An open container of plain baking soda may help reduce some closet odors. The advice is a simple household odor-control measure—not a proven way to remove every smell, dry out a damp closet, or fix the source of a persistent odor. The familiar “one cup” amount is customary advice, not an established dose.
Why put baking soda in a closet?
Baking soda, or sodium bicarbonate, is recommended as a passive odor absorber: place it in an open container in the area where an unwanted smell is noticed. The University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture Cooperative Extension specifically advises leaving an open container in a closet or refrigerator. The University of Florida IFAS Extension also lists baking soda as an option for odor-producing areas.
The method is low-effort, but the guidance does not establish how quickly it works or how much odor it will reduce in a particular closet. It is best understood as a possible aid for some smells, not a general air cleaner or substitute for finding the cause.
Does baking soda work on musty or other closet odors?
It may help with some odors, but it will not necessarily affect all of them. A University of Wisconsin Extension handout explains that many unpleasant odors are acidic and may react with baking soda. Other odor compounds are not acidic, so baking soda may have no effect on them.

That explanation is a reason the method can help in some cases, not a guarantee about every musty smell. If the odor continues, inspect the closet and its contents for a source rather than relying on an absorber alone.
How much baking soda should you use?
The sources support using an open container, but they do not specify a closet-tested quantity, container material, exact placement, or replacement schedule. One cup is a common household suggestion, not an amount shown to be optimal or necessary. Plain baking soda in a simple open dish is sufficient for trying the method; a special scented formula or branded device is not required by the guidance.

Does baking soda remove moisture?
The closet recommendation is about odor control, not dehumidifying. Utah State University Extension notes in a food-storage context that moisture can cause baking soda to react and chemically change; it does not establish baking soda as a way to dry a closet. If the space is damp, address the moisture and check affected items rather than treating baking soda as a remedy for dampness or mold.
What to do if the smell remains
Look for and address the source: check clothing and stored items, and clean or dry affected items and surfaces as appropriate. An odor absorber placed nearby does not remove residue or resolve an ongoing cause.

For smoke after a fire specifically, Oklahoma State University Extension advises cleaning affected surfaces and household items, opening closet doors, and using fresh air when weather permits. That is fire-related cleanup guidance, not a universal protocol for every closet odor.

The University of Florida IFAS Extension also mentions clay-based kitty litter for odor-producing areas. Oklahoma State University Extension mentions activated charcoal as an odor-absorbing option in its fire-smoke cleanup guidance. These are not established as equivalent or more effective for every ordinary closet smell. Cleaning and ventilation, where appropriate, address a source or trapped smoke more directly than placing an absorber nearby.
