To reduce the risk of gravel chips or fresh-paving damage, take another route when practical. If you must pass through, follow the posted work-zone directions, slow to the indicated speed, leave extra room from vehicles ahead and avoid sudden maneuvers. On ordinary gravel roads, adjust your speed to conditions and keep clear of the dust cloud in front of you. These steps reduce exposure, but cannot guarantee that stones will not hit your car.
Why loose gravel and paving work can damage a car
Chip seal places aggregate over asphalt binder. Some loose chips can remain on the road until crews sweep them away; at higher speeds, stones may scatter and strike paint or windshields. Fresh surface dressing can pose a similar local hazard. Ordinary gravel roads bring additional handling and visibility concerns: loose material can move under tires, reduce grip and be thrown up by passing vehicles.
There is no single speed limit or waiting period that applies to every road project. Work methods, cleanup schedules and traffic controls vary by location and job, so signs, flaggers and other active site instructions take precedence.
What to do when driving through chip seal or fresh surface dressing
- Take an alternate route if practical. INDOT advises drivers to “Use alternate routes” around chip-seal work.
- Follow the posted speed and directions. Slow down as instructed, obey flaggers and respect closures or lane restrictions.
- Increase following distance. More space reduces exposure to stones thrown by the vehicle ahead and leaves room to respond smoothly.
- Avoid abrupt maneuvers. Steer and brake steadily, and give paving and sweeping crews room to work.
Local figures illustrate why it is important not to treat another jurisdiction’s guidance as universal. Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) describes a 35 mph limit during its chip-seal work period, from placement until excess gravel is swept, and says the surface can take up to two days to cure properly. INDOT says traffic can return after chips have set for at least one hour. Devon County Council advises 15 mph for the first few days after surface dressing in its local guidance. These are agency-specific instructions, not interchangeable rules; follow the signs and directions for the road you are using.

How to drive on ordinary gravel roads
Choose a speed that suits the road and conditions rather than assuming the surface will provide the grip of pavement. Loose gravel can shift beneath tires, and stones thrown up by traffic may chip paint or break a windshield. Keep enough distance to stay out of the dust raised by vehicles ahead: Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency advises drivers to “Always increase your following distance to stay back from the dust cloud.” If visibility or control becomes poor, slow down safely and avoid sudden steering or braking.
Protecting paint with paint protection film
Paint protection film (PPF), sometimes sold as clear paint protection film, is an optional transparent layer for the painted surfaces it covers. 3M says its Series 150 film is designed to protect paint and other vulnerable vehicle surfaces from stone chips, scratches, road tar, stains and other exposures, and directs owners to authorized installers. This is a manufacturer’s product claim, not an independent comparison of films. PPF is not a windshield solution, does not cover every part of a vehicle and should not be treated as a guarantee against damage.

- USAGE – XPEL Clear Paint Protection Film helps shield your vehicle’s finish from rock chips, scratches, and road wear. Ideal for high-impact areas like bumpers, hoods, door edges, and mirror caps.
- APPLICATION – Clean the surface, mist with slip solution, and position the film. Once aligned, squeegee out bubbles for a seamless, durable bond that looks factory-installed.
- EXTERIOR PROTECTION – Extend the life of your paint by guarding against weathering, debris, and minor abrasions. XPEL PPF acts as a nearly invisible barrier between your paint and the elements.
- SELF-HEALING TECHNOLOGY – Minor scratches and swirl marks disappear with heat exposure, restoring a smooth, glossy finish. Maintain your paint’s like-new look for years.
- ANTI-YELLOWING CLARITY – Engineered for long-term optical clarity and resistance to UV degradation. The 8-mil thick polyurethane film is virtually invisible yet provides unmatched strength and flexibility.
The 3M product page lists a 10-year consumer warranty for Series 150. That term applies to the named product as described there; consult the warranty card or an authorized installer for full terms. It should not be generalized to other films, installers, regions or types of damage.

Bitumen from surface dressing
Devon County Council’s guidance for its local surface-dressing context says some bitumen splashes on paint may be cleaned with products available from car accessory shops or garages. It advises documenting and reporting substantial damage to the contractor. The council also says not to use products to clean bitumen from tires, which it says usually wears off. This is local advice, not a universal chemical-cleaning method; check the relevant road authority’s guidance for your location.

Route choice, speed and spacing are immediate ways to reduce exposure, and they help address both paint and glass risks. PPF is a separate, optional measure for covered painted surfaces; it involves choosing suitable vehicle coverage and an installer. The cited guidance does not establish neutral price comparisons or independent tests between film brands, so assess fitment and warranty terms for the particular product rather than assuming one film is best.
