The project is intended to strengthen Bhutan’s international connections and serve as an aviation and logistics gateway—but the published schedule is a plan, not confirmation that each construction stage is on track.
What the Gelephu airport project is intended to do
The new airport is part of the wider Gelephu Mindfulness City development in southern Bhutan. GMC materials describe its intended role as connecting Bhutan with major aviation hubs and serving as a logistics and aviation partner for Northeast India and South Asia. GMC Authority CEO Liew Mun Leong described the vision this way: “The airport itself is one of the key components of GMC. Construction schedule: reported milestones and targets
Business Bhutan reported that the official commencement ceremony took place on 8 July 2025, with initial work involving river-diversion earthworks and land preparation. The report set out this planned sequence:

These dates come from the schedule reported by Business Bhutan. A search result dated 3 October 2026 also reported that an airfield construction contract had been awarded and repeated the December 2029 target, but did not identify the contractor or independently establish physical progress. For context, a translation of the King’s 2023 National Day address contained an earlier forecast: experts expected construction to begin after the 2024 monsoon and finish within two years. Later reporting instead describes the July 2025 commencement and December 2029 target, so the earlier estimate should not be treated as the current schedule. Gelephu already has an airport—do not confuse the two
Bhutan’s Department of Air Transport also uses the name “Gelephu International Airport” for an existing facility near Gelephu town. Its page describes a 1,500-metre runway and regular operations since December 2015. Those facts belong to the existing airport, not to the specifications or operating history of the new GMC-linked construction project. The distinction is important when reading construction updates: an operational airport in Gelephu does not mean the new runway, terminal, or systems are complete. The available project reporting does not provide verified engineering specifications for the new development.

What current connectivity can—and cannot—tell travelers
Drukair’s January–February 2026 magazine reported the launch of twice-weekly international service on the Gelephu–Kolkata–Gelephu sector. It is a concrete example of connectivity involving Gelephu, but it does not establish the future airport’s route network, service frequency, or passenger capacity. The cited project materials and reporting do not provide a named, attributable forecast for passenger capacity or annual traffic, nor a verified investment, jobs, or economic-impact estimate. Nor do they independently confirm that every stage in the reported schedule has occurred on time. The 2029 date is therefore best understood as an announced target, not a guaranteed opening date.
