To clean an induction cooktop without scratching its glass-ceramic surface, switch it off, let it cool as your appliance manual directs, and wipe it with a soft cloth. For stuck-on food, use only a scraper made for ceramic-glass cooktops and follow your model’s instructions for surface temperature and blade angle. Lift pans instead of sliding them, and keep grit off the cooktop and pan bases.
Clean the cooktop after it cools
- Turn the controls off. If your cooktop has a key or control lock, activate it before cleaning if the manual recommends doing so.
- Wait for the surface to cool as directed by the manual. The glass can remain hot after cooking, even though induction heats cookware directly.
- Remove loose crumbs gently. Use a soft, clean cloth so particles do not drag across the glass.
- Wipe with water or a suitable ceramic-glass cooktop cleaner. Use a product approved by your appliance manual and follow its label. A purpose-made cleaner is an option, not a universal requirement.
- Remove cleaner residue and dry. Wipe with a damp cloth, then dry or buff with a clean, soft cloth.
Remove stuck-on food with the right scraper
For residue that a cloth will not lift, use a scraper designed for ceramic-glass cooktops. Scraper temperature and angle are not universal: Whirlpool’s instructions describe scraping a warm but not hot surface at roughly 45 degrees and recommend an oven mitt; Bosch’s instructions say to let the cooktop cool and use a low angle of about 20–30 degrees. These are different manufacturer directions, not settings to combine. Follow the manual for your exact model, including its precautions for the blade and surface.
Do not substitute a kitchen knife, razor blade not specified for the appliance, or other improvised tool. If the manual does not explain how to scrape your model, check with the manufacturer before proceeding.
Handle sugar, plastic, and foil spills carefully
Sugar spills need prompt attention: Whirlpool warns that cooled sugary residue can adhere and cause pitting or permanent marks, and SCHOTT CERAN notes that cooled sugar can leave small surface defects. Plastic and foil spills may also require immediate attention. These situations can involve a hot surface, so do not automatically apply the cool-surface cleaning steps above.

Follow your model’s instructions for the specific spill and hot-surface precautions. Use protective mitts where directed, and do not touch the glass or scrape it in a way the manual does not permit.
Prevent scratches during everyday use
- Lift cookware; do not slide it. Sliding a pan can drag grit across the glass and scratch it.
- Check the surface before setting down a pan. Brush away salt, sand, crumbs, and other loose debris first.
- Keep pan bottoms clean and dry. Debris trapped under cookware can mark the cooktop; a wet or dirty base also leaves residue.
- Use soft cleaning materials. A soft cloth and compatible cooktop cleaner help avoid the abrasion caused by rough pads or powders.
Materials and products to avoid
Do not use steel wool, abrasive powders or pads, abrasive sponges, or oven cleaners on the glass. Manuals may also prohibit particular chemicals or methods, including stain removers, ammonia, bleach, rust remover, or steam cleaners. Check both your appliance manual and the cleaner label: prohibited products differ by manufacturer.

Should you apply a coating or cover the cooktop?
The care guidance cited here does not establish a general recommendation for scratch-prevention coatings or universal covers. SCHOTT CERAN warns that a universal protective cloth can insulate a temperature sensor. Do not cover an operating cooktop; use only accessories expressly permitted by your appliance manufacturer.
If you buy a cleaner or scraper, match it to your appliance manual. A ceramic-glass cooktop cleaner is intended for cleaning; a ceramic-glass cooktop scraper is for stuck-on residue. Some brands sell a cleaner-and-scraper kit, but neither a particular brand nor a kit is necessary for every cooktop.
