More than 200 high-school students from across the Black Hills attended the first day of the Associated General Contractors (AGC) of South Dakota’s Construction Career Exploration Camp at Rapid City’s Central States Fairgrounds, according to KOTA Territory TV. Students tried hands-on activities in construction trades and met regional contractors and technical educators to learn about options after high school.
What students tried at the camp
Camp activities included operating heavy equipment and working with concrete, carpentry, welding and plumbing. The practical sessions let students sample different kinds of construction work rather than only hear about them.
The camp also connected students with regional contractors and technical educators. Conversations covered possible post-graduation pathways, summer jobs and apprenticeships.
Why AGC of South Dakota held the event
Justin Rey, AGC of South Dakota’s director of workforce development, said the aim was to help students discover whether construction might suit them. Exploration can also help a student rule out a career path without treating that decision as a failure.

Students saw routes beyond a four-year college
Grant Steiner said the camp highlighted options beyond a traditional four-year college program and that he was looking forward to technical school.
“To me, it shows that there’s different opportunities other than just going to a college for four years,” Steiner said.

What is known about attendance and timing
KOTA reported that more than 200 students attended the first day. Its October 3, 2026, story said another 200 students from outlying districts were expected the following day; that was a projection, not a confirmed attendance count.
The story described the first day as Wednesday and said camp activities would continue Thursday from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., but it did not provide calendar dates for those weekdays. The schedule should therefore be understood as KOTA’s report, not as an independently confirmed current or future event listing.
