Set a circular saw’s blade depth with the saw beside the actual workpiece: adjust the shoe so about half a tooth projects below the stock, then lock the depth lever. For a bevel, loosen the bevel lever, align the pointer with the angle mark you need, and retighten it firmly. Turn the saw off and remove its battery or disconnect it from power before making adjustments; your saw’s manual takes precedence because controls and angle ranges vary by model.

Set blade depth to the workpiece

Use the material you are about to cut as your reference rather than relying on a generic ruler measurement. On the cited DEWALT DCS512 and DCS578 saws, the manuals recommend setting the blade so about half a tooth extends below the underside of the stock. DEWALT says this setting reduces blade friction and the chance of kickback; it is not a guarantee that kickback cannot occur.

  1. Isolate power. Switch the saw off and remove its battery, or disconnect it from power, following the instructions for your model. The DCS512 manual specifically instructs users to remove the battery before adjustment.
  2. Position the saw. Rest the shoe beside the workpiece, with the blade aligned as it will be for the cut.
  3. Adjust the depth. Loosen the depth lever and move the shoe until roughly half a blade tooth projects below the stock.
  4. Lock the setting. Retighten the depth lever before using the saw. A loose depth adjustment can shift during a cut.

Check the manual for your saw’s depth adjustment and maximum cutting depth. Blade diameter and saw design affect how deep it can cut; the half-tooth guideline is a setup method, not a substitute for confirming capacity.

Set a bevel angle, including 45 degrees

A bevel tilts the blade relative to the shoe, producing an angled cut through the material. To set one, keep the saw isolated from power, loosen the bevel lever, tilt the shoe until the pointer reaches the desired mark on the scale, and firmly retighten the lever. For a 45-degree cut, align the pointer with the 45-degree mark if your saw has that setting and its manual permits it.

SKIL 15 Amp 7-1/4 Inch Circular Saw with Single Beam Laser Guide - 5280-01
  • Powerful 15-amp motor delivers 5 300-RPM for greater speed and faster cuts
  • 7-1 4-inch carbide-tipped blade included. Spindle lock for easy blade changes.
  • 51° bevel capacity with a positive stop at 45° for a wide variety of cuts
  • Dust blower keeps line-of-cut free of sawdust for improved visibility
  • Safety lock/guarded trigger and power-on indicator minimize accidental starts

Do not assume every circular saw reaches the same maximum angle or uses the same stops and locking mechanism. For example, DEWALT lists a 0–50° bevel capacity for the DCS512, a model-specific specification rather than a universal range. Consult your exact model’s manual for its capacity, detents, and adjustment procedure.

Check whether the angle is accurate

If you need to confirm the saw’s square, 90-degree setting, the DEWALT DCS578 manual describes placing a square against the blade and shoe, then making a test cut in scrap and checking the result. This combines a setup check with a practical check of the cut.

Skil 5080-01 13-Amp 7-1/4" Circular Saw, Red
  • 13 Amp motor for more power and performance than the SKIL 5380
  • 15% weight reduction vs. SKIL 5380, reduces user fatigue
  • 51-Degree bevel with positive stops for great cut capacity
  • Spindle lock for easy blade changes
  • Improved dust blower keeps line of cut free of sawdust

Follow your own saw’s instructions for calibration. The DCS578 procedure is an example, not a universal method: adjustment points and calibration steps can differ by model. For a bevel angle such as 45 degrees, use the manual’s method if it provides one, and verify a test cut on scrap when accuracy matters.

What to check before cutting

  • The blade and saw are appropriate for the workpiece, and the blade is installed as directed by the manufacturer.
  • The depth is set against the actual stock and the depth lever is tight.
  • The bevel pointer is on the intended mark and the bevel lever is firmly tightened.
  • The selected angle is within the saw’s stated range, with any model-specific stops set as directed.
  • Any calibration check follows the exact saw manual; make a test cut on scrap when you need to confirm the result.
