TNHB’s proposed rental housing scheme for DFO Compound and Thomas Park Housing Unit in Coimbatore’s Race Course area remains at the proposal and preliminary-measures stage. A report published October 3, 2026 said access-road widening initiatives were in place and that the Board was seeking permissions from the Police and Forest Departments and the Directorate of Town and Country Planning. It did not report final project approvals or construction underway.
What TNHB is proposing for Race Course
The Tamil Nadu Housing Board (TNHB) has been directed by the Housing and Urban Development Department to prepare an apartment-type rental housing proposal for two Board properties in Race Course: DFO Compound and Thomas Park Housing Unit. The October 3, 2026 report gives the sites’ areas as 3.3 acres and 6.41 acres, but does not clearly match each figure to a named property. India Live, October 3, 2026
The latest reporting describes early preparatory activity, not an approved construction project. TNHB was pursuing permissions from the Police and Forest Departments and the Directorate of Town and Country Planning, while initiatives to widen roads leading to the sites were reported. India Live, October 3, 2026
How the proposal reached this stage
In July 2026, Housing and Urban Development Minister P. Rajkumar inspected both sites and instructed officials to prepare a rental-scheme proposal. That report described town-planning approval as forthcoming; the later October report still described permissions as being sought. Together, the reports establish a proposal in preparation, not confirmation that all required approvals have been granted. The Hindu, July 3, 2026 India Live, October 3, 2026

Existing structures and site history
The October report says dilapidated structures at both properties were demolished and the sites had remained unused for nearly a decade. It reports 108 demolished houses at DFO Compound and 222 at Thomas Park Housing Unit. A July report likewise described more than ten years without work following demolition, so the elapsed period is best understood as approximate and as reported by those outlets. What has not been announced
The reports do not specify the proposed flat count or configuration, design, project budget, rent, tenant eligibility, or application and allotment process. They also do not establish a construction tender or start date. No booking or application route has been reported, so these TNHB flats should not be treated as available to rent or as open for applications.
How Kavundampalayam compares—and what it does not tell us
The October report cites TNHB’s Kavundampalayam development as a precedent, but its reported scale and cost are not plans or estimates for Race Course.
| Reported Kavundampalayam figure | What it refers to |
|---|---|
| 1,848 houses | Homes reported for the comparator project; not a Race Course flat count. |
| 14 floors | Building height reported for Kavundampalayam; no Race Course height is stated. |
| ₹512 crore | Construction cost reported for Kavundampalayam; no Race Course budget is stated. |
These are figures in the October 2026 report about the comparator project, whose construction was described as taking place in 2016. They should not be used to infer the Race Course scheme’s size, design, or cost. India Live, October 3, 2026

Where to look for a confirmed construction update
Official TNHB procurement records for existing Coimbatore housing and maintenance activity, including existing Race Course flats, do not by themselves establish approval or a construction tender for this proposed development. The Board’s 2025–2026 policy note describes its general housing role, not project-specific status. A reliable confirmation would need to identify this Race Course scheme in a project-specific TNHB announcement, approval, or tender. TNHB Tamil Nadu e-Procurement
