Test the pan’s base with a magnet: if it sticks, the pan may work on induction. Move the magnet across several parts of the base, because a small magnetic patch is not a guarantee of reliable heating. Then check for an induction-compatibility label and confirm the pan’s size and condition against your cooktop manual.
Check your cookware in this order
- Look for confirmation. Check the pan, packaging, or product specifications for an induction symbol or an explicit statement that it is induction-compatible. Bosch and Fisher & Paykel both recommend checking the cookware information as well as the appliance instructions: Bosch cookware guidance and Fisher & Paykel cookware guidance.
- Test the base with a magnet. Hold a magnet against several areas on the underside. If it does not stick anywhere, the pan is unlikely to work. If it sticks only in a small area or inconsistently, the pan may heat unevenly or fail to be detected.
- Check what the base is made of. Cast iron, steel, and magnetic stainless steel are common options. Aluminum and copper pans need a magnetic layer or base; an aluminum core inside a pan with a magnetic steel exterior is different from an all-aluminum pan.
- Inspect the shape and size. Induction works best with a flat, smooth base that is large enough for the selected cooking zone. Center the pan and check the cooktop manual for any minimum pan diameter or zone-specific guidance.
- Try it carefully if you are still unsure. Follow the cooktop manual. Fisher & Paykel describes a water-heating test in its RIV3 range manual, but the procedure and indicators are specific to that model and should not be treated as universal.
Which cookware materials work?
| Cookware construction | General induction fit | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Cast iron | Usually compatible | Confirm the base is flat and in good condition. Lift the pan rather than sliding it across the glass. |
| Steel or carbon steel | Usually compatible if magnetic | Test the base; compatibility depends on its construction. |
| Stainless steel | Depends on the alloy and base | Magnetic stainless or a pan with a magnetic base can work. “Stainless steel” by itself does not confirm compatibility. |
| Aluminum or copper | Only with a magnetic base or layer | Look for a magnetic steel layer or test the underside; ordinary all-aluminum cookware will not work. |
| Enameled steel or iron-core enamel and ceramic-clad cookware | May work if magnetic | Test the base and check the cookware maker’s guidance. |
| Glass, ordinary ceramic, porcelain, clay, or earthenware | Generally incompatible | These materials need a specially constructed magnetic base to work; verify the specific product. |
Manufacturer guidance explains why the material name alone can mislead: Bosch, Whirlpool troubleshooting, and Miele distinguish cookware with a suitable magnetic base from cookware that merely has a particular exterior material.
Why a magnetic pan might still heat poorly or go undetected
The magnet test is a screening check, not a performance guarantee. A pan may attract a magnet but have too little magnetic material, or magnetic material may cover only part of its base. Fisher & Paykel notes that a larger amount of ferromagnetic material supports more consistent and faster heating; Whirlpool warns that nonmagnetic portions of a base can heat differently or less effectively.
Detection also depends on the cooking zone and the appliance. If a pan is not recognized, check that you selected the intended zone, centered the pan, and used a pan large enough for that zone. Fisher & Paykel lists unsuitable cookware, undersizing, and incorrect centering among possible causes of an alternating display. Miele notes that, on some of its cooktops, cookware smaller than a zone’s inner marking may be treated as though no pan is present. Wolf gives a 2–3 inch lower detection range for certain models; that is a Wolf-specific note, not a universal minimum. See Fisher & Paykel’s RIV3 guidance, Miele’s troubleshooting advice, and Wolf’s cookware suggestions.

How to choose a replacement pan
If your pan fails the magnet check, choose cookware explicitly described as induction-compatible and confirm that it has a magnetic base. Match the base diameter to the cooking zones you plan to use; do not rely on the exterior material or label alone. Also consider whether the base is broad enough to provide useful magnetic coverage, whether it sits flat, and whether the pan’s type and size suit your cooking needs.
To protect a glass cooktop, center pans and lift them instead of sliding them. Rough cookware bottoms can scratch the surface; follow the care instructions for your appliance. See Samsung’s cookware and cooktop guidance and Wolf’s cookware suggestions.
