For aluminum, vinyl, and faux-wood horizontal blinds, Springs Window Fashions specifies mild soap and water only; its guidance does not recommend vinegar. For Venetian blinds, a U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development guide describes dusting followed by warm soapy water, slat by slat.
Before cleaning, identify the blind material
“Blinds” can mean different products, and their care instructions are not interchangeable. Check the label or manufacturer’s directions before applying any liquid. The Springs Window Fashions care document, updated in December 2013, gives separate advice by material and does not establish vinegar as appropriate for these coverings.

For wood surfaces generally, University of Georgia Extension advises limiting moisture and drying wood. Its guidance is not a blind-specific endorsement of vinegar. University of Georgia Extension guidance.
How to remove dust without taking blinds down
Start with dry dust removal. The HUD guide recommends closing the blind, lowering it fully, and dusting both sides with a soft cloth or brush. This avoids turning loose dust into damp grime.

- Check the product directions. Identify the material and confirm what cleaner, if any, the manufacturer permits.
- Lower and close the blind. Dust both sides with a soft cloth or brush, working gently across the slats.
- Decide whether damp cleaning is allowed. If the instructions permit it, use the specified cleaner. For its Venetian-blind procedure, HUD describes warm water with soap or detergent; it does not call for vinegar. Place newspaper beneath the blind to catch drips.
- Clean one slat at a time. Open the blind. Starting at the top, fold a cloth or sponge around each slat to clean both sides.
- Rinse and dry each slat. Wipe away the cleaning solution, then dry the slat with a clean cloth.
- Let the blind dry fully. Leave it open and fully lowered until dry.
Should you use vinegar and water?
These sources do not test vinegar on blind finishes or establish a safe dilution or universal recipe. They also do not compare vinegar’s cleaning performance with soap and water. Avoid substituting vinegar for the cleaner named in your blind’s care instructions. If those instructions do not clearly permit a cleaner, stick to dry dusting or contact the manufacturer before damp cleaning.
Use only controlled moisture when damp cleaning is permitted, particularly on wood. The HUD directions call for rinsing and drying slats; the University of Georgia Extension’s general surface guidance also cautions against over-wetting wood and recommends drying it.

What to avoid
- Do not assume vinegar is safe because a blind is labeled “water-resistant” or resembles another material.
- Do not use heat, bleach, abrasives, or solvents on the aluminum, vinyl, and faux-wood horizontal blinds covered by the Springs Window Fashions instructions.
- Do not soak fabric shades or apply liquid to real wood without checking the specific care instructions.
