-casting, hand-tool build. Benchoff specifically notes that Makercise used modern tools and techniques, including a CNC machine. The report does not name the CNC machine, specify machining parameters or alloy, or provide drawings, tolerances, dimensions, or a complete bill of materials.

Is the report a build guide?
No. It offers context about the machine’s purpose, design lineage, and use of modern tools, but it is not enough to reproduce the shaper or assess its performance. It supplies no complete instructions, measured output, or detailed specification. Treat it as a project introduction and consult the relevant Gingery volume for the design itself, checking that the edition you find corresponds to the build you intend to follow.
