Radon, carbon monoxide, dampness and mold, smoke, and chemicals from household products can all affect the air inside a home—but they pose different risks and need different fixes. Test for radon, use and maintain carbon-monoxide alarms and fuel-burning appliances, prevent and promptly dry water damage, keep the home smoke-free, and ventilate when using products that release fumes. An air cleaner can help with some particles, but it is not a universal solution.
Why indoor air deserves attention
Indoor air quality depends on what enters or is released inside a home, how air moves through it, moisture, filtration, building materials, and outdoor air that comes indoors. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says people spend about 90 percent of their time indoors, on average, and levels of some pollutants are often several times higher indoors than outdoors. Those are broad averages, not a prediction about any one house, but they make source control and sensible ventilation worthwhile.
A cough or wheeze alone cannot identify the cause. Some pollutants have no immediate symptoms, while others may irritate the airways or aggravate asthma. Focus on the hazards you can detect and control rather than relying on smell or symptoms to judge whether the air is safe.
Radon: test because you cannot sense it
Radon is a radioactive gas from soil that can enter through openings in floors and walls that touch the ground. It is odorless and causes no immediate symptoms. Its established health effect is lung cancer, which can develop years after exposure. EPA calls radon the leading cause of lung cancer among nonsmokers and the second leading cause overall; it estimates indoor radon contributes to about 21,000 U.S. lung-cancer deaths each year. How to find out whether a home has elevated radon
Testing is the way to discover elevated radon. A do-it-yourself test kit is one option; professional testing is another. Follow the kit’s instructions and the relevant local guidance, since test duration and procedures depend on the method. If a result indicates a problem, EPA recommends contacting a qualified radon mitigation specialist. Testing and mitigation guidance is available from EPA’s radon program.
Do not count on a standard air purifier or particle filter to remove radon. EPA explains that air cleaners without special media such as activated carbon or alumina will not remove gaseous pollutants including radon or reduce their associated health effects: Will air cleaners reduce health risks?

Carbon monoxide: prevent exposure and heed alarms
Carbon monoxide (CO) is produced by fuel-burning appliances and can be fatal at high levels. Possible symptoms include headache, dizziness, disorientation, nausea, and fatigue; they are not a reliable way to rule exposure in or out. Install and maintain CO alarms, and have fuel-burning appliances installed and maintained properly. Never use a cooking stove to heat a home or run a fuel-powered generator indoors. EPA’s home guidance covers combustion pollutants and other indoor-air hazards.
Fuel-burning appliances can also produce nitrogen dioxide and other combustion pollution. Where possible, vent combustion appliances outdoors and follow the manufacturer’s installation and maintenance instructions. For alarm placement, power options, and local requirements, consult the alarm maker’s instructions and local fire or building guidance.

Dampness and mold: stop the moisture source
Mold grows where moisture persists. Spores can cause hay-fever-type symptoms and trigger asthma attacks. EPA’s concise guidance is: “The key to mold control is moisture control.” Repair leaks, remove excess water, and dry water-damaged areas and items within 24–48 hours to help prevent mold growth. EPA also recommends keeping indoor humidity between 30 and 50 percent. A humidity gauge can help monitor conditions, but it does not replace fixing leaks or drying wet materials. - Find and repair the leak or other source of water.
- Remove standing water and dry affected materials promptly.
- Clean mold promptly and address the moisture that allowed it to grow.
- Use ventilation or dehumidification as appropriate to help manage moisture.
An air cleaner may capture some airborne particles, but it will not correct a leak or dry building materials. Treat the water problem, not just the air.

Smoke and common asthma triggers
Keep the home smoke-free. Secondhand smoke and triggers such as mold, dust mites, and pet dander can worsen symptoms, particularly for people with asthma. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) can be released by paints, cleaning products, pesticides, furnishings, and building materials. Follow product labels and ventilate during use when directed or appropriate. Never mix cleaning products unless their instructions explicitly direct you to do so. Asbestos is a separate building-material hazard, not a synonym for every old material. EPA identifies degraded insulation as one possible source of released fibers. Appearance alone does not establish whether a material contains asbestos. If a material may be asbestos-containing, seek appropriate local or qualified professional guidance before disturbing it. What ventilation and air cleaners can—and cannot—do
Ventilation can help dilute or remove some pollutants, and filtration can reduce some airborne particles. The right approach depends on the pollutant, room, and equipment. Follow appliance and product instructions, and do not treat an air cleaner as a substitute for eliminating smoke, maintaining fuel-burning appliances, repairing moisture problems, or testing and mitigating radon.
If considering an air cleaner, check the room coverage claim, filter replacement needs, and noise, and match the device to the pollutant you want to address. A portable particle cleaner may help with some particle exposures; HVAC filtration is a different option tied to the home’s heating and cooling system. EPA cautions that performance depends on the pollutant and equipment. Neither ordinary particle filtration nor a general-purpose purifier removes radon.
A practical prevention checklist
- Test the home for radon; follow the test method and local guidance.
- Install and maintain CO alarms and arrange proper installation and maintenance for fuel-burning appliances.
- Never use a cooking stove for heat or operate a fuel-powered generator indoors.
- Repair leaks, dry water-damaged materials within 24–48 hours, and keep indoor humidity in EPA’s recommended 30–50 percent range.
- Keep the home smoke-free and reduce asthma triggers such as mold, dust mites, and pet dander.
- Use household products as labeled, ventilate during use, and do not mix cleaners unless directed.
- Use filtration as a targeted aid—not as a replacement for source control or radon mitigation.
