Choose outdoor tile for a pool area only when the manufacturer documents that the exact product and finish are suitable for wet, barefoot use in the intended location. Then check its slip-related data and test context, surface texture, drainage needs, climate performance, and installation requirements. A DCOF value can help compare products, but no single test number guarantees a slip-free deck.
What tile is safe around a pool?
There is no universal “pool-safe” tile label or single DCOF cutoff that establishes safety for every deck. Pool areas combine water, barefoot traffic, outdoor exposure, and site-specific conditions. Look for an explicit manufacturer statement covering the use you have: pool coping, a deck, a sloped transition, or another regularly wet barefoot area. A general “outdoor” designation by itself does not answer whether the tile is appropriate for that combination.
Ask the manufacturer or project specifier which declared use category applies. ANSI A326.3-2021 distinguishes categories including Exterior, Wet and Interior, Wet Plus; its classifications address particular use conditions rather than defining one threshold that makes every product safe around every pool. TCNA’s ANSI A326.3 resource explains the standard and its use classifications. Confirm the currently adopted standard and any local requirements with the relevant authority for your project.
How to evaluate a tile before buying
- Define the location and exposure. Identify whether the tile is for coping, a mostly level deck, a sloped area, or a zone that stays wet and is used barefoot. Note likely standing water, contaminants, traffic, and climate.
- Get the technical sheet for the exact product and finish. Check the declared application or use classification, any slip-related result and its test method, exterior-use statement, water absorption, and frost or freeze-thaw information. Make sure the documentation applies to the finish and size you plan to purchase.
- Assess the surface and site together. Ask whether the manufacturer identifies the texture as appropriate for wet barefoot use. Consider how the deck drains, whether water can pool, grout-joint layout, likely contaminants, cleaning, and expected wear. A texture or test result cannot compensate for poor drainage or unsuitable maintenance.
- Confirm climate and installation compatibility. In freeze-thaw climates, verify separate exterior and frost-performance data; wet-use classification does not establish frost resistance. Follow the tile maker’s installation instructions and confirm that the substrate, setting materials, and grout are suitable for the tile and outdoor exposure.
- Review a sample in context. Evaluate the actual finish where it will be used and consult the manufacturer or a qualified specifier for unusual conditions such as ramps, persistent standing water, heavy contamination, or severe freeze-thaw exposure.
How to interpret DCOF and slip-related claims
Dynamic coefficient of friction (DCOF) is one measured input, not a promise that a surface will prevent slips in real use. The test result belongs to its method and conditions; do not treat it as a guarantee or assume the same number applies to a different tile or finish. TCNA’s discussion of ANSI A326.3 identifies other relevant conditions, including contaminants, drainage, surface structure, grout joints, traction features, and the intended use. It also states that Exterior, Wet classification does not itself indicate frost resistance; ceramic-tile frost resistance is addressed through ANSI A137.1 criteria. See TCNA’s ANSI A326.3 information.

Some manufacturers provide their own application guidance alongside DCOF data. For example, Daltile describes wet areas with minimal footwear, including pool decking, as an application for which applicable products are listed with wet DCOF of at least 0.60. That is the manufacturer’s guidance for its relevant products, not a universal threshold to apply to unrelated tiles. Check the current documentation for the exact product and finish.
LATICRETE’s technical design manual, Tiled Swimming Pools, Fountains and Spas, makes the limitation plain: “Because many variables affect the possibility of a slip occurring, the COF shall not be the only factor in determining the appropriateness of a tile for a particular application.”

Check texture, drainage, and maintenance
Slip risk depends on how the whole surface performs in its setting. Water, soap, oils, sunscreen, algae, and other contaminants can change traction. Slope and drainage affect whether water clears or remains underfoot; grout joints and surface features also influence the walking surface. Cleaning practices, accumulated residue, wear, and traffic matter over time.
- Check whether the manufacturer identifies the surface texture for the intended wet, barefoot application.
- Plan for drainage and consider where water could stand, including transitions and low points.
- Ask how cleaning products and maintenance affect the finish and traction features.
- Consider grout-joint layout and installation details as part of the walking surface.
Crossville discourages polished tile where standing water may occur. That advice is a useful warning against choosing a finish based on appearance alone; assess the specific finish and conditions rather than assuming all outdoor tiles behave alike.

Wet suitability and frost resistance are separate checks
A tile can have a wet-use classification without that classification saying anything about freeze-thaw performance. For a climate with freezing temperatures, look for separate exterior/frost data and follow the manufacturer’s installation conditions. Ceramic-tile frost resistance is addressed through ANSI A137.1 criteria, as distinct from the wet-use classifications discussed in ANSI A326.3.
Porcelain may be a plausible choice when the particular product is documented for the intended pool-deck use. The word “porcelain” alone does not establish suitability: verify its finish, declared application, climate performance, water absorption data, and installation requirements.

A product example: Daltile Fixture – Glacier
Daltile’s listing for Fixture – Glacier states that it is suitable for exterior floor applications, including pool decking and other wet areas with minimal footwear, and gives a target wet DCOF of at least 0.60. Its technical specifications list water absorption below 0.5% under ASTM C373. The listing also says the product is suitable for exterior applications in freezing and non-freezing climates when proper installation methods are followed. These are product-specific statements, not universal requirements or evidence about other tiles and finishes. Review the current listing and technical sheet before specifying it: Daltile Fixture – Glacier.
